Future Intel Mobile Chips to Add
Location-Based Services
06/03/2004 01:35 PMThough it's impossible to consider without thinking of the
inevitable exploits (from Big Brotherish agencies and rowdy script
kiddies alike), Intel has said they are developing support within
their mobile processor line to allow computers to be aware of their
physical location at all times. Although nothing is set in stone yet,
Intel is working with others (Microsoft, for example) to add features
that would integrate simple things like, say, selection of which
printer to use based on proximity into future laptops and mobile
devices. Sounds okay, but also the sort of thing that will probably
hit all at once as mobile phones are already gaining GPS abilities and
Bluetooth short range communication -- soon all of our devices will
know where you are and will be happy to tattle to each other where
you're hiding, whether you like it or not.

Windows Update Services Delayed Until
Early 2005
07/23/2004 12:49 PMAs I do every week before sitting down to write this commentary, I
opened up the folder containing articles I've written this year and
it's easy to see a theme developing: By a wide margin, Microsoft
security topics have dominated this year's editorials--and it's not
something I planned. Like so much else I write, Windows & .NET
Magazine UPDATE's content is dictated by recent events. And as I write
this commentary in mid-2004, security is very much the number-one
topic. We just can't escape it.
The most recent security-related news is that Microsoft is delaying
its eagerly anticipated Windows Update Services (WUS)--the successor
to Microsoft Software Update Services (SUS)--from late 2004 until the
first half of 2005. I first wrote about WUS in Windows & .NET Magazine
UPDATE in March (
http://www.winnetmag.com/article/articleid/42119/42119.html ), and if
the beta is any indication, the implementation details haven't changed
since then.

The Past, Present and Future of Web
Services, part 1
The Past, Present and Future of Web
Services, part 1
09/30/2002 01:53 PMWeb services are somewhere around the crest of their hype cycle and
currently the darling of the prevalent media. This cresting is like
that of other technologies in that it precedes full development and
maturity. Web services, an undoubtedly important technology regardless
of media interest, have a good deal of development ahead of them.
Those who find success using Web services will be those who understand
the technology fundamentally: its motivations, the reasons why some
components are winning out over others, and the likely course of
maturity.
For this reason, I start with the history of Web services. This is no
mere nostalgic side-trip: the business and technical environment into
which Web services was conceived, and the various players that have
waxed and waned in prominence in their history to date are likely to
have a strong effect on the future of Web services. You can already
see this happening with developments such as the emerging role of
Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards
(OASIS) as incubator of security, workflow and transaction standards
for Web services. OASIS was once seen as the very opposition to
mainstream Web services. -- Uche Ogbuji
