01/08/2004 08:20 PMApple has announced a partnership with HP where HP will create an
HP-branded digital music device based on the iPod. As part of the
agreement, HP consumer model desktops and notebooks will come with
iTunes pre-installed and a handy iTunes icon placed on the desktop.
"HP’s goal is to bring the most compelling entertainment
content and experiences to our customers," said Carly Fiorina,
chairman and chief executive officer at HP. "We explored a range
of alternatives to deliver a great digital music experience and
concluded Apple’s iPod music player and iTunes music service were
the best by far. By partnering with Apple, we have the opportunity to
add value by integrating the world’s best digital music offering
into HP’s larger digital entertainment system strategy."
The HP digital music player is expected to be available by summer and
be competitively priced with other similar devices.

iTunes User Sues Apple For Only Letting
Music Play On The iPod
iTunes User Sues Apple For Only Letting
Music Play On The iPod
01/05/2005 10:30 PMWell, this should be interesting. An "unhappy" iTunes user is now
suing Apple for antitrust
violations, claiming that they broke antitrust laws by only
allowing their music to play on iPods -- blocking out other music
players from the market. It's unlikely that he'll win the lawsuit,
and honestly, it sounds more like a setup by an Apple competitor than
just some individual who feels wronged. The guy in question says he
was "forced" to buy an iPod in order to make use of the music he
bought on iTunes, but the courts will likely point out that he could
have gone to a competing online music store. Of course, what this
really highlights is how some of these copy protection issues are
building fragmented worlds. How would people react if the CDs they
bought at Tower Records could only play on Tower-branded radios?
Thanks to the way the industry views intellectual property online, the
end result is a lot of competing separate worlds, which actively
discourages use.

Microsoft asks nicely, “Apple, will

08/27/2004 02:05 PMMicrosoft, about to release their online digital music store (in
typical late-to-the-game form), has apparently asked Apple to open up
the iPod to songs purchased from their store. Yeah, they were
rejected, just like a certain other company in Washington State was;
looks like not even all their stock in Apple could get them to loosen
their stranglehold on the iPod. Not that they really have to or
anything, so are you really surprised? Could this mean that Microsoft
is going to ask that certain someone for advice on how to manage
proper iPod support?

Switched to iTunes + iPod
Switched to iTunes + iPod
12/22/2004 01:35 AMI've been playing around with my new iPod lately trying to figure
out what all the fuss is about, and I have to admit that the hype is
justified. I've been attached to Windows Media Player for quite a
while and it wasn't easy to give it up, but the combination of iTunes
+ iPod is very slick and the user interface is extremely simple (note
to self: you could learn a lot from Apple's UI work).
What's interesting is how using iTunes has changed my music buying
habits. In the past I've always bought complete CDs, but now I'm
purchasing individual songs via iTunes instead. In the last few
weeks I've bought a ton of songs - but no albums. I now have an
eclectic assortment of songs that I'm trying to figure out how to best
arrange into playlists.
For example, here's my first try at an iMix playlist. Yes,
I know - it's a weird set of songs (Danzig and Johnny Cash don't
usually go well together), but I actually enjoy the mix. Oh, and I
originally had Frank Zappa's "Echidna's Arf (Of You)" as the last track, but as far
as iTunes is concerned, Zappa doesn't exist (anyone from Zappa.com listening?).
