Roy Disney resigns from Disney, slams
Eisner
12/02/2003 01:43 AM
Roy Disney has resigned from the Disney Board of Directors, and has sent a scathing email to Michael Eisner explaining, in exorciating detail, exactly why he's leaving the company his uncle founded.
1. The failure to bring back ABC Prime Time from the ratings abyss it has been in for years and your inability to program successfully the ABC Family Channel. Both of these failures have had, and I believe will continue to have, significant adverse impact on shareholder value.

2. Your consistent micro-management of everyone around you with the resulting loss of morale throughout the Company.

3. The timidity of your investments in our theme park business. At Disney's California Adventure, Paris and now in Hong Kong, you have tried to build parks "on the cheap" and they show it and the attendance figures reflect it.

Save Disney 12/11/2003 06:11 PM
Save Disney - in a followup to a previous and informative and link-filled MeFi post, a friend sent me a link to savedisney.com today which has three interesting documents: Roy Disney's resignation letter, Stanley Gold's resignation letter, and a letter from Roy Disney to all cast members. There's also links to email and show support, as well as links to all sorts of related informational sites. Is this ingenius guerilla PR from upset employees, or is there something deeper here?

A Disney Computer?

A Disney Computer? 08/05/2004 03:50 AM
The Walt Disney Company hasn't been particularly friendly with the tech industry lately, but maybe that's because they think technology is easy. They've apparently decided that, despite the general trouble most companies seem to have with selling PCs, Disney can do better selling their own PC for kids. It will, of course, come with all sorts of "proprietary programs" (would you expect anything else?) and something called "ContentProtect" which is apparently an email and internet filter (makes sense for a kid's computer). Of course, it's unclear how much control the parents will have over that filter or if it's a Disney-knows-best sort of thing. Also, the software will let kids create videos of themselves with the Disney characters, though it seems likely that these will be seriously locked down with copy protection, because who knows what someone might do if they could send around their own videos with Mickey... Of course, if that happened, Disney would probably just call up some of their friends in Congress to pass a special law just for them, while getting the FBI to bust down some doors as well.

Microsoft To Buy Disney?

Microsoft To Buy Disney? 02/13/2004 08:06 PM
Friday afternoon merger speculation... As everyone waits to hear who really is bidding on AT&T Wireless, another story is popping up wondering if Micros oft might come in and make a bid on Disney, now that Comcast has put Disney (involuntarily) in play. While it wouldn't be a surprise if others made offers on Disney, and Microsoft could easily afford them, I don't think Microsoft would dare do such a deal. I think they're smart enough to know that it would have a very high likelihood of causing more problems than it helped them solve. It would definitely take them off of their current focus, and they've shown no inclination to do that. Besides, as the article points out, Microsoft already own 7.4% of Comcast, and would own 4% of Disney should that deal go through - giving them plenty of influence. In other words... there's really nothing to this story other than idle speculation on a Friday afternoon.

Disney WWII-era propaganda An interview with Dave Bossert, the producer of a limite d-edition two-DVD set of propaganda films produced by the Disney animation studio between 1941 and 1946--many of these shorts, including Donald Duck's Der Fuehrer's Face, were previously available only as nth-generation bootlegs because of their stereotypes and politically sensitive subject matter. (Also included in the collection is the previously extremely rare feature-length 1943 animated film Victory Through Air Power, designed to convince the American public that the only way to win the war was investment in long-range bombers.) After standing up for Nightline's program listing America's dead soldiers in Iraq, it turns out that Disney, owner of ABC, is refusin g to release Michael Moore's latest bit of propaganda. Cowards. Moore goes over the top from time to time, but he's a smart filmmaker. Disney, like others in the entertainment business, should stand up for its creative artists. The First Amendment is at risk, folks, and such cravenness doesn't help defend it.

Disney selling off Celebration, FL

Disney selling off Celebration, FL 01/16/2004 11:35 AM
Celebration, Florida, the New Urbanist planned community that Disney built on the grounds at Walt Disney World, is being sold off as part of the general disintegration of the Disney company. I just finished Walt Disney and the Quest for Community, an academic book by a real-estate scholar about Walt's obsession with urban reform and the fascinating shift in the Disney Company's focus from building futuristic, ambitious domed cities (the original plan for EPCOT, the Experimental Prototype City of Tomorrow) to this modest, New Urbanist venture in which the emphasis was on high-speed data, alternative education, and building all the houses out to the curb to encourage inter-neighbor communications.
"I moved here because I loved Disney ? we had such blind faith," said Mrs. Shaw, treasurer of the association board. "But this was just a business venture for them, and now it's up to us. Their success is based on financials, and ours is going to be more, `Are you proud to live here? Do you love your life here?' "

Others, like David Manuchia, who owns two downtown restaurants, said they feared that the town might not be as well-oiled a machine without Disney. "There are enough trash cans, the streets are cleaned, the traffic is orderly," Mr. Manuchia said, citing how meticulous the Celebration Company has been, about special events in particular. "There is probably nobody better than Disney at making things run smoothly."
