I seem to be on the other end of the phone in conversation with Halley over at IT Conversations Memory Lane. It all seems like an out-of-body experience now. Then it dawned on me how incredibly clueless and lame-brained that would be. Amusingly, I've been down that road too. I'd love to be able to blog the job contacts, interviews, and offers I've had in the last year or two, but it probably is a bad idea even...

Bruce Sterling interviews

Bruce Sterling interviews 01/07/2004 06:12 PM
Two exciting and thought-provoking Bruce Sterling interviews are online today: an hour-long MP3 of an interview with Massi ve Change on the University of Toronto's CIUT radio and a long interview on the future of everything with Mike "Godwin's Law" Godwin in the libertarian mag, "Reason."
reason: Blogging seems to have taken a place in the culture that used to be occupied by fanzines, and maybe by the science fiction magazines.

Sterling: It had its apotheosis in people like Cory Doctorow [author of Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom] and other writers who really aren’t that interested in the old paper world. Cory actually publishes stuff electronically, and blogging is his Weird Tales. He is of a generation sufficiently divorced from the old pulps that he’s the dolphin among mesosaurs here.

You can hear the television on and his kids playing in the background. Very relaxed and chatty. I transfered it to mp3s. Everything you hear is exactly what was on the tape. I don't have a lot of server space, so I'll have to post the mp3s a batch at a time. I wouldn't mind if someone wants to provide greater hosting capabilities." Exit Interviews by Gallup

Exit Interviews by Gallup 03/13/2003 10:14 AM

Marybeth is skeptical about a call she got from Gallup, ostensibly to conduct an exit interview about her leaving MSFT.  It could very well be legitimate.  I blogged about this two years ago, and I still think it's a good idea; especially in cases like Marybeth's, where the employee is otherwise hesitant to be candid.

On the other hand, just because someone has your phone number and claims to be from Gallup doesn't necessarily mean that they are legitimate.  Not everyone who cold calls me at home is a criminal running a scam, but I don't feel like I've missed out on anything special by acting as if they are.

~

Marybeth's story and some of the responses in blogland have spurred me to collect my thoughts on the topic of "difficult work situations".  I've written about the subject here in the past, but would like to post something more comprehensive.  Hopefully soon...

Interviews With Martin Fowler

Interviews With Martin Fowler 12/31/2002 01:58 AM

In this six-part interview, which is being published in weekly installments, Fowler gives his views on many topics, including refactoring, design, testing, and extreme programming.

In Part I, Fowler makes the business case for refactoring and testing, and describes the interplay between refactoring, design, and reliability. In Part II, Fowler discusses design principles of avoiding duplication, separating presentation and domain logic, being explicit, and describes how refactoring depends on code ownership. In Part III, Fowler differentiates between planned and evolutionary design, suggests that focusing on superficial problems can lead to the discovery of substantial problems, and claims that doing a good job won't slow you down.

In Part IV, Fowler discusses design decay, flexibility and reusability versus complexity, four criteria for a simple system, and interface design. In Part V, Fowler describes the unhurried quality of test-first design, defines monological thinking, and distinguishes between unit and functional testing. In this final installment, Fowler describes how to balance maintainability and efficiency and create tunable software, and discusses the role of patterns and the Agile Software Manifesto.

Dawn 2004 is an all-night music/performance event tomorrow (Tuesday) night in San Francisco in celebration of the Jewish holiday of Shavuout. It's $15 for the entire night of eclectic programming: Russel Simins from Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Broun Fellinis, Heather Gold, DJ Polywog, and a host of other artists. At 10pm, I'm conducting a live interview with RU Sirius about his forthcoming book, Coun terculture Through the Ages. Please stop by if you can!
"RU Sirius (aka Ken Goffman) and David Pescovitz take a mind-expanding trip though history to uncover the common threads of counterculture that link biblical Abraham to the Socratics, the revolutionaries of the Enlightenment, the Yippies of the 1960s, and the hacktivists of today. Sirius will reveal how countercultures-- anti-authoritarian, changeable, antic movements that revolutionize mainstream culture--are a powerful and necessary catalyst for the continued evolution of the human species."

David Pescovitz: New Scientist interviews three pioneering inventors of electronic music technology. Bob Moog invented the Moog synthesizer, Dave Smith is the father of MIDI, Peter Vogel co-founded digital sampler trailblazer Fairlight Instruments. From the conversation with Vogel:
Synthe Image Fairlight-Cmi How did you come to work in electronic music?

I was interested in electronics. In a way, being interested in music and not being able to play was a big motivator for me to come up with an instrument that you could make music on without having to do the hard yards at the keyboard. It was sort of advanced laziness. It transpired it would have been a lot easier to learn to play the keyboard, but that's the benefit of hindsight...

What are you working on now?

I'm working on a system for recording TV without the commercials. There will never be any chip you can put in your TV to do this because it's too complicated and expensive. What is required is a signal that is transmitted via a different medium. Our Intelligent Content Engine is now being integrated into recorders and set-top boxes so that when you buy a personal video recorder you can get one that automatically removes the commercials. [The system was launched in Australia in March.]

Outfoxed Torrent (torrentocracy exclusive)

In working with Lawrence Lessig, Robert Greenwald has agreed to release the interviews within Outfoxed: Rupert Murdoch's War on Journalism under a Creative Commons non-commercial license (press release). This means that among the rights now granted, interviews balancing out the fair journalism of Fox News can freely be used as anyone sees fit. To see the full movie, you can purchase the Outfoxed DVD or check it out in theaters.

Torrentocracy (along with archive.org) has exclusive initial access to distribute these interviews in their digital form due to the work undertaken to promote a TV-connected, public domain, internet based media distribution network. The torrent file to start your Outfoxed download can be found at http://www.torrentocracy.com/files/torrents/outfoxed_intervie ws.torrent. For more information on how to use bit torrent peer-to-peer filesharing to download this, go here. If you were a Torrentocracy user, you could already be downloading Outfoxed to your television.

Here's some serious substantial non-infringing use of P2P. I bought the DVD and watched Outfoxed. Definitely worth buying the DVD, but being able to download and use the interviews from the documentary is a great contribution to the commons. It will be interesting to see how people remix this stuff.

Sailing the Martian Sea

Sailing the Martian Sea 03/22/2005 03:36 PM

The Mars Rovers have exceeded all expectations during their time exploring the surface of the red planet. However, there is other Martian exploration and research going on. The European Space Agency probe Mars Express has sent back new data which indicates that there may be a frozen sea under the surface of Mars.

Images taken of the Elysium region near the equator show a region that some believe is a large frozen sea, just below the surface of the planet. The team at the ESA believe that the area, around the size of the UK’s North Sea, contains water that is covered in a layer of volcanic ash that prevents the frozen ice form sublimating in the thin Martian atmosphere.

After reading Kim Stanley Robinson's Mars series, which covered a the colonization and terraforming of the red planet, I find the news that there large amounts of ice on Mars to be fascinating. Maybe some day we'll get there.

Salling Software AB announced on Monday the release of Salling Clicker 2.2, an upgrade to the company's utility that allows you to use your cell phone or PDA as a remote control for your Mac. The new version adds support for Sendo X, Motorola A925, Nokia 7610, palmOne Zire 72, TapWave Zodiac and Sony Ericsson T637, as well as limited support for Sony Ericsson's K700 and Z1010 phones until the company provides firmware upgrades. In addition, Salling Clicker 2.2 offers integration with Elgato's EyeTV, Slim Devices' Squeezebox audio player and other audio/video players; the ability to use Symbian OS smartphones to initiate connections; slide title previews for PowerPoint 2004; and more. This is a free upgrade for existing users, while new ones can download the application and use it for 30 clicks of the remote control device before paying the US$19.95 license fee. Salling Clicker 2.2 requires Mac OS X v10.2.8 or higher.
