The First Rule Of The Olympics: You
Can't Talk About The Olympics
The First Rule Of The Olympics: You
Can't Talk About The Olympics
08/20/2004 02:25 AMWe've already talked about how the Olympics forced certain radio
stations to
pull
their internet streams because they weren't approved for internet
broadcasts of the Olympics, and now comes the news that
no athletes participating in the games are allowed to talk
about their experiences on websites. Considering the number of
empty seats (and the weak television coverage), giving the games a
more personal feel, letting the athletes talk for themselves (rather
than those sappy profiles on TV) would help people to connect more
with the games. That, though, would involve remembering that the
games are actually about what happens in the events, and not how much
the Olympics can squeeze out of sponsors. Haven't they figured out
yet, that if no one cares about the games, no one will want to sponsor
the Olympics any more? As for those who dare to disobey and actually
talk about their experiences online? The Olympics are threatening to
remove their credentials or possibly "take legal action for any
monetary damages." Monetary
damages? From posting your
thoughts on the games? Seems pretty clear just how focused the
Olympic organizers are on money instead of the athletes and the
contests.

Olympics Say No to Wi-Fi
Olympics Say No to Wi-Fi
05/20/2004 09:53 AMAthens IT contractor finds Wi-Fi too prone to denial of service at
present: The Atos Origin manager for the games didn't stress security
issues like actual break-ins. Rather, he was concerned about the
likelihood of attempted attacks that they would have to analyze, and
the potential of a single idiot to jam signals. These are
unfortunately reasonable concerns at present--it's all too easy to
produce junk 2.4 GHz signals or to automate denial of service attacks
that deassociate other clients....

many of the designs
seem to be pushing complexity over useability? wouldn't a better use
of a GUI design prize be to encourage people to improve on a design

Olympics underway
Olympics underway
08/11/2004 01:25 PMJust watched the US Women's team defeat
Greece 3-0. Five members of the 1991 world cup team are still
playing for the US which is pretty impressive -- there aren't a lot of
examples in international sports of people remaining competitive for
over 13 years.
Tomorrow, Iraq rejoins the Olympics for the first time since 1988
to play soccer against Portugal, which is great to see. On the
downside, I'm hearing about a lot of top American athletes ducking out
of this year's games (in tennis, basketball, and cycling especially)
citing injuries and personal reasons. It's a shame we won't seem them
but I'm wondering if part of it is due to concerns about attacks or
violence. I certainly hope the games go smoothly, it seemed a few
months ago the only news coming out of Athens was bad news, but
today's soccer match seemed to go just fine.

Big Brother goes to the Olympics
Big Brother goes to the Olympics
08/13/2004 10:37 AMNew Scientist has an article looking at the US$312 million
surveillance system installed for the 2004 Olympics in Athens. The
eyes and ears consist of 1,000 high-res and infrared videocameras
peppering the city. Cell and landline telephone calls are being
recorded, converted into text, and "scanned for phrases that could be
linked to terrorist activity." The software's developers say it speaks
Greek, English, Arabic, Farsi, and other major languages.
(John Pike, an analyst with the defence think-tank Global
Security) believes other undisclosed measures are undoubtedly in
place, such as face recognition from video footage. He says such
surveillance technology has already proven its worth in intelligence
gathering. "They're basically the sort of stuff the National Security
Agency has been using for some time," he told New Scientist. "And they
seem to place great faith in it."
The human security is massive as well--there are seven security people
for every athlete.

The TiVo Olympics
09/06/2004 11:54 PM
Every fourth summer, IT trade pubs write about the technology that
powers the Olympic Games. It's always an interesting topic, but apart
from an enhanced focus on security, the Athens 2004 stories were
little changed from their Sydney 2000 counterparts. And yet, this
Olympics was utterly transformed, for me and for a few million other
viewers, by TiVo.
Thanks to this cheap, Linux-based appliance, I was able to compress
all of the events that interested me into a fraction of the time it
would otherwise have taken to watch them. I'll always remember the
Athens games as the first TiVo Olympics. Now I'm thinking about ways
to make the next one even better.
...
In our world -- where blogs, Wi-Fi, and computer-attached video
cameras are the norm -- we've begun to redefine the art of event
coverage. If you want to see how the Beijing Olympics should be
covered in 2008, visit a tech conference next year. [Full story at
