Monitoring with Simple Event Correlator

Monitoring with Simple Event Correlator 06/05/2005 10:53 PM

Have you ever wanted to get involved with open source development, but weren't sure where to start? This edition of Linux.Ars has some handy hints on how to get your feet wet.

The key is to start small and pay attention. Pick a project that interests you. Join the mailing list — that's where most of the development discussion likely occurs. Idle in the project's IRC channel. Write a patch; fix a bug; add a feature.

Along with that is a really cool edition of Tools, Tips, and Tweaks covering how to configure the Simple Event Correlator to go through your logs and pick out events that should be reported. It's extremely configurable and very powerful to boot. There's also the Cool App of the Week, and a whole lot more.

Peter Caputa unveils one of his secret weapons.

How to make money from Events.

This is just the beginning of a new era - where smart entreprenuers like Peter show us how to make money from micro-content.

Congrats to Peter and the WhizSpark team!

No wonder he's been so busy. But NOT too busy to help start OpenEvents!

Here's Peter's post.....

Welcome to the Unveiling of WhizSpark's secret Sauce. Most of you have seen the social network - mailing list tools - event directory part of WhizSpark.

And then you thought... "Do they really think they will make any money from that site?". The answer is probably no. That won't pay the bills or bring us to our next liquidation event. Unless, of course, we follow the monetization path of Friendster and MySpace of littering your screen with ads.

So, what will?

(Take a deep breath b4 you read this next sentence)

We are providing incentivized viral word of mouth permission based email marketing and branded hosted event websites with social networking functionality as promotion services for event planners, venues, charitable organizations, political campaigns, business seminars, musicians, conferences, etc etc..

I was waiting until I could show it, to talk about it. Because it is obviously not that easy to explain.

We are pleased to announce our first 3 big events/sales:

Edd ie Kennison Foundation's Celebrity Fashion Show, Dinner, Silent & Live Auction, Comedy Show.

Wor mtownnightlife.com 2005 Madden VideoGame Tournament.

Red 1888's Model Search Competition by Spothound.com (R-rated)

So, if you know anyone that qualifies as a customer (see the aforementioned list above), please send me an email or them an email. We'd love some referrals.

And if you are interested in any of those events, let me know and I can hook you up.

Jean-Luc Fontaine is 47 years old. He has a lot of varied interests including physics, martial arts, motorcycles, the blues, and free software. He lives and works today in MIS in Bordeaux, France, where he says the greatest wine in the world is made. He worked in the Silicon Valley, Japan, and Paris before settling in Bordeaux. And speaking of an interest in free software, the code that he used to write his monitoring package called Moodss has earned high praise from Eric Raymond in his new book "The Art of Unix Programming", where he writes "The code is polished, mature, and considered an exemplar in the Tcl community."

If your job is to create enterprise class software, you don't need to lie awake at night wondering whether your application is still running. In this article, Francis Shanahan shows you how to build enterprise class peace-of-mind into your .NET software and finally get the sleep you deserve!

Monitoring wikis worldwide

Monitoring wikis worldwide 01/01/2005 02:58 PM

Newsfeed search engines like Technorati, Feedster, and PubSub make it easy to monitor blogs and news sites. You can subscribe to a search newsfeed to be alerted whenever a blog entry or news items matches your search criteria. But how do you monitor all of the wikis of the world? The newsfeed search engines don't monitor wiki recent changes newsfeeds, or do they?

I googled and turned up some wiki pages on InterWi kiSearchEnginesDiscussion and UnifiedRecentChange s.  Looks like there is plenty more work to be done in this area.

AirMagnet Beefs Up Monitoring

AirMagnet Beefs Up Monitoring 03/08/2004 11:15 PM
AirMagnet is introducing a new version of its distributed WLAN monitoring platform: The updated platform includes a completely new user interface, new rogue detection blocking and tracing, and policy management features. AirMagnet customers place sensors throughout their WLAN network which sniff the air for unauthorized APs. From a central console, network administrators can view every AP in the network, including those in remote offices that may be around the globe. In the previous version of the product, the sensors could only identify rogue APs when their MAC address wasn't authorized. Now, the sensors can identify rogues based on manufacturer, MAC address, and SSID. If a rogue AP is found, it can be remotely disabled essentially by jamming it. "But that doesn't pull its socket out of the wall which is what you want to do," said Rich Mironov, vice president of marketing for AirMagnet. Administrators can set how they'd like to be notified if a rogue is detected, including via a pager, and then they can go to the location of the rogue and physically disconnect it. Users can also identify APs that might be in range of a sensor as a neighbor AP. The feature would be useful for companies located in office buildings where a nearby company may also have a WLAN with signals that bleed into the next door office. Once an AP is set as a neighbor's, the AirMagnet sensors won't send alarms based on its settings. The sensors also flag APs that use the manufacturer's default password. Using the manufacturer's password is a security vulnerability because anyone could find out what that password is and use it. The AirMagnet sensors can also be set to monitor security policies, which may differ from AP to AP. Any time those security policies are breached, the sensors alert the administrator. Mironov stresses that the platform doesn't just identify issues. "It's a network overlay to diagnose problems and tell users what to do," he said. For example, when the sensors find an AP using the manufacturer's password, the software describes to the administrator why that's a problem and recommends that the administrator change the password. AirMagnet's platform is often criticized by the new WLAN switch vendors because AirMagnet requires customers to deploy a separate network of sensors to monitor the air. "I agree in principle that the monitoring should be built in," said Mironov. Ultimately, he hopes that an...
