Free Site License To Online Office Suite
For Indiana Residents

Free Site License To Online Office Suite
For Indiana Residents
06/24/2004 08:01 PM
Last year, we had a story about the city of Houston ditchin g Microsoft in favor of an online office suite called SimDesk. There hadn't been much news out of SimDesk since then, but Broadband Reports points us to a story about a new SimDesk deal with the state of Indiana to provide SimDesk for free to every state resident for at least two years (and possibly longer). It sounds similar to some "site licenses" that many companies offer their employees or which universities offer their students, though SimDesk isn't getting paid for this. Instead, they seem to be doing it in exchange for an investment. Microsoft (just as they did in Houston) is likely to cry foul, and complain that the state is competing unfairly against them. It's also unclear from the article how they prove who is an Indiana resident (the site appears to require an address, but I imagine that could be faked). Also, what happens if someone moves out of Indiana? Either way, the state could just point people to something like OpenOffice, which is already free if they really just wanted people to have a free office suite, instead of having to set up a special SimIndiana site.

Developer Oliver Cameron has released Tag, an XHTML tool that allows you to make changes to Web site code and preview the results immediately, rather than uploading them and switching to a browser to make sure they work. It offers a system for color-coding different code styles, a snippets feature that stores often-used code for quick copying and pasting, auto complete for code that's typed repeatedly and more. It requires Mac OS X v10.3 or higher and its license fee is US$19.95. A demo is available for download from Cameron's Web site.

Internet news site offers bounty for

Internet news site offers bounty for
attackers
02/05/2005 10:11 PM
A German news site has offered a bounty of €10,000 (about $12,000 US) to anyone who provides information leading to the capture of the perpetrator(s) of a distributed denial of service attack against the site. The Age is reporting today that Heise Online, one of the biggest German publishers online, is seeking information about the machines that actively took part in the attacks on February 1 and February 2. According to the Internet Storm Center, Heise said the attacks targeted port 80 (on which a webserver normally runs), first hitting 193.99.144.71 and later 193.99.144.85. It said the sender addresses were spoofed and, in some cases, addresses reserved for private networks were used. Another similar attack targeted the Heise mailserver (193.99.145.50) on port 25 (the standard port for SMTP services) during the same timeframe. Heise said the logs of routers may show accumulations of packets which were 40 bytes long.
