Although wireless LAN networks provide freedom of movement, they also require you to address security issues that are not as prevalent on a private cabling system for a wired LAN technology such as Ethernet. The main security issues are the authentication of wireless clients and the encryption and data integrity of wireless LAN frames. This article discusses the security issues of IEEE 802.11 wireless networks and shows how the Microsoft Windows XP operating system can be used to make 802.11 wireless networks as secure as the current set of 802.11-related technologies allow.

Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer &
Windows XP SP2

Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer &
Windows XP SP2
09/02/2004 12:15 PM

Microsoft Corporation reports that users who have installed the Windows XP Service Pack 2 (WinXPSP2) and wish to use the popular Microsoft Security Baseline Analyzer (MSBA) must update the security application due to changes in the way the new operating system handles security.

Use of MSBA is a security best practice that helps both corporate system administrators and individual consumers assess the vulnerability of individual workstations and home computers. MSBA offers specific guidance and suggestions to tighten the security of the Microsoft operating system and applications.

The new release of MSBA, version 1.2.1, includes a graphical and command line interface that can perform local or remote scans of Windows systems. MSBA is a free tool.

MSBA enables users of Windows 2000, XP, and Server 2003 to:
-scan for common system misconfigurations in their operating system and Internet Information Server (IIS), SQL Server, Internet Explorer (IE), and the Office application suite.

-scan for missing security updates in their operating system and IIS, SQL Server, IE, Office, Exchange Server, Windows Media Player, Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC), MSXML, Microsoft Virtual Machine, Commerce Server, Content Management Server, BizTalk Server, and Host Integration Server.

Windows XP Service Pack 2
Users of the Windows XP operating system who have not yet installed Service Pack 2 may download the free update from Microsoft's website or through the Microsoft Automatic Updates security download process.

Dave's Opinion
I've been a fan of Microsoft Security Baseline Analyzer since it was first released. I use it to ensure the security of our Windows workstations and servers. It works well both on single machines and our networks. I strongly recommend that all Windows users improve their computer systems' security with Microsoft Security Baseline Analyzer. It's an easy way to tighten the most common holes in Windows' security.
