Tortures for Dummies

Tortures for Dummies 05/11/2004 01:56 AM

Usually Tim Bray makes a lot of sense, but his recent post Torture didn't make much sense to me.  This is what he wrote about those soldiers at Abu Ghraib who are being charged:

This recent New York Times piece got me mad enough to provoke this essay. It’s a lengthy cri de coeur about those poor soldiers on the scene at Abu Ghraib, understaffed, undertrained, overworked. Excuse me? They’re torturers! They’re sick out-of-control sadistic animals. Can we have a sense of proportion here?

Apparently, he believes in the saying you are what you do.  In contrast, I am more partial toward you are a battleground of good and evil and everyone is capable of committing inhumane acts under the right conditions.

We know that inhumane acts can be brought about in many ways, most notorious being brainwashing.  To brainwash a person, one must have control over the victim's surrounding through isolation or immersion.  Isn't a prison an ideal environment for brainwashing whether the victim is a prisoner or a guard?  Can one brainwash oneself?  Definitely.  If your peers are brainwashed, what's you chance of being infected?

Even if you have the iron will, a rare property in my opinion, you won't last long under interrogation because interrogation is an art of not only pain but an art of brainwashing.  To break you, they will first break your perception of the world, twisting it as if opening a jar, aligning it into a position that will give, turning allies into enemies and friends into betrayers.  Guess who those soldiers were interacting with on daily basis?  That's right, professional brainwashers.

I am not saying they are all angels corrupted by evil interrogators.  What I am saying is that they are not too different from you and I.  The problem is not just them, but all of us.

You know what you did, but you know not what you do.

Anyone know of a site with really simple, step-by-step directions for adding some javascript to Thunderbird? I don't need general purpose info about javascript, but I do need handholding to figure out: 1. How you get TB to recognize scripts; 2. The specifics of interacting with TB's object model. So, a response to #1 would let me run a Hello World script from a button I've added to the TB interface, and #2 would get me started with a script that can read selected emails within TB. Or is this like asking someone for really simple instructions about how to...

The Virtual Mobile Virtual Network
Operator From 7-Eleven

The Virtual Mobile Virtual Network
Operator From 7-Eleven
04/27/2004 05:27 PM
Mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs) are nothing new. Virgin, both in the UK and the US, has been quite successful creating their own mobile phone carrier, despite not having a network of their own, but simply handling the branding and management, while leaving all the technology issues to a network operator partner. So far, most MVNOs seem to be targeting the youth market (often with "pre-paid plans"), and considering just how lucrative that market seems these days, it's no surprise that plenty of others want into the market. However, operating the whole MVNO is probably a lot of work, so now we're getting to the point where you have virtual MVNOs (VMVNOs) who will do all the work for a company, and simply slap their brand on the final product. That seems to be what's happening with convenience store 7-Eleven, who has announced plans to sell pre-paid mobile phones and service under the "Speak Out" brand - though, all the work appears to be done by Ztar Mobile. Other retailers are quickly expected to follow. Wal-Mart is at the top of the list, with Costco and Home Depot also apparently considering their own mobile phone offerings. The idea is to target younger users, or those with bad credit histories, who can simply pick up a phone at the store, and use it until their minutes run out, at which point they can top it up again - back at the store, of course.

Vonage Making VoIP For Dummies?

Vonage Making VoIP For Dummies? 01/09/2004 09:50 PM
For years, VoIP systems were slow to catch on for two very big reasons: (1) the quality really wasn't that great and (2) they were a pain to set up. The quality issue has pretty much gone away, and Vonage should get some credit for creating a popular solution that solves the second problem. Setting up a Vonage line is painfully easy, and makes many people think it's just an alternative phone line - rather than having them think about the fact that it's actually VoIP. Now, they're going one step further. They've teamed up with TI to build a single chip that will basically include Vonage's software features - making it much easier for companies to build hardware that will act as a Vonage phone. While, on the face of it, this may seem like a boring technology partnership, Om Malik points out that this is another step in the "Vonage Everywhere strategy, where they expand the possibilities of where and how you use the Vonage system. This is, indeed, big news. In fact, one of my issues with Vonage was that, in making it seem exactly like a standard phone system, they were actually losing some of the advantages that VoIP provided them. This partnership suggests that the "looks like a phone, acts like a phone" strategy got them out into the market, but they know they now need to take that and expand it beyond what traditional phones can do.
