Today, we look at Digital Rights Management. A key question here is: "Should you distribute your video online?" Movie industry figures who have watched what happened in the music industry with Napster and its successors are determined not to find themselves in a similar predicament. When a movie studio invests $50 million in a film, it wants to be quite sure the work is not going to be passed around Kazaa and BitTorrent like so many MP3s. By Pearson Education, Inc. 1025

Any Internet photo printing services

12/17/2004 06:35 PM

Out here with my cousins in the Bay Area the question of how to print some of those Thanksgiving photos arises.  Are there any Internet printing services that let you upload camera RAW format images and print from those?  That would be the best quality, presumably.  Please add any recommendations of good printing services for high-res files in the comments section.  Thanks!

Taking The Camera Out Of The Camera

Taking The Camera Out Of The Camera
Phone
11/04/2003 07:06 PM
We've had a lot of stories in the last six months or so about shortsighted companies deciding to simply ban camera phones outright. In the past, I wondered if such rules would have an impact on mobile phone sales, but I didn't expect the carriers to jump on this topic so quickly. Put me in the same surprised boat as Alan Reiter to hear that carriers are convincing mobile phone handset makers to offer multiple versions of their phones: one with a camera and the other without. I really thought that with only a few companies overreacting and missing the point about camera phones, it would blow over, and a decade from now we'd be laughing at silly companies banning camera phones. At this rate, that might not be true. This is going to be a huge waste of money. Designing a new phone will take some money, and will create a phone that offers less value to the customer (and less opportunity for revenue for the carrier). However as camera phones begin to find more acceptance in the marketplace, people are going to get angry when their boss tells them the expensive phone they just bought can't be brought into the office. They're not going to want to buy the version without the camera if part of the reason they're upgrading is for the camera in the first place. This is a (costly) over reaction to a technology that will do nothing to stop the real problem (theft of corporate secrets or invasion of privacy), but will cost lots of money and anger many people.

Baffling "poultry internet" video

Baffling "poultry internet" video 04/15/2005 03:35 PM
Mark Frauenfelder: Picture 1-18 I have to admit I have no idea what is going on in this video, but it's probably too weird to be a prank.

Apparently there's a research lab in Singapore that has developed a system involving robot chickens and real chickens that wear some kind of jacket loaded with sensors and vibrators. The researchers claim that when the system is in effect, people and poultry will get to know each other better. Or something like that. Just watch the video; the soundtrack is soothing.
Link (Thanks, Joe!)

Reader comment: Thomas J. Brown says: "Mixed Reality labs specializes in augmented reality. This chicken video is demonstrating their proposed 'Poultry Internet,' which is useful because, 'There is also a tradition of keeping poultry as pets in some parts of the world. However in modern cities and societies it is often difficult to maintain contact with pets, particularly for office workers. We propose and describe a novel cybernetics system to use mobile and Internet technology to improve human-to-pet interaction.'

"Honestly, who's funding this research?"

Linksys WRE54G Wireless-G Range Expander

Linksys WRE54G Wireless-G Range Expander 06/18/2004 09:28 AM

Hot on the heels of Apple's Airport Express comes Linksys's Wireless-G Range Expander, which at $99 is cheaper than the Apple option, but doesn't offer nearly the value, either. The WRE54G is only a range extender -- not an access point, like the Airport Express -- and of course doesn't do all the fancy iTunes streaming, which may or may not matter to you. It's designed to work with Linksys's Wireless-G routers and extends both Wireless-G and Wireless-B (the two 'almost standards' that generally work with 802.11b and 802.11g) by plugging into any available wall socket and pressing the 'auto configure' button. It's kind of fruity looking, too, but in a mildly appealing Rebel Hoth base equipment sort of way.

wcf54g.jpg imageThere's not much detail, but there really doesn't need to be -- Linksys has announced a CompactFlash card that supports their 'Wireless-G' standard, which if I'm not mistaken is what they call their not-quite-standard implementation of 802.11g. No word on price yet, but I wouldn't expect it to be much more expensive than the Wireless-B versions. Looks like the product number will be 'WCF54G.'

Linksys WRT54G Wireless-G Broadband
Router Easily Exploited
06/03/2004 01:35 PM

wrt54g.jpg imageHeads up, ye owners of the popular Linksys WRT54G Wireless-G Broadband Router. Even if you disable remote administration, the router will still allow users sharing your WiFi network to access administration web pages. That's not the end of the world unless you haven't changed your admin password, which if you're like most of us, coddled by fire-and-forget technology, you probably haven't. If you aren't taking any more steps to secure your router, at least do yourself a favor and change the default password to something else, preferably not the name of a pet, child, or the lady down the hall you've been sleeping with that you think, hey, nobody knows about but really, seriously, we all totally know.
Read [InternetNews via /.]

Update: Looks like it's not quite as bad as it could be, as the exploit only works if the built-in firewall has been disabled (it defaults to on). Still, wouldn't this be a great time to verify your settings?

for $88

wrt54g.jpg imageOkay, this on is a little hard to follow, but it's worth it, so stick with me. Amazon has the Linksys WRT54G Wireless-G router (the one that runs Linux that you can flash with the magic firmware to make it do all sorts of interesting tricks) bundled with a Wireless-G notebook card for $108 (there's a "Better Together" link on the product page). If you buy both, you can use the $10 rebate on both to save $20, then go on to qualify for a $20 gift certificate on future Amazon shopping.

So basically you're getting a really nice, tinker-ready Wi-Fi router for $68 with free shipping. Not a bad deal at all, but if you still aren't seeing why this is a good deal, you probably wouldn't want one in the first place.
