Let Us Swim Upstream

Let Us Swim Upstream 07/15/2004 02:00 PM
Now that we're at the point of talking about how people are living a broadband life, isn't it about time we addressed the question of why all that bandwidth is focused downward? The internet is a communications medium, not a broadcast medium, and for people to really adopt broadband and all it can do, it's time that the broadband companies realized that people want upstream bandwidth as well. Notice that two of the only things that have been mentioned as "killer apps" for broadband, file sharing and VoIP, both involve upstream bandwidth as well as downstream. Yet, we're still in an asymmetric bandwidth world.

Aqua FM Swim Snorkel Radio

Aqua FM Swim Snorkel Radio 06/03/2004 03:11 PM

snaquafm.jpg imageAlthough it won't do you much good once you get under enough water to soak up all the radio waves, the Aqua FM Swim Snorkel will let you surface surfers listen to FM radio while you float, making it easier to ignore God's beautiful undersea creation. Even better, the Aqua FM snorkel uses no earphones, and instead uses bone conduction to pass the audio signal through your teeth right into your dome. And if you want to test the range of FM underwater, feel free; the radio snorkel is waterproof to 33 feet.

D.C. Looks to Wireless for Last Mile 01/26/2004 01:52 PM
The Washington, D.C. area has a number of small operators using Wi-Fi to offer high-speed access to businesses and residential Internet users: An In-Stat/MDR analyst estimates that about 1,000 small operators sell wireless Internet access but what's interesting about the D.C.-area operators is that they're targeting customers in or very near cities. Typically small operators have targeted rural areas that don't have any other option for broadband connectivity. Perhaps the popularity of using wireless in the home is making wireless seem a more acceptable way for end users to get Internet access. These companies can so easily distinguish themselves from the big operators by offering quality service and good customer service....
