Who Wants to be a Google Millionaire?

Who Wants to be a Google Millionaire? 04/28/2004 11:31 AM
The other big news, of course, is the perennial speculation over whether Google will go public and make everybody rich... John Markoff: "Google ... is expected to take a tentative first step next week toward a public stock offering, a person close to the company said." The New York Times discusses who owns Google shares (and thus stands to make a lot of money). The real question for me is how much the employees will get. "Those close to the company say that Google's top executives are under pressure because of fears that it may damage employee morale if they do not move ahead quickly to give them an opportunity to turn their shares and options into real wealth." It's not too late to apply! Then there's the Times again, which bizarrely mistakes April Fools jokes for vision: "The ambitions of the Google founders wander further afield. They have talked about building space transporters and implanting chips in people's heads that can provide them with information as they think." Brin, always the comedian: Google was avoiding a public offering because "that's a lot of work, and I'm lazy. [A public offering] requires filling out a lot of forms. The S1, in particular, seems like a really long one." And also, there's no better way to screw up a good thing than by throwing billions of dollars at it....

FBI Worried About Evil Videogame
Millionaire Terrorist Threat

Oh that FBI. They sure can raid high schools to stop file sharing, but when it comes to tracking down terrorist threats, it appears that they're a little confused by reality. LawMeme points us to a story about how the FBI was especially worried about "reclusive but evil millionaire" Don Emilio Fulci who supposedly "had formed a terrorist group that was planning chemical attacks against London and Washington, D.C.." The threat was considered so great that it was listed in their daily "threat matrix" and FBI director Robert Mueller was briefed. Apparently, it took a bored Whitehouse staffer to do some research on Google and figure out that this "evil" millionaire was actually just a character in a video game. Of course, I just did a Google search on the name and not much turns up other than the US News article linked here. Yahoo's search, however, turns up an FAQ for the video game.

P2P Against Child Porn

P2P Against Child Porn 05/06/2004 01:32 AM
Last year, when other attacks against peer-to-peer file sharing systems weren't working, the entertainment industry pulled out the "porn" card, saying that the file sharing networks were chock full of child porn and it was a danger to anyone using it. Of course, you could say the same thing about the internet, but all the hype even convinced Senator Hatch to push legislation against P2P networks due to all that porn. Realizing that they had something of a PR problem on this issue, it appears the various P2P networks decided to team up and do something to show how they're actually helping to catch child pornographers. They've been working with the FBI to help them track down those responsible for child porn, and are now looking at setting up a system to let users flag child porn so that the networks (and the FBI) can track it down (though, you wonder how quickly that flag will be abused: don't like a song? call it child porn). Finally, in a move that's much more about the good publicity it can generate than actually catching pornographers, they're going to start posting pictures from the FBI's most wanted list of child pornographers on their websites.

Child of Koguryo

Child of Koguryo 08/20/2004 11:51 PM

My father's family root lies north of the 38th parallel, somewhere near the controversial nuclear plant.I never been there but I will have to someday when my father dies so he can be buried next to his parents and ancestors.  While I was born in Seoul, Korea, I have always thought my father's home village was mine also.

Likewise, I have always thought I was a child of Koguryo, an ancestial Korean kingdom from the past because of my father's family roots and, as silly as it might sound, how we look and behave.  I also liked that Koguryo was a warrior's kingdom, much more so than the kingdoms that followed like Chosun where Confucious scholars introduced a caste system and placed themselves at the top.  Well, pen proved to be of no defense against swords when Japan invaded.

From Austin Ramsey's Times Asia article Rewriting History:

In A.D. 612 an Imperial Chinese army of more than a million soldiers marched on the northeast Asian kingdom of Koguryo. Though vastly outnumbered, the soldiers of Koguryo—whom many modern-day Koreans see as their ancestors—routed the Chinese in a victory that is still a source of pride on both sides of the DMZ.

Now, almost 1,400 years later, Chinese scholars are attempting a subtler land grab, claiming that the ancient kingdom of Koguryo was a part of China—a "regional government founded by an ethnic group," as Beijing's state-run Northeast Asia Project put it in June. The argument isn't just academic.

This feud over history is very important to me because Chinese scholars, sponsored by the Chinese government, are threatening an important part of who I am.  My feelings are shared by most Koreans and there has been an upswelling of anti-Chinese sentiments in Korea, particularly among the young.  A good indication is an increasing number of amateur future history novels in which united Korea invades China to take back the land it lost over the years.

While the Koguryo part of me wishes the same, I would be happy if China just left Korean history alone before wishes become future bloodshed.
