China and the limits of nation-state
power

China and the limits of nation-state
power
03/14/2005 05:54 PM
CNN.  The vestiges of the nation-state system in China have led it to blunder into passing a law to limit Taiwan's choices.  Of course, given the prevailing logic of conventional military power, China could invade and secure Taiwan easily.  There might be complications in the international system (sanctions and tensions, etc.), but those are likely to pass.

However, given the new leverage now available to small groups of guerrillas, China could find itself in hot water.  It would be extremely easy for guerrillas to completely shut down the Chinese economy and turn its 9% annual growth into a fond memory.  Would it be worth it to China to give up two to three years of economic advancement in exchange for Taiwan?  Could the current state survive the social dislocation caused by this?

China Gets Wired... But Digital Divide
Exists

China Gets Wired... But Digital Divide
Exists
07/21/2004 02:54 AM
The internet is growing in China, as they now have 87 million people online, though they are apparently connecting through just 36.3 million internet connected computers. The number of Chinese netizens puts them firmly in second place, though just about everyone expects them to take first place before long. That 87 million represents just 6.6% of the population, which may point to a bigger issue. While the US worries about the "digital divide," it looks like a much bigger issue in China. Internet usage is much more common in more developed areas, and many seem worried that less developed areas will get left even further behind. While the Chinese government has tried to go online, the study found that most such sites are unused, and many government officials prefer not to use their own websites. None of this is particularly surprising, but it's still interesting to see the data.

Apex Digital Chairman Arrested In China
For Fraud
12/30/2004 04:39 PM
Earlier this year, we had a story noting that Apex Digital, known mainly as a distributor of insanely cheap Chinese-made consumer electronics, was doing amazingly well, and planning to move into the computer business as well. It appears, however, that the "amazingly well" part of the equation was helped along by, you know, not actually paying their vendors. Apex's chairman has now been arrested in China on fraud charges, following the news that many companies believe Apex owes them millions of dollars. And you wondered why those DVD players were so cheap?
