Diller To Show IAC Is No Travel Company

Diller To Show IAC Is No Travel Company
By Creating IAC's Travel Company
12/22/2004 01:16 AMBarry Diller has done a good job buying up various online "middleman"
companies in a variety of spaces from travel to social networking to
dating. However, he says too many people view InterActiveCorp as a
travel company and that's making it more difficult to acquire
non-travel companies. So, in order to
prove that he's not
running a travel company...
he's
going to show them what it means to really run a travel
company. That is, he's going to spin off all of IAC's travel
properties, including Expedia, Hotwire, TravelNow and Hotels.com, into
one company (which he'll still run), and keep all the other properties
as IAC. While it may be a good idea to realize the value of those
other properties, from the beginning Diller kept talking about the
synergies of having all of these properties under the same umbrella.
Apparently, those synergies only go so far when the stock price isn't
as high as he had hoped.

There have been some sever
e allegations about foul play inside of ICANN with regards to the
.travel sTLD allocation. Staff, counsel and the board have reviewed
these allegations and I am convinced that these allegations are
unfounded and have just voted in favor of .travel.
I have talked to several independent participants who are also
puzzled by these allegations but I have asked them to dig around for
more facts. I will report back if I find anything, but until there is
some third party corroboration of these allegation, I would hope
people would stop spreading this rumor as if it were fact. I
understand that people don't like to give ICANN the benefit of the
doubt, but these are quite severe allegations from a single source. Please be responsible.

Is Time Travel Is Possible?
Is Time Travel Is Possible?
03/15/2003 04:00 PMThere was that
guy who
was supposedly going to have 3rd August 2002 tatooed on his forearm
instructing him to come back in time to the Empire State Building on
that date should he ever gain access to time travel in his lifetime.
Whatever.
What about putting a line in your will and
testament to the effect that you will legally force your children to
pledge that they will come back in time to meet you should they gain
access to time travel in their lifetimes, and they in turn must too
must force their children to make the same pledge and so on all the
way down your entire line of descendants. Surely by making that pledge
today you
should be able to make time travel happen. If it is
at all possible.
Wow, wait a minute......someone who looks
a little like me dressed in an outfit made out of what looks like
silver foil type fabric just appeared in my room. Wait...what?....you
mean you're my
great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-grea
t grandson and you've come back to show me all about time travel? Wow!
I just had a quick trip forwards in time to August this year and I
blogged it!
Cool.

Travel update from UK
Travel update from UK
06/08/2004 04:24 AMSorry about the light blogging. Have been a bit distracted with my
travels.
British Midland lost my bag on a direct flight from Naples to
Heathrow. Unsure who's fault it was, but no apology (not that I
expected one) from anyone. Luckily, it arrived that night.
Staying at the Park Lane Hotel on Piccadilly. Looked like a nice room
at first glance, but the fax machine was broken, room safe broken
(they've tried to fix it 3 times, still broken), drippy faucet, door
lock broken (took 24 hours to fix), wifi in room, but a credit card
based T-Mobile network with spotty coverage in my room.
The room is much better than many places I've stayed, but it would
be SO MUCH better if they just had their shit together a bit more.
(Maybe it's because I'm using mileage to pay for the room...)
Anyway, I expected much better from a "five star" London hotel. What a
pity. I'm never going to stay at this hotel again.
On the bright side, I've gotten to meet a bunch of the UK bloggers
and so far the food is MUCH BETTER than I remember it from visiting
years ago.

Air travel and global warming
01/22/2004 03:01 AMScott
Mackinney criticizes me in a comment on my blog about the damage I
am causing to the environment with all of my air travel. I actually
have been feeling a bit guilty about that and has been wondering where
aviation is going to go from here.
On the one hand, in some areas, air travel is becoming cheaper and
there are even people talking about small, low-cost private
planes becoming more common.
A Feb 2000 GAO
report warns that the damage to the environment from the emissions
from aviation is particularly high because it is emitted into the
upper atmosphere and that increased damage due to increases in travel
can not be offset by technological advances. A report by the
Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), a group of experts
affiliated with the UN warned that the share of global warming caused
by air traffic could increase from 3.5% in 1992 to 17% in 2050.
We clearly have a problem here. In an IHT article that I can not
seem to find a link to, I read that one of the possibilities was to
fly lower where there would be more turbulence, but less damage. I've
also heard about the idea of levying high taxes for air travel. In any
event, the air travel utopia story seems a bit flawed and if we would
get up off our asses and really do something about global warming
(which we must) one of the first hit probably should be our global
aviation habits.
I WAS going to write about this before, but hadn't been able to
gather enough sources. (Honest! ;-) ) I still don't think I have
enough information to have an educated opinion. Any pointers to more
resources would be greatly appreciated.
The Good Old Days of Travel
The Good Old Days of Travel
01/07/2004 03:39 PMJust finished a Dover Press book entitled Je
wish Travellers in the Middle Ages, 19 Firsthand
Accounts. Good for putting the discomforts of
present-day travel into perspective...
Mushullam Ben R. Menahem in 1481:
"And even if you escape all these dangers [bandits on the
road, Muslims who like to kill Jews, etc.] yourself it often happens
to people that the horses on which they ride die, or they are nearly
dead when they reach Jerusalem, because of the brackish water they
drink, and the great heat and the dust which comes into their mouths,
and the sand in which they go up to the knees in great pain and also
because of the want of food and the long journey..."
Once you got to Jerusalem there wasn't all that much to see
compared to what greets modern-day travelers. Obadiah Da
Bertinoro 1487:
"Jerusalem is for the most part desolate and in ruins. I need
not repeat that it is not surrounded by walls. Its inhabitants,
I am told, number about 4,000 families. As for Jews, about
seventy families of the poorest class have remained; there is scarcely
a family that is not in want of the commonest necessaries; one who has
bread for a year is called rich."
Just getting to the vicinity of present-day Israel was a
long process. Obadiah continues...
"... every year Jews come in the Venetian galleys and even
in the pilgrim ships, for there is really no safer and shorter way
than by these ships. ... The Galleys perform the journey from
Venice here in forty days at the most."
Worth a trip to the library but not a book with which you'd
want to clutter your house in the long run.
