Unwired Hump Rug

Unwired Hump Rug 07/09/2004 01:47 PM
No, silly, not that kind of hump rug. Neither shag nor shagging to be found here. FunFurde is an awesome new furniture design blog (a topic close to my heart, because my sis and I run this online office furniture company together). This post about a laptop-friendly floor-level lounger is a perfect example of why the site's bookmarkworthy:

"The KLOC Floor Lounger from Ligne Roset is basically a padded rug with a built-in hump. If you're thinking, 'There must be more to it than that' then you're thinking too hard. Rug. Hump. That's all you get."

Now, if only you could cram a wireless access point under that thing... Li nk

Unwired in Kashmir

Unwired in Kashmir 11/05/2003 10:58 AM
Tourism officials in India's conflict-torn region of Jammu and Kashmir want to woo foreign tourists back with Wi-Fi:

"Two months ago, mobile phones were forbidden in tense Indian Kashmir. Now, anyone can wirelessly surf the Web from the houseboats and gondolas dotting the waters of its famous Dal Lake. (...) 'This facility... [will] tap travelers who would like to remain connected to the rest of the world,' Jammu and Kashmir state tourism chief Saleem Beig said Monday. 'It goes a long way in sending the right kind of signals to tourists.'

Connexion by Boeing is popping up in airplanes all over the world: This overview of Connexion's technology, service, and performance appears at Tom's Networking, my first article for the site. Some of the Germany-based cohorts at Tom's Hardware provided information for the article based on Lufthansa flights they've taken. In general, Connexion is getting high marks for delivering consistent amounts of bandwidth with what seems to me to be remarkably low latency given the plane-satellite-ground station loop....

UK's Unwired Train 12/02/2003 12:33 AM
GNER launches Wi-Fi on trains, free in first class: Three British east coast lines now have Wi-Fi-based Internet service within the trains with satellite uplinks. Oddly, the article says that GNER has already run successful trials, but then notes that if this trial is successful (?), GNER will add service to 10 diesel and 30 electric trains. The article says pricing for passengers and availability in non-first-class cars hasn't yet been set....

'Escape-A-Date' ringtones help you lie

'Escape-A-Date' ringtones help you lie
like an (unwired) dog
08/04/2004 01:47 PM
Cingular Wireless recently introduced an odd new tool for subscribers. "Escape-a-Date" is touted as "the perfect service to use when you are afraid that your blind date may not be just right for you." Users schedule a "rescue" phone call at a pre-set time which tells them exactly how to lie their way into speedy escape. Eight randomly-generated humorous scripts are offered, here's a snip from one:
Hey, this is your escape-a-date call. If you're looking for an excuse, I got it. Just repeat after me, and you'll be on your way!

"Not again! Why does that always happen to you? ... Alright, I'll be right there." Now tell 'em that your roommate got locked out, and you have to go let them in. Good luck!"

It's actually not the first, um, wireless falsification enabler. Virgin Mobile USA also offers subscribers the option to set up a "Rescue Ring" to escape any situation -- romantic or otherwise -- by simply scheduling a time when they want to receive an automated system call. "Save yourself from bad dates, boring meetings, or any other situation that needs interrupting," says the Virgin website. Emily's Ringtoni a blog has more on the mobile fakeout meme. Doug Rushkoff has more on the Cingular service over at The Feature. And don't forget the web classic, Rejection Line. But really, people -- WTF ever happened to honesty? (via unwired list)

Hyatt Hotels and Mackniac Get Unwired

Hyatt Hotels and Mackniac Get Unwired 06/03/2004 10:19 AM
Hyatt joins the end of the long parade of hotels providing broadband access: Their service will be powered by T-Mobile HotSpot, and installed in their over 200 hotels and resorts by 2005. Meanwhile, historic Mackinac Island's Grand Hotel, while away from the fray, has full Wi-Fi: The site of many movies and a constant stream of business conferences, the the $300-starting-rate hotel includes Wi-Fi service throughout. Cell phones don't work well on the automobile-free resort, but at least you can check your stock quotes through an underwater cable connection....

Wired (and unwired) tech at the DNC in
Boston
07/27/2004 06:07 PM
From the NYT, an interesting piece on the geeky underpinnings of the Democratic National Convention's communication infrastructure:
Most cellular carriers are augmenting their coverage in Boston to make sure the surge in traffic does not lead to a rash of busy signals and disconnected calls. Nextel, the official mobile provider to both conventions, is deploying its iDEN network with encryption codes used by the National Security Agency to make sure no one eavesdrops on all the deal making.

The company is supplying modified BlackBerry devices that allow conventioneers to access the Internet wirelessly at high speeds. It has also helped connect the many public safety agencies, which typically communicate over different frequencies. Nextel expects its customers to log millions of minutes on its DirectConnect service, which turns cellphones into walkie-talkies.

"It's like organizing a wedding on steroids," said Matt Foosaner, senior director of Nextel's emergency response team, referring to the arrangements his company is making for the conventioneers. "They are not going to stay tied down to a landline."

Seattle Councilman Urges Unwired City

Seattle Councilman Urges Unwired City 06/08/2004 10:56 AM
Jim Compton suggests Seattle should move from most wired to most unwired city: The councilman is starting a task force today to discuss how to move forward. Seattle's topology makes it problematic to offer city-wide coverage, and there are issues of competitiveness with broadband providers and enablers, like Qwest, DSL, Comcast, and Speakeasy. I'm entirely in favor of this model of promoting competition. A city has certain inherent monopoly abilities that make it easier to work with utilities and gain access to spaces. But they also have higher costs, union issues, and other details that make it hard for them to be entirely fleet. Another player in the market can always help, however, by making the pool of customers larger....

Minneapolis Joins Unwired City Trend

Minneapolis Joins Unwired City Trend 04/12/2005 10:44 AM
Minneapolis plans outsourced city-wide network: The city will request bids on a citywide network to serve city workers, businesses, and residences, but Minneapolis won't have any ownership of the network nor will they put one red cent in. The goal of the network would be ubiquitous 1 to 3 Mbps coverage through Wi-Fi hotspots that would be tied together through what sounds like an entirely new fiber-optic network. That leaps this proposal into a much larger cost category, and explains why the city expects proposals from consortiums not individual companies. The city has talked to 26 potential bidders. Unfortunately, this otherwise accurate article states that Philadelphia's network will be owned and operated by the city; I've already written to them about this error. The piece also notes that two local companies offer WiMax, which isn't possible as the certification process isn't done yet, and confuses WiMax's point-to-point offering with the future mobile WiMax that will allow roaming. WiMax won't be too expensive for residential use when other alternatives aren't available or when operators are serious about competing on price: the higher initial cost can be offset by a lower ongoing capital cost for infrastructure versus wireline broadband, meaning that WiMax operators will eat more of the setup in exchange for contract commitments. This was true in the early DSL and cable modem days when those devices cost several hundred dollars each....
