Outsourcing Doesn't Always Save Money

Outsourcing Doesn't Always Save Money 11/18/2003 03:35 AM
We've talked about this befor e, but I think all this focus on "offshoring" is way overhyped. First, I think that the companies that are rushing to do it are doing an exceptionally bad job thinking through what they're doing, and aren't actually saving much money. In many cases, they're simply shuffling problems around in the mistaken belief that putting problems half way around the world will somehow solve them (instead of make things worse). While the numbers game suggests that you save money, the reality is proving otherwise. A growing number of companies that rushed to move jobs offshore are realizing that it's not saving them the money they expected. The cost of managing operations halfway around the world is extremely costly (in some cases 4.5 times the actual cost of labor - nearly wiping out the salaries that are 1/5 of what they are in the US). It also tends to slow operations down, since there's a limited time period of "overlap" where decisions that require input from both areas can be made. Meanwhile, I don't think all the "anti-offshoring" protesters are doing any good either. They're simply pushing for protectionist policies that aren't necessary and will actively do damage to our ability to compete. They should just let a few more companies realize their own mistakes, let the economy pick up a bit more, and suddenly the threat of all jobs heading to Asia won't seem so likely.

Report: some Napster users share
passwords to save money
04/09/2005 03:30 AM
Xeni Jardin: An article in the Register today reports that it is possible for more than one person to share a username/password simultaneously on Napster's digital music service, so they don't have to pay for separate accounts.
Over the past couple of days MusicAlly has run several tests, during which we were able to download and stream simultaneously from four separate computers across two separate Internet connections for good stretches of time. Our findings so far suggest this situation is the same whether we use a trial account, a paid-for credit card account or the £14.95 Napster To Go service. By comparison, several other Internet subscription services, including Real's Rhapsody, log the first user out automatically if a second user logs in using the same username and password.

Arguably the fact that one of the subsequent users could order one of Napster's paid-for permanent downloads, thus adding a charge to the original user's card, provides a small disincentive against sharing usernames and passwords. But Napster requires users to insert their credit card security number before making a major purchase, such as the upgrade from the £9.95 service to Napster To Go. What's more, the credit card numbers themselves are not exposed on the accounts page, so there's no danger of having your card details ripped off by someone with whom you're sharing the music service.

Travel Sentry: Save Money on Locks By
Letting Strangers Open Them

Travel Sentry: Save Money on Locks By
Letting Strangers Open Them
06/24/2004 11:13 AM

ts_generic_lock.jpg imageA new organization of luggage manufacturers called "Travel Sentry" has developed a set of combination locks that can be opened by not only their owner, but by agents of the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). Currently, TSA agents use bolt-cutters to remove any lock when searching through bags without the owner around, but by using a special code on the back of the lock or on a plate on the bag, agents can open the lock without having to destroy it. While the system may not be totally secure -- I'm sure at some point someone will figure out how to crack the key system -- locks on airline luggage are just simple deterrents anyway. If using a Travel Sentry lock will stop the TSA agents from snapping your padlock off every time they do a random check, so much the better. Travel Sentry will even replace a compliant lock if broken by the TSA.

Musicians Making Lots Of Money, Money,

Jeremiah writes "Amidst the public ballyhoo about how rampant P2P piracy is costing the music business its very life (gasp! NO!), BMI announced it collected a record level of revenue and royalty payout to its artist members. From their press release: "BMI has reported revenues of $673 million for the 2004 fiscal year, an increase of nearly $43 million, 6.8% over the prior year. Royalties of more than $573 million were distributed to our songwriters, composers and music publishers, an increase of $40 million or 7.5% from the previous year, and the most ever paid by an American PRO." Another interesting tidbit: "During the period 1995-2004, BMI had an average annual revenue growth rate of 9%..." If I read this right, BMI has been reporting solid growth over the last nine years, which makes me question the industry's claims about P2P. Either P2P ate into their growth (not mentioned), they found a way to cope with it (plausible), or it may actually help music sales. Whatever. Reminds me a bit of a spec I did for a life-insurance company's radio ad: Money , Money, Money (mp3 file)."

Money 2005: Microsoft Unveils Simplified
Approach to Financial Management and
Helps People Make Sense of Their Money
09/21/2004 08:41 AM
Marking the largest development effort for Microsoft(R) Money since the personal finance software was launched 13 years ago, Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq: MSFT) today announced Microsoft Money 2005 Premium, Deluxe, Standard and Small Business. Completely rebuilt to simplify daily financial tasks, Money 2005 is designed to answer the growing number of consumer requests for a simple solution that addresses the three primary areas of financial concern: tracking account balances, monitoring spending and paying bills. Consumers today have less time than ever to spend managing their finances, which has contributed to the number of American households banking online -- due to its convenience and efficiency -- reaching nearly 33 million.(1) Money 2005 builds on this trend by helping people access all their accounts in one place and providing automated tools that reduce or eliminate the manual entry required by traditional personal finance software.

A gitator. Blood doesn't politely trickle in Takashi Miike's films: it gushes out in (warning: NSFW, graphic) improbable fountains, painting walls and filling up small cars. His trademark point-of-view shots are taken from places other directors wouldn't dream of: the bottom of a dirty toilet bowl (as a man falls into it after being killed); within the ear canal (as it is pierced by a metal spike); even from inside a character's vagina. He has depicted incest, drug abuse, teenage prostitution, violence against women and children and small dogs, and necrophilia -- and that was just in one film, Visitor Q, his take on Pasolini's Teorema. Miike has just introduced his latest movie, Izo, at the Venice Film Festival (.pdf file). Miike is less sure about why Americans are now embracing Japanese horror films. His country's horror genre is influenced by "kwaidan," traditional Japanese ghost stories that feature revenge and malice: "The stories always have the 'hatedness.' You always bring the feelings of hate [that] you don't see in American cinema". What freaks him out the most, however, is the everyday automobile accident. "Even in a film, I can't bear to watch it -- it's so much (about) how people are weak, to be just crushed with a car. It makes me feel really depressed".
