has blasted into the new year by not only landing a robotic vehicle
(the Rover Spirit) on the surface of Mars, but also by transmitting
the best photographs ever captured of the red planet. With that,
Spirit is now preparing to meander about the surface of Mars and
collect specimens of rock and soil -- the return of which is anxiously
awaited by scientists worldwide. Spirit landed and made its first
transmissions to earth earlier this week. And, as was planned by NASA
researchers, Sprit had landed almost directly in what looks to be an
impact crater, now nicknamed Sleepy Hollow. Researchers are excited to
explore that area and the many other craters and rock debris located
there. While the planet appears to be quite desolate, Spirit will soon
be joined by its twin, Opportunity. Opportunity is expected to land
next week on another part of the planet before beginning its own
exploration.
The first site takes visitors to NASA's
official Mars exploration site. Located here is all sorts of
information on the mission's purpose, a timeline of events, updated
photographs sent by Spirit, press releases, and resources for teachers
and students. The two news sites offer reviews of the mission. The
first is a detailed site from NPR.org and provides visitors with
several stories that have been dedicated to the mission. The second of
these is a review of the photos of Mars sent from Spirit. The fourth
site is dedicated to the geology of Mars. This site, from Albert T.
Hsui at University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, is a great reference
for delving into the details of Mars geology (as was known pre-January
2004). The next site is from the Denver Museum of Nature and Science
and provides a great description of the search for water (or the past
presence of it) on Mars. Discoveryschool.com offers the next site
which provides a great collection of teaching resources for educators
wishing to bring Mars into the their classrooms. The final site, from
BBCi, totes itself as containing "everything you need to know about
Mars exploration." And, it lives up to its claim pretty well. This
site offers a different perspective from the NASA mission by offering
a look into the European Space Agency's Express Mission and the
subsequent landing of the ESA version of the Spirit and Opportunity,
the Beagle II. [From The Scout Report, Copyright Internet Scout

proposals. Some are based on the US minimum wage, or on an average of
national minimums. Some are just arbitrarily set without explanation.
These proposals often quintuple the salary of workers in poor
countries. Here's a more conservative proposal based on a
combination macroeconomic/commodity approach. Also, an explanation of
the economic purpose of minimum wages.

again proved lethal: Three teens died, apparently of carbon monoxide

AOL Subscribers Dropping Fast, Still
Exploring Sale
01/05/2004 06:10 AMRemember the boom times when AOL would issue a press release every few
months about them adding another million subscribers? It seems they
aren't so proud heading back down the other side of the slope. The
latest subscriber numbers for AOL
don't look too
good, and while Time Warner continues to insist that AOL is not
for sale, the rumors are heating up again. The company lost 600,000
subscribers between September 2002 and September 2003. While they've
been signing up some new subscribers to their broadband offering, they
make a lot less money off of each of those subscribers. They also
admit that they expect to lose a lot more subscribers, and some
analysts are wondering why they don't seem to have any kind of plan to
stop the losses. Meanwhile, others are predicting that someone like
Microsoft or Barry Diller's InterActive Corp. may want to step in and
buy AOL - but it's probably still a little too pricey for what they'd
get.
Exploring New Roles for Community

12/16/2003 05:15 PMExploring New Roles for Community Technology Centers: Can CTCs
Serve as Nonprofit Technical Assistance Providers?http://www.compumentor.org
/ctcstudy/CompuMentor Report Examines the Capacity of
CTCs to Provide Technology Assistance to Nonprofits. Over the past
several years, much discussion has taken place in the nonprofit sector
and particularly in the community technology movement around the
evolving roles of community technology centers (CTC). One idea that
has received significant attention is whether CTCs may expand their
roles to act as nonprofit technology assistance providers (NTAPs).
With the support of the AOL Time Warner Foundation,
CompuMentor took a closer look at this issue and published its
findings in the report "Exploring New Roles for Community Technology
Centers: Can CTCs Serve as Nonprofit Technical Assistance Providers?"
CompuMentor's interest in this subject came from two vantage points.
First, as an NTAP we understand there is a very large unmet need in
the nonprofit sector for technology support services. Second, as a
provider or services and technical assistance to CTCs, we know that
sustainability is a huge challenge.
The key findings of the
report, conducted by Rem Hoffmann, include:
* Although CTCs
are perceived as tech-savvy organizations, they may not have the
capacity to function as NTAPs.
* Technology skills are only
one of five categories of qualifications necessary to serve as an
NTAP. Others are mission congruency, business capabilities, the
ability to subsidize the cost of providing service, and position in
the community. While a number of CTCs meet some of these
qualifications, very few meet all or most of them.
* NTAPs
reported that fundraising to subsidize the cost of providing services
was critical to succeeding. The report found that it costs much more
to provide these services than nonprofits are able to pay, which
directly contrasts the perception that CTCs acting as NTAPs can
generate earned income to support their other programs.
There appears to be a small subset of CTCs that can offer NTAP
services. The paper concludes with a recommendation to conduct further
research of new models for NTAPs and CTCs to partner to deliver
services to community-based organizations.
Sprint Still Exploring Wireless
Broadband Offerings
Sprint Still Exploring Wireless
Broadband Offerings
05/25/2004 04:03 AMMost people have assumed that Sprint was going to wait out this round
of wireless broadband offerings (especially after they had so much
trouble with their last attempt at a fixed wireless offering) and then
look to leapfrog folks like Verizon by going straight to an
EV-DV-based offering that would offer higher speed wide area wireless
broadband while also giving them the ability to upgrade their voice
network with the same equipment. However, as the buzz gets stronger
about all the new wireless broadband offerings, people are starting to
wonder if Sprint won't be able to wait that long and, instead, will
jump on board with a different broadband wireless technology
that's ready now. One analyst declared that Sprint would definitely
follow in Verizon Wireless' footsteps and look to offer a nationwide
EV-DO offering that would offer speeds in the 200 to 500 kbps range,
but do little to advance their voice offering (the DO is "data only"
as opposed to the DV, which stands for "data voice"). Sprint quickly
responded saying they haven't made a decision yet, and are still
looking at both EV-DO and EV-DV
and Flarion's FLASH-OFDM
technology that has been getting so much press lately with Nextel's
trials (which, while being much faster in terms of data rates leads to
other
issues, such as it being quite a different beast to deal with from
their other offerings). Still, it's looking like the wireless
carriers, who had been hoping to stay on the wireless broadband
sidelines a little longer, are beginning to realize that they need to
be making their bets pretty soon, or there may be nothing left at all.
