The rise and fall of the Wintel empire

The rise and fall of the Wintel empire 08/05/2004 08:50 AM
That's how one analyst explained the recurring product delays at Microsoft, and the principle can describe similar problems at chip giant Intel. Instead of waking up sick and washed out, employees at these companies are seemingly dawdling a bit because of past successes and a hazy outlook. You can imagine the scene: You're a product manager for Windows. You wake up one day and hear analysts and competitors saying that Linux will begin to creep onto desktops. At the same time, the Linux desktop may not happen for several years. Your financial outlook is better than you ever expected back in college. At the same time, you also see few great opportunities for rapid internal advancement or lateral placement.

Get Ready for a Windows Fall

Get Ready for a Windows Fall 05/05/2004 09:50 AM
Microsoft is planning a big fall, Windows marketing-wise. Sounds like XP SP2 and the Tablet PC "Lonestar" release will be launched in September, as part of a "Protect Your PC" campaign. And a slew of other Windows products, ranging from the "Symphony" version of XP Media Center, to the new 64-bit version of Windows XP, will go live in October.

Stupid Broken Wintel

Stupid Broken Wintel 07/19/2004 09:36 PM
Lauren is going on a trip in a few days, and we thought that free videophoning would be nice to have while she’s on the road. She’s got a decent IBM Thinkpad X31 which has FireWire, and AIM is supposed to work with iChat A/V, so this should be possible. You can’t plug an iSight into Windows, so she got an “iBot” FireWire cam from Orange Micro. The Thinkpad has a FireWire port, but it’s a passive four-wire that doesn’t provide power, so she had to get a powered hub (this is already too much work). Then she fired up AIM and... no luck, it didn’t recognize the iBot; it did, however, let us audio chat back and forth. Windows XP saw the camera just fine and you could see the video. So we checked the iBot with the Mac, it worked perfectly with iChat. First, she spent some time on the Web Site; no help, but there was a phone number. She called it, pressed the number for tech support and a recording said “for tech support send email to support@.” So she sent the email and got back an auto-responder saying “for tech support go to the Website.” So she tried it with Yahoo Messenger, and it worked in webcam mode, incredibly slow, but then there was no audio chat. So we plugged in our big hand-held videocam and it also didn’t get recognized by AIM. So I’m not sure whether IBM sucks or XP sucks or AIM sucks or the iBot sucks. But it’s the iBot that’s going back to the store tomorrow. (Lauren would happily get a PowerBook except for, like a high proportion of the female population, she has sensitive fingertips and finds a touchpad massively unpleasant. Earth to Apple...) Sometimes I hate computers.

Linux Management Remains Overlooked by
Wintel Trade Press

Linux Management Remains Overlooked by
Wintel Trade Press
08/06/2004 09:23 AM
the Wintel trade press is waiting to get their slice of the desktop Linux vendors' marketing dollars before they'll connect the dots and recognize the value of thin clients. InfoWorld believes “Linux [is] nearly ripe for the enterprise desktop” but “for now, administrators are applying mass changes to deployed desktops via home-brew methods”, so it’s not really ready yet. They seem quite insistent on this; “ Manageability is a must for Linux to succeed on the enterprise desktop”, they say, making “obvious comparisons to Microsoft Windows -- including Active Directory, Group Policy objects, and Microsoft Exchange”. Oh dear. These sorts of comments make experienced Linux/Un*x folk smile sadly and turn back to their screen, happy to be as far away from Microsoft’s products as possible.

Republic or Empire

Republic or Empire 08/19/2004 09:40 AM
  • Gary Hart: The New Caesars. The United States cannot be simultaneously republic and empire. For evidence, see Rome (circa 65 B.C.). We salute the flag of the United States of America "and the Republic for which it stands." Since the time of the Greek city-states, republics have shared certain immutable qualities: civic virtue or citizen participation, popular sovereignty, resistance to corruption (by special interests) and a sense of the common good. Empires consolidate power in the hands of the few; seek expanded influence, by force if necessary; export centralized administrations to foreign lands; dictate terms to lesser powers, and manage foreign occupied peoples for their own political and commercial advantage.
