Familiarity Breeds Trust Online
12/23/2003 06:56 PMFamiliarity apparently breeds trust online. As people become used to
the internet
they're
no longer afraid to use it for all sorts of activities, and
include it as part of their everyday life. Thus, early online fears
about how no one would ever use their credit cards online are pretty
much forgotten - even though the risk of having your credit card
number exposed has gone up. People now consider the internet to just
be a part of how they live now, and don't think of it as new or
different any more. That is, of course, good for internet businesses,
but not so good for those concerned about online risks - which could
explain the rise in identity theft. There are a lot more "easy"
targets, it seems.

A few folks in New
Zealand have developed the next natural evolution of an old children's
staple: the bedtime story. The book reads like a normal book, if
desired, but when accompanied with a handheld (or head-based) display
and computer vision tracking technology, the story comes to life in
front of them. In another example of augmented reality bringing us
really cool stuff, the director of the lab working on the project
tells us "You can see animated virtual characters overlaid on the real
book pages and hear the voice of [the narrator] reading the story."
Technology Review's article explains what's keeping this technology
from coming to market, at least for now, and when we might see it
outside of the lab setting.

Why You Should Start Using RSS
Why You Should Start Using RSS
06/03/2004 12:23 AMWould a
Big Media Company Lose Traffic if They Supported RSS?
"Almost certainly these are the early days of a developing medium.
By getting into RSS in 2004, you can get ready for what comes next in
2005. I'd argue that not only is it necessary today to be publishing
in RSS, but your organization should also be a user of RSS. Your
editorial, advertising people and execs should subscribe not only to
your own feeds, but also subscribe to those of your competitors and
bloggers. Then in 2005 you'll see with your own eyes what follows and
be able to participate. This may be the most important reason to get
involved with RSS now." [Really Simple

is also receiving renewed interest from corporations and having
conversations with unnamed PC makers about preloading the browser on
their machines. "That has not happened before," he says.

“In an advance that could lead to lighter spacecraft and
smarter cars, researchers have developed a new technique for producing
a high-quality semiconductor that’s much more resistant to
extreme conditions than the silicon found in most of today’s
electronics. Devices built with the rugged material would not require
cooling and other protections that add size, weight and cost to
traditional silicon electronics in power systems, jet engines,
rockets, wireless transmitters and other equipment exposed to…
