07/30/2004 10:02 AMBANGALORE, INDIA -- Microsoft Corp. denied Thursday that core
development work for Longhorn, its next version of the Windows
operating system, was being done by contractors in India. Earlier this
week, the Washington Alliance of Technology Workers (WashTech) in
Seattle said that it had learned from Microsoft's internal documents
that the Redmond, Washington, company was outsourcing core development
of Longhorn to Indian contractors.

07/26/2004 12:50 PMMicrosoft's next-generation operating system, Longhorn, will be
compatible with high-definition DVD, the company's Japanese unit said
Monday.
The show of support from Microsoft is considered a boost for the
next-generation, blue-laser DVD technology, which is promoted by
Japanese conglomerates NEC and Toshiba.
Blue light, with a shorter wavelength than the red laser used in
conventional DVD recorders, can read and store data at the higher
densities needed for high-definition recordings.

The Shifted DJ?
The Shifted DJ?
06/21/2004 02:07 PMOne of my goals for the near future is to set up a Shoutcast stream of the music on my
home computer in order to listen to it on the go on my Treo 600
using the fabulous Pocket
Tunes program. Icecast may
also be an option, but that's as far I've gotten in my research.
Tonight I had another thought. If I put a TV tuner card in my
computer, will it receive Comcast's digital music stations (which are
commercial-free), which I could then turn into Shoutcast (or
other) streams? Can I make my own version of satellite radio (albeit
an inferior one) using a service to which I already subscribe?
Please leave/send comments or suggestions about this idea!

06/28/2004 10:08 AMSo I finally got a Shoutcast Server
working with the WinAmp DSP
plug-in on my home PC, and I'm able to stream it to Pocket Tunes on my Treo. How
cool is that?!
Of course, now I have to find the time to create playlists for the
various scenarious in which I envision myself using this. For example,
the first one I want to create is a baseball-themed one for between
innings at Brent's games. I plan to wow the other parents with this
one! After that, maybe a library-themed one that I can play as people
slowly congregate in the room where I am giving a presentation.
Oh, the possibilities!...

Shifted Libraries on WEB4LIB
Shifted Libraries on WEB4LIB
03/14/2005 06:23 PMOver on the WEB4LIB
mailing list, there's been a fascinating discussion evolving about
marketing, ubiquity, and library web services. It kind of starts here
in a comment about Gmail but you'll need to use the date
index to follow where it goes.
You already know where I fall in the debate (I'm closely aligned
with Kare
n Schneider's and Alan
e Wilson's responses), so I'll just encourage you to read through
the whole thing (watch the subject lines - they morph into new ones)
because it's one of the better discussions I've seen on the topic
lately with lots of good points. Finally, we're seeing a more
aggressive conversation!
One thread I do want to highlight (well, I hope it becomes
a thread), is Stephen De Gabrielle's attempt to suggest a course of
action. There were other suggestions, but this is a new one that could
help long-term if we can get the vendors to agree to it.
"Why don't we have a common API for all ILS? - and demand
these of our ILS vendors.(Libraries have always led the way in
standards.)
I assume this list is as good a place as any to start the
process.
What do list members think would be appropriate services for such
and API?"
Maybe then we could focus all of our various programming efforts on
the greater good instead of just our own local catalogs.

"A cool blog from OCLC Online Computer Library Center staff about
all things future that impact libraries and library users. A
conversation that starts with the Environmental Scan and goes from
there."
And there's an Atom
feed since it's on Blogger.

Leaner Longhorn From Microsoft
12/30/2004 02:26 PMPartners first heard whispers about Longhorn, the innovative
next-generation of Windows with a completely new kernel, way back in
2002 or earlier. It was supposed to be in beta in 2003. Didn't happen.
This year, Microsoft finally 'fessed up about its Longhorn travails,
and in the process unveiled some significant technical compromises it
would make to get the operating system out the door for its official
release date of late 2006 (for the client) and late 2007 (for the
server).
The compromise in question is the decision to take Longhorn to market
sans its most heralded, new feature, WinFS (Windows File System).
WinFS is a unified file system that would sport innovative search
capabilities that make retrieving an array of desktop system file
types much simpler. Apparently, developing WinFS is anything but
simple, however, and certainly not easy enough to do by the first
release of Longhorn. To soften the blow, Microsoft has promised to
deliver two other key Longhorn components, the Web
services/communications subsystem Indigo and the graphics subsystem
Avalon, in the first iteration of the OS. In addition to that, Indigo
and Avalon will also be released as individual components for use on
existing Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 machines. The intent is to
let developers and integrators at least get started with some elements
of the technology, and it's a decision that many partners have
applauded.
