Get Ready for Some Hand-to-Hand Combat
(washingtonpost.com)
05/07/2004 10:46 AMwashingtonpost.com - Cue up the "dueling handhelds" theme: The video
game wars are starting anew, with competitors Nintendo and Sony in a
fierce fight for victory on the handheld gaming battlefield.
Game Makers' Hand-to-Hand Combat
Game Makers' Hand-to-Hand Combat
05/06/2004 05:51 AMNintendo is in danger of getting slapped silly by Sony twice in a
decade. As Sony preps a new whiz-bang handheld video-game machine,
Nintendo will answer with the upcoming DS. If the DS flops, Nintendo
is in big trouble. By Daniel Terdiman.

03/12/2003 03:54 AMThe NYT is reporting that AOL is providing software to customers to
block pop-ups. The sheer number of ironies in this
article is
simply delicious, and renders further comment unnecessary:
1) "AOL pioneered the often annoying but effective pop-up
format"
2) "10 percent of its users had chosen not to receive
pop-ups from AOL's own service, an option that has been harder to find
than the new blocking software." Hard to find? Almost impossible.
3) "the number of sites that will accept pop-ups is
increasing, including ever more sites owned by AOL Time Warner like
Mapquest and CNN.com."

OTC Obi-Wan Lives?
05/21/2004 02:28 PMA new Probe Droid is on the prowl; this week asks whether collectors
would like to see a ‘non-spirit’ version of the new OTC Obi-Wan
figure. Similar to what Hasbro did with the Jabba's Palace Luke, the
rather impressive OTC Spirit figure has many fans begging for an
opaque version; should Hasbro comply? Look for the latest Probe Droid
ballot now, and cast your vote today!

IO Data Device has announced a 256MB
MultiMediaCard, the "MMC2-256M." I had pretty much ruled out MMC as a
popular flash media ever since the days of the Diamond Rio. Panasonic
and friends basically ate it alive with SD, but it seems IO Data
hasn't given up hope. Since modern SD slot devices can also take MMC
(the dimenisons are the same), you're still good to go.

GPLFlash lives again
GPLFlash lives again
06/05/2005 11:36 PMThe original GPLFlash project, which was meant to bring to GNU/Linux
the ability to play Macromedia Flash movies, stalled when Macromedia
released a 32-bit binary Flash Player for Linux. Because of that, and
because of a lack of development help, the last significant update to
GPLFlash was in June 2000. But in the past year there has been a surge
in developer interest in the GPLFlash project, and now it's back, with
greater stability and fewer bugs. Unfortunately, it would take a
complete rewrite of GPLFlash to play the vastly different Flash 6 and
Flash 7 file formats. That's why GPLFlash2 is now under development,
with the goal of being a fully Flash 7-compliant replacement for the
restrictively licensed Macromedia Flash Player and browser plugin.
DaynaFile Lives!
DaynaFile Lives!
01/09/2004 09:56 PM
Going from one memory to another, I was surprised to find many
references to DaynaFi
le by
Google. Ages ago, I was contacted by a company based in Salt
Lake City: Dayna
Communications. They needed someone to write system software
that enables Macintosh
to read PC disks. What a crazy idea, I thought.
Anyway, I was one of the few guys outside Apple who could write
such stuff so I spent
a year communiting back and forth. Why so long? Well, I
had to convince
Mac that 5 1/4 inch PC disks were Mac disks and integrate
seamlessly with the Finder
as well as other Mac applications. Bridging various
differences between DOS
and MacFS, particularly Mac's resource fork, was real fun too.
After the product shipped, I ran across some Dayna folks at a
MacWorld show demoing
the stuff and they told me that, when one of their customers
found my name displayed
prominently on the boot screen and asked about it, they had to make
up a story about
Don Park being a code name for the project. Oops!;-p

New
generation lives to see another Che "Che Guevara is widely
remembered as a revolutionary figure, to some a heroic, Christ-like
martyr, to others the embodiment of a failed ideology. To still
others, he is just a commercialized emblem on a T-shirt.
But for Latin Americans just now coming of age, yet another image of
Che is starting to emerge: the romantic and tragic young adventurer
who had as much in common with Jack Kerouac or James Dean as with
Fidel Castro.
The phenomenon began a decade ago with the publication of his
long-suppressed memoir known in English as "The Motorcycle
Diaries," which has become a cult favorite among Latin American
college students and young intellectuals..."

Expensing's Seven Lives
06/16/2004 11:33 AMMercury News (reg req): Panel
OKs measure to block expensing. A congressional committee
overwhelmingly approved legislation Tuesday that would block a
proposal to force companies to deduct the cost of stock options.
This is a cheap vote by committee members for legislation
they surely suspect will never become law. It shouldn't become law.
The system has worked to the vast benefit of Silicon Valley companies,
which understandably want to keep the gravy train rolling, but now
they should do the right thing. The time has long since passed when
companies should honestly reflect the value -- the cost to
shareholders -- of stock options in their income statements.
Shareholders will understand, if reported earnings drop due to
expensing of options, that nothing fundamental in the company has
changed. Today, profits are overstated, and shareholders seem to grasp
that without much trouble. They aren't as stupid as the tech industry
seems to think.
