Smiling makes you happy

Smiling makes you happy 01/08/2004 08:09 PM

An interesting theory that facial expressions affect blood-flow to the brain and are not just results of emotions. The assertion is that these blood-flows affect our emotions. So SMILE! :-)

Zajonc, R. B., Emotion and Facial Efference: A Theory Reclaimed, Scince, 1985, 288, 15-2

He also asserted that elation follows the smile, not the opposite. The blood flow changes caused by contracting the facial muscles in the smile alter cerebral blood flow and cause an emotional change. He extends this reasoning to account for all kinds of other bizarre facial habits associated with emotions -- wrinkled forheads, rubbing one's eyes, hand on forehead, pulling earlobes, licking lips, etc.

Putting A Smiling Face On The Database
That Knows Everything About You

Putting A Smiling Face On The Database
That Knows Everything About You

There are ways to argue that better management of information about someone can lead to better privacy protection. However, I've read and reread this article about how the CEO of ChoicePoint, a massive database company best known for providing background checks on anyone, is trying to openly discuss privacy concerns with people, and about the only thing I can get out of it is that he wants to convince us all that we should just trust him. He wants a debate, but doesn't do much to explain how a service like his actually protects our privacy. His only point is that the data should remain in separate databases - until someone does a search. Of course, this seems like semantics. If the search goes across multiple databases, then it's effectively a single database. He's also working to provide the backend of Stephen Brill's "No, I'm Not A Terrorist Card" that we discussed last year. The idea is that non-terrorists (who, as the saying goes, "have nothing to hide") reveal all sorts of info about themselves in exchange for a card that says, basically, "the person holding this card isn't a terrorist, don't bother making them stand in long security lines." As we pointed out, as voluntary as this sounds, it certainly seems like there would be an awful lot of guilt-by-no-association. "What, you mean, you didn't pass the 'I'm not a terrorist' test? What did you do?" But, thankfully, if we just trust this CEO (without understanding why we should trust him - and even though the article names some screwups the company has made in the past concerning privacy) we should have nothing to worry about.

[Thank G*d it's Friday!] UK Home Office
bans smiling
08/06/2004 07:56 AM
Heres a nice filler for a friday, made me chuckle anyway. Our fine friends over at The Inquirer have spotted an interesting piece of news that could threaten the reputation of Brits abroad everywhere (myself included).

THE HOME OFFICE has ordered British people to stop smiling on their passport photograph in a bid to save the country from a terror attack.
It seems that the British stiff upper-lip is required so that photos can be scanned by digital readers. The reader will compare the photo with the person standing in front of it.

According to guidelines issued for all those who want a passport their photos must be "looking straight at the camera, with a neutral expression, with their mouth closed".

Apparently a cheesy grin will chuck the scanner, which has an allergy to teeth, completely out of wack. Photo booth companies have been forced to update all their machines to ensure that the pictures are acceptable under the new rules. The Home Office said its requirements were in line with new international standards for biometric face-recognition schemes.

Wi-Fi a Business Traveler Service

Wi-Fi a Business Traveler Service 09/20/2004 04:43 PM
A new study from TeleAnalytics concludes that business travelers are increasingly using Wi-Fi while the consumer market is growing much slower: The study tallies the number of hotels around the world that offer Wi-Fi and also looks at airport, hotel, and consumer hotspot usage. The study found that Wi-Fi use in airports has grown more than 350 percent in a six-month period. While that growth isn't expected to be sustainable, it only represents a fraction of the people who pass through airports so additional growth is likely. The study also found plenty of consumer hotspots with less than seven sessions per week and overall usage growth in the consumer segment doesn't surpass a 50 percent year-to-year increase. The findings make sense. Currently, many of the for-pay hotspots cost more than most consumers would be willing to pay. Also, such hotspots offer more for the business user who can use the access to get their jobs done. Consumers have a less critical need for the service and may need more of an incentive, especially if they're asked to pay for it. As the market matures, I expect operators that try to target the consumer market will begin making special content offerings or loyalty programs that will encourage more use....
