Challenge to Stowe
Challenge to Stowe
02/05/2005 09:12 PM
Stowe Boyd and I are going
to do some debate somewhere - hopefully using Marc Eisenstadt's FlashMeeting technology.
BTW as a quick aside - I just found out that
Macromedia charges $7,000 for 2,500 simultaneous users of FlashCom -
the server technology behind FlashMeeting. If any coolio
open source gal or guy is listening - I'd DIE to get an open source
version of FlashCom. I promise i'll hussle the hell out of it - for
you.
Anyway - back to Stowe.
Stowe seems to grok the absurdness of
talking about talking - but what will he say when our Marqui program
starts conversations and memes around actual subjects like "How
Marqui saved me money" or "a Marqui a day - keeps my IT dept.
at bay".
I can't wait to debate Stowe. I'm gonna pull out all my techniques
at public performance, diaphragm support and snide combacks. All the
techniques John Kerry had none of. Ask somebody about the debate Dave
Winer and I did at a Stewart Alsop Agenda conference back in 1988.
:-)
One thing Stowe is right about - I was
iritated with Marqui. And they didn't fire me!
And Stowe is all wigged out that
Marqui would want to sponsor our debate. DUDE - haven't you
gotten the point yet?
ARE YOU SPELLING MARQUI's name right?
Good - then case solved.

Challenge: First one to break in, leave a file in the root, and
take the machine offline wins the contest.
Are you an Internet security expert at heart or by profession? Ever
thought of trying your skill at a professionally set up server? If you
are ready, enter.
The Linux Server Break-in challenge. You will have a server
available on the Internet 96 hours without interruption starting from
9 March 2005 2 AM IST. However, the server's life on the Net is in
your hands.
This server won't be protected by firewall. There won't be any fake
demons or honeypots as well. It will be running all the services
normally found in a regular Linux distribution and more.
I don't quite get the point, but I rarely do.

US and Big Sugar challenge WHO Plan
01/22/2004 02:12 AM US and Big Sugar challenge
WHO Obesity Plan William Steiger, of the US Department of Health
and Human Services sent a 28-page letter to the World Health
Organization on January 5th. On behalf of the Bush Administration, he
writes "rigorous scientific studies do not clearly show that
marketing fast foods or high calorie foods to consumers increases
their risk of becoming obese. Nor do scientific studies definitively
link particular foods, such as soft drinks or juices, or foods high in
fat or sugar, to a higher risk of obesity." Attacking the
science, protecting the status quo, it's a familiar tactic.
The WHO's efforts to combat worldwide obesity, and the reactions of US
Sugar and Food Manufacturers were already discussed
here last year. Now
that the plan is outlined, after 3 years of work, it recommends
"advising people to limit sugar and refined foods, restricting
junk food marketing, improving food labeling and raising prices on
unhealthy foods". The US, however, is demanding strong changes
before it signs off.

started this site primarily as a demonstration and to that end it's
already been a huge success.

03/08/2004 11:16 PMAs we approach March 13, lots of stories are being submitted
about the DARPA Grand
Challenge. Since our last update, Nature has
posted a short article on
the race with a small photo gallery of robots and a note about
environmentalists concerned that the event might disturb endangered
desert tortoises. DARPA now has a crew of "tortoise marshals" rounding
up any tortoises that stray into the event area. Doug McGray sent us a
link to his in-depth Wired
article (which includes quite a few photos). Seth Cabe emailed to
say that the Team
LoGHIQ website has been updated with new photos and video of their
robot. Globalstar issued a press release
recently saying they will provide tracking services for the race. Data
will be
collected from each vehicle and relayed via the Globalstar satellite
constellation allowing DARPA to update a map throughout the event.
And,
last for today, the L.A. Daily news recently ran a story
about the Spirit of Vegas
team, who aren't going to finish their robot in time for the race.

Unrehearsed Terrain: Red Team Technology for Grand Challenge 2004
(PDF format), explains the capabilities and limitations of their
navigation system. Both the hardware
and software are covered. There's also a section about the "lessons
learned" from the experience so far.
