Windows XP SP2 Delayed...again 08/05/2004 03:12 AM
Once again Windows XP SP2 has hit another delay. Although last night the SP2 team were partying at the "release of SP2" it wasn't clear what build was RTM and whether anyone had agreed on RTM. One thing that is for sure at the moment is that SP2 final will make it onto Windows Update/Automatic Update on the 25th August, anything before that (RTW network install etc) has been knocked back.

We'll bring you the latest dates as soon as the SP2 team have recovered :)

As I do every week before sitting down to write this commentary, I opened up the folder containing articles I've written this year and it's easy to see a theme developing: By a wide margin, Microsoft security topics have dominated this year's editorials--and it's not something I planned. Like so much else I write, Windows & .NET Magazine UPDATE's content is dictated by recent events. And as I write this commentary in mid-2004, security is very much the number-one topic. We just can't escape it.

The most recent security-related news is that Microsoft is delaying its eagerly anticipated Windows Update Services (WUS)--the successor to Microsoft Software Update Services (SUS)--from late 2004 until the first half of 2005. I first wrote about WUS in Windows & .NET Magazine UPDATE in March ( http://www.winnetmag.com/article/articleid/42119/42119.html ), and if the beta is any indication, the implementation details haven't changed since then.

When a content owner creates an audio or video stream, they can add script commands (such as URL script commands and custom script commands) to be encoded in the stream. When the stream is played back, the script commands can trigger events in an embedded player program, or they can open your browser and then navigate to a Web page. This behavior is by design

After applying the Update for Windows Media Player Script Commands (KB828026), some URL script commands do not fire even though they would be expected to do so. In addition to the URL script command issues, this package addresses an issue with the installer that would cause 100% CPU utilization in certain scenarios.

NTSC-J, PAL, and SECAM TV Tuner Hotfix
for DirectX 9.0b on Windows 2000,
Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003
(KB825116)
11/04/2003 11:37 PM
DirectX 9.0b was released on 7/23/03 to address the MIDI security issue identified in bulletin MS03-030. A small number of non-security fixes were also included in the release. One of these fixes caused several TV Tuner capture card/driver combinations using video formats other than NTSC (NTSC-J, PAL, SECAM) to no longer initialize correctly on Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003. Symptoms include loss of capture functionality and potential inability to set/retain device capture settings. This hotfix, documented further in Knowledge Base article 825116, has been issued to correct the flaw. 11-04-03 update: The English hotfix package has been modified to allow patching of all language installations supported by the affected Operating Systems.

European PSP Launch May Be Delayed 02/05/2005 10:17 PM

pspmarch.jpg imageSony has stated that PSP may miss its Europen launch date—again."(Europe) is a tough market because of the language issue," said Hiroshi Kamide, an analyst with KBC Securities. "The U.S. tends to be the easier target because you don't have to put so much effort into it to get a better return."

Kamide added that it might make better sense to take advantage of the current demand in the United States rather than try to rush a European launch.
