05/04/2004 08:08 AMEvery time Symantec AntiVirus 2003 (XP) encounters an incoming message
with a virus, i.e. 10-20 times each time I download email, it puts up
a dialogue box telling me what it's found. It's not asking me for
advice or requiring me to make a decision. It's just patting itself on
its back. And it interrupts the download until I press the button to
dismiss it, presumably with a muttered "Attaboy, Norton, I mean,
Symantec!" Which means I have to sit and watch my screen while I'm
downloading email. With 1,200 incoming spams a day, this gets to be a
bother....

console to help system managers and network administrators to
centrally administer Mac clients using Norton AntiVirus for Macintosh
9.0. The Web console -- to be made available specifically to corporate
and enterprise licensees of Norton AntiVirus software -- will allow
administrators to distribute virus definitions and product updates on
demand, install the Norton AntiVirus software itself, lock-down
settings, push configuration changes, and maintain client data in a
MySQL database. Symantec plans to release the Web console in November;
customers who have Symantec's Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition 8.x,
Enterprise Edition 8.x and Corporate Edition 9.0 will receive
information on how to get the software.

05/11/2004 06:09 PMWe first mentioned this problem nearly a year ago, though others have
been talking about it for longer. Email viruses these days tend to
spoof the "from" address and make it either something random or
someone else's address from the same addressbook they're spamming.
Since so many network antivirus systems have been setup to alert the
sender if they're sending a virus, this means plenty of innocent
people get
slamm
ed with antivirus spam from antivirus systems telling them they
sent out a virus - when they did no such thing. Symantec seems to
have finally gotten the message and agreed to
make their antivirus systems stop sending back email warnings.
Other antivirus vendors are expected to follow suit.

The SF.NET team has been very busy during the past few months. While
I
don't typically like to pre-announce new features and upgrades to the
site,
I thought this might be a good opportunity to tell you what we are
working on behind the scenes:
- The stats system is back up-to-speed, and the site statistics, with
the exception of CVS statistics, are now up-to-date. In the past,
our stats system has had problems scaling with our exponential growth.
The good news is the stats system is being rewritten from scratch
and will be deployed in the next 6 weeks. This new system will
provide near real-time stats so that you will be able to see how
many downloads, pageviews, and CVS commits are occurring as they
happen.
- Developer CVS check-in/check-out is getting a major speed
increase in the next 5 weeks. Anonymous check-out has been performing
great and soon SSH check-ins/check-outs will have similar speeds.
With
this upgrade are also eliminating the 5 to 8 hour delay that currently
exists between developer check-in and anonymous check-outs.
Everything
will be in real-time. This means as soon as you make a code change,
your users can grab the latest code. This will mark the completion
of our long-term CVS infrastructure improvement project.
We have a lot of additional things improvements in the works, but I
wanted
to give you an update on CVS and stats since I know these services are
extremely important to many of you.

significant effort to redesign and rewrite the mailing list archive
code's database design has recently been completed, tested, and
optimized and is now online.
Archive updates had been suspended during the time period of the
migration. The archive suspension was lifted last week, and all
archives
were brought up to a current state in the following 26-hour period.
This
rapid update of all lists was made possible by the improved
performance
of the archiver code and our extensive efforts to redesign the list
archival system. We have further improved the archival system so that
most future maintenance to the mailing list archive system can be
performed without downtime to the live site.
The SourceForge.net team is continuing to actively review the state of
the SourceForge.net site with an eye for improvements and has a number
