Congrats to Roland and Boris and.....

They've just launched Bryght - a Drupal hosting service. I hung out with these guys a bit when I was in Vancouver and they're certainly a compelling reason for moving there.

Vancouver is hot.

Here's Roland's post....

Our latest venture is Bryght, a hosted Drupal service, "the Salesforce.com of community content". I am working with Boris, Richard, Adrian and James on this one. Yes, we are all Bryght guys :-) !

We have taken Drupal and combined it with web hosting and email to give you a one stop shop for your community content. No IT required, no muss, no fuss! Check out The lights are on at Bryght for more background on how this started. And if you know of an individual, organization or company that could use a Bryght site, please contact us.

Whither StreamLine you might ask? StreamLine continues and it will continue to resell Blogware blogs because we still believe that Blogware is the best individual blogging platform.

Lily Cheng from Microsoft Research is talking about how people represent themselves on line. The closer the friends, the fuzzier they want the representations. We need to make social tools fluid enough to account for the way people's lives change. We need easy access to friends and people important to us. We want sponatenous interactions. Lily's group went to a mall and asked people to draw their social interactions, and gots lots of circles and lines. Microsoft studied this and built a "personal map" that clusters people based on who they send email to (TO and CC) and how...

People Still Like CDs

People Still Like CDs 09/17/2004 04:12 AM
While the recording industry continues to insist that music downloading is destroying their business, there's even more evidence that this simply isn't true. From ITFacts.biz, we learn that 92% of people surveyed still prefer their music on a CD. In fact, most say that when they download it's usually to get songs they can't get on CD or to sample music before buying the CD. Other reasons given are if they want a song immediately or if they really only want one or two songs from an album and don't want to shell out for the entire album. Notice that all four of these reasons show that music downloading is not a substitute for CDs. Now, obviously, not everyone here may be telling the truth. Also, the percentage of people who are just fine with downloads is likely to grow over time. However, if the recording industry were smart about this they'd realize that they should be focusing on ways to use downloads to promote more CD sales -- and perhaps adding more value to the CDs itself (off the top of my head, this could include: DVD content, better liner notes, access to the band's fan club, free tickets to a show, etc.).

Where 's Thursday, May 6 ? - Nightline "disappears" show segment - OK, I've waited almost 2 weeks. Now, it's official - Nightline "disappeared" it's own show. On Thursday May 6, 2004, Nightline featured, prominently, a call for a phased US pullout from Iraq by Retired Lieutenant General, Wi lliam Odom - Ronald Reagan's head of the National Security Agency. Odom recommended turning the whole mess over to the UN. Mention of Odom or the segment is kind of hard to pry out of ABC . You can buy a transcript though, so this isn't really censorship, right?...........

People Want To Yak In The Sky

People Want To Yak In The Sky 09/14/2004 02:55 PM
There have been plenty of stories in the last few months about various tests and plans to let passengers on airplanes start using mobile phones while flying. The basic solution involves a modified cell tower attached to the plane itself, to route all the calls through that tower, rather than deal with the problem of having phones hit many, many towers within range on the ground beneath them. However, many people seem to react with horror to the idea that the person sitting next to them could be talking away on their phone the whole flight, ignoring, of course, that plenty of people talk to their neighbors on flights already. Of course, with mobile phones there are additional problems such as the "yelling" that comes with mobile phone conversations (especially in a noisy environment) and the "annoyance" of only hearing one side of the conversation (which studies have shown is more annoying, probably because the side you hear is either on or off, unlike a standard conversation which may be continuous). However, it's still likely to move forward, as a new study shows that many business travelers would make airline decisions based on whether or not they could use their mobile phones on board. To make the study more useful, though, they should ask people if they would choose to fly on certain airlines if they included a "no mobile phone yakking" section as well.

Where Did All The People Go?

Where Did All The People Go? 08/31/2004 04:28 AM
There's nothing wrong with automation. It often does help improve tedious tasks while opening up new more interesting jobs. However, what keeps getting passed off as automation, isn't automation at all, but shifting labor to customers. You'll notice the people have been disappearing. It's happening at grocer y store checkout counters, movie theater ticket purchases and airline check-ins. Now, you can add hote l check-ins to the list. The hotels implementing this say it's to give guests better service -- but I'm not sure that's true. Maybe I've just been lucky (or I have the good fortune to always arrive at odd hours), but I've never had much of a problem checking in to hotels. I honestly can't remember ever having to wait in line at a hotel to check in, but to read this article, you'd think it was a big problem -- that's now solved by the fact that you can "check in" via the web, up to a week before. You get a page to print out and when you get to the hotel you hand over the paper, and they hand you an envelope. It seems like this must save all of about a minute. It must be all those impatient broadband users (note how the check in occurs over the web?). Honestly, I wouldn't have any problem with this, if they simply said outright that this is a way that they can save some money or get rid of tedious/repetitive jobs by making the customer do the work instead. Hell, if we got a discount for doing some work the hotel staff used to have to do themselves, even better. However, this isn't automation, and it's really not designed to make the customer experience better. It's just shifting the labor to the customer.

People of Helsinki

Sydänstadin kuvia [Photos of downtown] is a nice, small photo exhibit in the Pannuhuone kahvila on Uudenmaankatu [the mincemeat crepes are very good, too]. If you're in the neighbourhood, go have a coffee and a look at the photos. In spite of the photos being digital and showing it in the enlargements, the subjects are people around downtown Helsinki which I found very interesting. The pair of couples in the photo above are especially well done and I think the artist should get photo quality glossy prints and sell these two as a set. If you can't get there, the photographer, Ukko Heikkinen, has a gallerly online of the people of Uudenmankatu which, even with some of the stiffness/awkwardness in a few them, is a terrific collection of the people who live and work here in Helsinki. M-F 9-15 until Friday at Pannuhuone, Uudenmaankatu 19.

While for many of us, the internet has become a central part of our lives, there are still many Americans who haven't bothered with the internet. In many cases, it is still a money issue. While it's getting cheaper all the time, for some it's still difficult to justify a computer purchase and a monthly ISP. For others, it's a fear issue. There are so many stories about all the bad stuff online that many are afraid to even try it out.

Are there gay people at ETCON?

Are there gay people at ETCON? 01/16/2004 11:30 AM

So first things first, after considerable soul-searching and fiddling around with finances I've found a way to go to Emerging Tech this year to cheer on my BBC other half's paper: Gl ancing: I'm OK, You're OK. Last year the conference completely blew me away and acted as fuel for one of the most creative periods in my working life to date (although unfortunately not all of that creativity ended up being expressed coherently or in the public domain). Hopefully this year's conference will be just as good...

One thing that I found last year that I wasn't expecting was how many like-minded people I met - or if not like-minded, how many people there I felt comfortable around. I felt that I understood their world-view even if I didn't understand anything else that came out of their mouths. That got me thinking about what particular elements or lifestyle attributes we had in common - and that in turn made me thing about all the things things that we might not have in common - and that in turn led me to think about whether or not these events are bastions of heterosexual maleness and whether many of the people present might be gay. So as a result of that, I'm putting a kind-of poll into the field to see if there are going to be any gay people at ETCon this year that would like to get together at some point for a drink and a chat.

The BBC is best when it's at its least domestic and condescending: its radio and web output is better than its TV news (BBC World excepted) and the World Service is best of all. There's a reason why people who work at Bush House feel superior: they are superior.

For the record, I work at Broadcasting House, which is kind of like the BBC's version of the Lost City of Atlantis.

Record Industry Faces Duel Over New
'DualDiscs'
08/06/2004 06:24 PM
Plans to sell new hybrid CD/DVDs have hit legal and licensing snags that threaten to scuttle a mass rollout that the hard-hit music industry had been counting on to aid its recovery, people familiar with the matter said this week Record makers are enjoying a rebound after a three-year sales slump blamed largely on online piracy. Efforts to control piracy and the growth of legal Web music services like Apple Computer Inc.'s (AAPL.O: Quote, Profile, Research) iTunes have helped.

The labels also have spurred sales by packaging "bonus" DVDs with CDs. In February, several began test marketing the new hybrid discs -- CD on one side and DVD on the other. They see these "DualDiscs" as a next generation product that marries the booming market for DVDs with declining CDs. "It's not like the coming of the CD, but we did really well with them," said Greg Harrington, manager of Tower Records in Cambridge, Massachusetts, which took part in the test.
