iPod Connection Kit II

iPod Connection Kit II 04/13/2005 11:03 AM
Dr. Bott, German manufacturer and distributor of Macintosh peripherals, began shipping its iPod Connection Kit II in 2002. The company's original iPod Connection Kit came with an FM transmitter that couldn't be sold everywhere in the world, and with an increasing global demand for the original kit, the company decided to release a worldwide version. "This kit is a great addition to the iPod and provides everything an iPod owner is going to want sooner or later to get the most out of their iPod," Dr. Bott CEO Eric Prentice said. The connection kit works with all iPods and includes a FireWire PocketDock, auto cassette adapter, auto charger, mini stereo extension cable (male/female), mini stereo to RCA cable, mini stereo connection cable (male/male), and an iPod carry pouch. Every product in this ensemble works as expected, from the charger to the great carry pouch, and the only complaint Spymac has with the kit is the change from the FM tuner to the cassette adapter, as not all cars have cassette players, though most have radios. The carry pouch is handy and keeps the iPod protected while on the road, and just as the product promises, the kit let's you take "1,000 songs, anywhere you want." The iPod Connection Kit II can be purchased from Dr. Bott for $47.95. Pros: Contains everything needed for iPod travel Products match iPod Works well Cons: Not everyone has a cassette player www.drbott.com If your company has a product you would like Spymac to review, please send an email to news@spymac.com.

connection back up

connection back up 01/07/2004 04:30 PM

This morning the DSL was still acting up (ie., not working, with traceroute dying at random points on different routes) on many websites worldwide, including Eircom's own DSL support page (dsl-support.eircom.net) which is hosted here in Ireland. So I called up technical support and immediately they told me that the problem was that I had an "invalid IP" assigned. Apparently they have a number of these invalid IPs in the pool (for the PPPoE connections) which they are "trying to remove" and if you get one of those assigned for your dynamic IP a number of sites on the Internet will not be reachable. The solution is to turn off the modem and wait for a while... and if that doesn't work (as in my case, since I did that in the morning) call up tech support and they will release the IP and make sure that the new IP assigned will not be one of the invalid ones. Sounds weird that an IP in the pool might work for some sites and not others. I wonder what kind of routing boxes they are using.

Now, if you ask me, it shouldn't be so hard to write a little program that would check each IP in turn and remove those that don't work no? Why wait until customers complain?

Anyway, if you're in Ireland, use Eircom DSL and you have problems reaching some websites, this might be the reason.

07/14/2004 09:59 AM

olevia_lcd_tv_20.jpg imageSyntax Groups has announced a new 20-inch version of its Olevia LCD TV, which while not the most attractive piece of hardware, does continue the Olevias' tradition of including a VGA connection for use with PCs -- something that should be, but often isn't, standard on an LCD television. Sure, a 20-inch monitor with a resolution of only 800 by 600 isn't going to blow anyone's socks off, but if you're going to drop $700 on what is essentially a monitor, it's nice to have the option to use it as you please.

Olevia has also announced an upcoming 32-inch television with a low-response time to help alleviate image blurring (16ms) and a more reasonable 1366 by 768 resolution.

Full press release after the jump.

Should The Connection Be Separate From
The Device

Should The Connection Be Separate From
The Device
04/16/2004 05:01 AM
For years, we've been talking about the idea of the persona l wireless hub, where you would have a single (small) device that would connect you with a wireless network - and in turn, that device would have a personal area wireless connection to connect whatever other devices to that wireless connection. This way, you could have the appropriate device for the appropriate situation. Of course, it would also mean carrying around more gadgets. Still, while this idea was originally suggested by a company named IXI, since then it's picked up fans like Samsung and Motorola. Well, in something of an update to that idea, Charlie Demerjian at the Inquirer is pointing out that the carriers are screwed up in their thinking by pushing increasingly complex mobile phones that bolt on various additional functions that don't necessarily make sense. He suggests this is completely backwards from what consumers want: smaller phones with longer battery life - while these "smarter" phones are generally larger with shorter battery life (and a lot more expensive - often requiring a larger subsidy from the carrier). Of course, from the perspective of carriers, they want to encourage more network usage to up their revenue from each user. Unlike so many complaining article, he also comes up with a perfectly good suggestion, playing off the personal wireless hub idea. Instead of focusing on selling a fancier and fancier phone, he suggests the carriers just give out a cheap little wireless device that can easily connect to just about any device and automatically gives it wireless capabilities (on their network, of course). This lets users still get the cheap, small, long life battery they want, while also encourage people to use even more data by connecting up more appropriate data devices. Of course, he suggests all this as if no one else has thought of it - and (as mentioned) Samsung and Motorola are moving forward with the idea - and are even trying to merge the idea of this separate device directly into an inexpensive phone (which makes more sense) which can then connect locally (using Bluetooth, I imagine) to the appropriate device. I don't think the carriers are really against such an idea, it's just that the technology is not yet ready for prime time.

The New Jersey Porn Connection

The New Jersey Porn Connection 06/23/2004 04:04 PM

Link to porn site baffles N.J. governor's aides: This is kind of funny, in a perverse kind of way.

A state Commerce and Economic Growth Commission Web site link to its "business resource center" took viewers Tuesday afternoon — and maybe for much longer — to full-color, hard-core teen pornography.

Learning of the cyber snafu, high-level state executives rushed to try to shut it down. But they initially encountered confusion. The porn popped up on some computers. On others, the link went to the proper business site.

Smells like a DNS propogation issue.

They won't hit the rest of the US stores until this Sunday, but the new Tamagotchi Connection virtual pets were released ahead of schedule yesterday in New York and Los Angeles. The main difference between the new and old Tamagotchi is the inclusion of wireless links that will allow different Tamagotchi pets to marry and have children. Think of it as an important introduction of children to the perils of online dating, without so much of the rashes.

The Kraftwerk-Asimov Connection 02/19/2004 10:08 AM
What robot builder didn't grow up listening to the electronic music of Kraftwerk? Now the connection between the Kraftwerk and Isaac Asimov's laws of robotics can be revealed. A new article in the Japanese paper, Daily Yomiuri, makes it all clear. Asimov created his laws of robotics and shunned stories in which robots were villified for the same reason Ralf Hutter and Florian Schneider have spent the last 30 years creating music with analog and digital electronics - they're technophiles working toward "complete harmony of man and machine".

North Pole Goes Wireless

North Pole Goes Wireless 04/15/2005 04:36 AM

The possible puns regarding this story are practically endless, though the Register does a good job of exploiting most of them: Two Intel employees set up a hotspot at a research camp at the North Pole. It uses Iridium phones for backhaul, which means the access is probably excruciatingly slow, but people at the North Pole probably aren't complaining. The deployment is purportedly meant to check out how the equipment fares in such cold, wet weather, though there are plenty of other such experiments that have been done for some time. Dave Hughes has done tons of work in Alaska with wireless networks and he was also instrumental in enabling the hotspot at Mt. Everest base camp in Nepal.

Intel Goes Wireless At North Pole 04/15/2005 09:59 AM

north_pole_kthx.jpgWhile not busy encouraging the destruction of the original 'Moore's Law' article, Intel's employees have installed a wireless hot spot near the North Pole. Built in the Arctic region at the Barneo ice camp, Intel Russia engineers installed an 802.11 b/g access point and established a connection with four of their laptops, 78 miles from the North Pole (using, of course, Centrino mobile technology to accomplish this feat). The hot spot has since been taken down, but survived the cold (-22°F or worse) and worked reliably. Of course, "Intel pointed to the experiment as an example of how mobile technology allows users to work anywhere," even if I can't get a signal in my own backyard.

AT&T Wireless Now Has 3G in Four
Cities
07/20/2004 04:20 PM
AT&T Wireless announced today--as was leaked last week--that they have 3G wireless available in four U.S. cities: Detroit, Phoenix, San Francisco, and Seattle are up and running at 200 to 300 Kbps right now with San Diego (take that, Qualcomm home town?) and Dallas coming by the end of 2004. Upload speeds aren't listed. AT&T will charge $25 per month for phone-based 3G service, with streaming video costing an extra $5 per month. Data plans are $80 per month. No word yet on whether the Motorola phone that works with this W-CDMA network will allow the same kind of sidestepping to connect a laptop via Bluetooth or USB to get the lower price. It does have Bluetooth built in, which is a good sign. Daily Wireless has a round-up of the announcement with details about the phone; they link to this Motorola press release with more phone details. The handset will cost about $300 before rebates or other deals. It has an integrated MP3 player, a large screen, three band (900/1800/1900) support, and handles GSM, GPRS, and W-CDMA. Laptop users will require a Merlin U530 UMTS card....

AT&T Wireless Will Launch 3G in Four
Cities Next Week
07/15/2004 03:36 PM
Reuters reports that AT&T Wireless is poised to roll out its W-CDMA 3G cellular data offering in Detroit, Phoenix, San Francisco, and Seattle next week: AT&T Wireless had been saying "by the end of the year," and this leak of a near-term launch is apparently surprising. The company is only promising 200 to 300 Kbps, but it's likely that W-CDMA will offer much higher burst rates, slightly slower than 1x-EvDO, which Verizon Wireless plans to spend $1 billion in the next several months to expand throughout major markets in the U.S. I expected a rollout in Seattle because AT&T Wireless is headquartered in this region--for the time being. The merger with Cingular will certainly result in an almost total shutdown in this area as there's no logical, only historical reasons for this geographical location. The service will require one of two phones from Nokia and Motorola to access. As TechDirt notes, AT&T Wireless has to launch service in four cities before the end of the year to avoid a requirement to repay $6 billion to investor DoCoMo. Elsewhere, I've seen this figure and deadline rejected by certain executives involved in the transaction, but I don't believe there's been a definitive refutation. [link via TechDirt]...

Telcos and cities struggling for
wireless deployment control
06/05/2005 11:48 PM

In a growing number of American states , city governments and telephone companies are struggling over policies determining who gets to rollout city-wide wireless internet connectivity. Telcos argue that cities offer unfair competition to their businesses.

Twenty states have already passed, or are trying to push through, legislation that would impose heavy restrictions on communities creating their own networks in areas already served by Bells and cable companies.
Thirteen of those states--Arkansas, Florida, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia and Washington--have passed bills restricting future public broadband projects, though existing initiatives are allowed to operate. The remaining eight have measures pending or have seen their bills fail to reach a vote.
