.NET reality check

.NET reality check 01/27/2004 02:51 PM
There's been some pushback recently, in the .NET blogging community, about Microsoft's habit of living in the future. For example:
It is abundantly frustrating to be keeping up with you guys right now. We out here in the real world do not use Longhorn, do not have access to Longhorn (not in a way we can trust for production), and we cannot even begin to test out these great new technologies until version 1.0 (or 2.0 for those that wish to stay sane). I know there's probably not a whole lot you can do, but this is a plea to you from someone "in the field". My job is to work on the architecture team as well as implement solutions for a large-scale commercial website using .NET. I use this stuff all day every day, but I use the 1.1 release bits.

Here's my point, enough with the "this Whidbey, Longhorn, XAML is so cool you should stop whatever it is you are doing and use it". Small problem, we can't. Please help us by remembering that we're still using the release bits, not the latest technology. [Michael Earls]
In the spirit of Michael's plea, I'm working on an upcoming article in which I'll compare what was promised for the .NET platform (er, framework), two and three years ago, with the current reality as it exists today. Examples of the kinds of issues I want to consider: ...

Adesso's Cameras: Mini? Check. Assy?

adesso_minis.jpg image

Kyocera isn't the only camera company taking hot fashion tips from Apple's iPod mini. Adesso has a new line of new cameras that seem to match, at least superficially, the green, pink, and blue colors of the mini. However, in an interesting break from Kyocera's form, the Adesso cameras seem to be exceptionally, well, crappy, with the high end model rolling in with a 1.3-megapixel sensor. I guess hoping for an LCD on the back of these is asking too much, huh? I think this is one time when following the 'smaller is better' ethic is probably a misstep.

Even worse? They're not even out. (Thanks, Justin!)

U.S. Techies Working At Overseas
Salaries?

U.S. Techies Working At Overseas
Salaries?
12/03/2003 02:39 PM
The issue of tech companies offshoring programming work is certainly a contentious one, and Business Week has an article talking about how one company dealt with the dilemma of saving 50% on salaries (vs. the standard asking price) by outsourcing to India or, instead, offering much lower salaries to American workers. The company found that they were flooded with resumes for the low paying job - many of which turned out to be high quality programmers. The company hired four programmers at the lower wages, and used them for the one project. Two of the programmers were eventually hired on as full-time employees at regular salaries. Of course, this sort of thing only works while the job market is weak, but does suggest that the market is correcting somewhat for boom-time salaries that were out of proportion with reality. Still, I take issue with the "obvious" choice, as described in the article, of going with cheaper overseas workers. I think that the benefits of having local, on-site staff who you can communicate with directly is quite valuable - often in excess of the amount of money "saved" in offshore salaries. In this case, the employer only valued the location at $5,000/year - which is much less than it's probably worth. The risk in offering salaries that are so low is that you may get lower quality workers who are much more likely to jump ship. However, in this case, it's clear that the employer realized this, and appears to have made his reasons clear to the employees - and, in fact, adjusted the salaries well upwards for the employees he wanted to keep. This all brings to mind the whole concept of "professional internships" that seem to become popular when the economy is down. People who want to convince a potential employer of their worth sometimes agree to unpaid (or barely paid) "internships" to convince the company that they're worth hiring.

Benchmarks? We don't need no stinking
benchmarks...
04/01/2005 09:09 AM
Insi de the Pentagon.  Hilarious. News is finally leaking out how the US warplan for Iraq lacked (until recently) specific benchmarks.  Rapid changes in course can be characterized as flexibility if those changes are slaved to defined objectives.  If those objectives don't exist, it's chaos.

Of course, these new benchmarks are classified.  This means that they are effectively useless in this conflict.  In order to fight a decentralized insurgency, decision making must be pushed down to the lowest levels.  Every soldier in Iraq should know what these objectives are so they can adapt their effort to accomplish them.

The top U.S. officer in Iraq, Army Gen. George Casey, lately has been garnering plaudits behind the scenes from his military and civilian colleagues for adding measurable benchmarks to his campaign plan, a classified document in which a commander typically delineates security objectives and how subordinate units will attain them. But some officials say the nearly two-year delay in laying out clear and realistic security goals in a single military plan has taken a toll on the Iraqi stability and reconstruction effort.
