David Pescovitz:

A couple months ago, I
posted about the Minnesota Association of
Rogue Taxidermists. One of the members, Sarina Brewer, is a taxidermy
artist with a wonderful sense of the curious and surreal. Her
exquisitely executed "gaffs" (fakes) range from various siamese
siblings to winged cats to enchanting renderings of the classic Feejee
Mermaid. And her prices are quite reasonable.
From Sarina's bio:
Her lifelong obsession with biology often focused on
genetic mutations. Study of these deviations of nature eventually led
to the the discovery of circus sideshows and "freaks." This influence,
as well as a slightly warped sense of humor, manifest themselves in
her strange cryptozoological creations and each peculiar artifact she
creates. Now incorporating her past formal art education with her
passion for biology and the bizarre, you are invited to peruse the
culmination of nearly three decades of the study of art and the
natural sciences in her eccentric works.

More About Custom DTDs
06/05/2005 11:24 PMYour web page uses non-standard elements, so, following the advice of
earlier ALA articles, you bang out a custom DTD to make sure your
document still validates. Not so fast, says the W3C's Quality
Assurance team, who argue that crafting a custom DTD for the sole
purpose of validation is a mistake ... and then tell when it is the
right thing to do. By the way, we are pleased to have the W3C QA
team as ALA authors, and look forward to more.
Validating a Custom DTD
Validating a Custom DTD
02/01/2005 09:28 PMIn his article in this issue, Peter-Paul Koch proposes adding custom
attributes to form elements to allow triggers for specialized
behaviors. The W3C validator won't validate a document with these
attributes, as they aren't part of the XHTML specification. Not to
worry! This article will show you how to create a custom DTD that will
add those custom attributes, and will also show you how to validate
documents that use those new attributes.

06/18/2004 12:22 AMNot so long ago, I wrote

piece about open document formats. Just today there was an
interesting (as always)
follow-
up from Jon Udell, but what I wanted to address here is
Dare Obasanjo’s take, which is
pretty well the Microsoft party line (not that Dare’s always a
party-line guy): the Office software and its document formats are
winners because they allow the use of custom schemas for office
documents. That’s more important, they say, than the dodgy
licensing terms and the missing pieces. I used to believe that custom
schemas for office documents were generally a good idea, but I no
longer do. Here’s why...
Custom SiteSearchers
Custom SiteSearchers
07/14/2002 01:19 PMAnil Dash writes in to let us know that Sun's Java Search has a
customized interface to Google. They join Cisco, Redhat, BBCi, the
Apple Developer Connection and Earthlink in taking advantage of
Google's hosted SiteSearch program. Also, Yahoo!, Alexa (which has
some very nifty screenshots and collaborative filtering) and Netscape
use Custom WebSearch to provide customized views of Google searches.
According to Google, the results "are available via HTTP and can be
formatted in XML or Google's proprietary protocol." So I suspect the
server simply makes a call to Google's XML feed and reformats the
results. This is an interesting alternative to simply handing users
off to the Google site. In other news, thanks to a note from mpt, I've
added a link to Google SiteSearch for this site so you can search just
the Google Weblog....

extensive
Extending PHP
section which is pretty good.
I've never had the time to learn how to write PHP extensions before
this. The only free time i have to learn this is at home, where i
don't have a Linux box, but i do have VC++. It's really really painful
because i haven't coded in C for about 2 years, but you don't forget
your roots.
I've been saying for years that we can port ADOdb to C if we really need the
speed. Now i can do it, if we are all willing to endure constant bugs
for a couple of months. Might even drive me crazy, C is no longer easy
for me (err, when was it ever easy...).
Now that i'm in the mood, how do i write a cross-platform extension?

Unisys suddenly loves Linux: Should
Linux users return that love?
08/16/2004 02:19 PM Unisys has long been the main booster -- possibly the only one
besides Microsoft -- of Windows as a mainframe operating system. Now
Unisys says it loves Linux -- but still claims to be a staunch
Microsoft partner -- and it seems like most of its contributions to
the Linux kernel are only useful to Unisys customers. And then there's
the specter of the Unisys GIF patents (now expired), and how the
company used them as weapons against free and open source software
projects only a few years ago. In light of all this, should we welcome
Unisys as a "member of the Linux community" with open arms, or
maintain a skeptical distance until the company proves that it has
truly seen the open source light?
