Get a slice of Google for $85 a share
08/19/2004 08:19 AMHaving completed their “Dutch style” share auction, Google have
decided on a price of $85 per share. Revised down from the expected
$135, the change will mean that Google only raise $1.67 Billion,
setting the company value at about $24 Billion. Yahoo, in comparison,
is valued at about $39 Billion.
Google will be offering 19.6 million shares, and will be open for
business on Thursday. The shares will be traded under "
GOOG".
Google's path to "IPO" has been marred with problems, each
taking the glean off what was initially the most awaited IPO in
technology history. Issues like breaching the "silence
period" before selling (‘that’ playboy interview), and illegally
giving shares to its employees, have culminated to bring down the
perceived value of the Google offering. Google’s IPO followed a very
non-standard route, which has annoyed many on Wall Street; reputable
journal ‘The Economist’ wrote last week that if Google does succeed in
its IPO, it could set a trend for other companies going public- to
avoid traditional investment bankers and go it alone – the implication
being that it could cost some businesses a lot of money that they’d
make from managing IPO’s.
That said, Google will still gain an enormous amount of revenue from
the share sale. They have yet to decide (or announce) exactly where
all these funds will be going.

Since
all it takes for an American with insurance to get a CT scan is a
slight fever or a missing Q-tip, it's probably important they have the
fastest, most accurate technology available. Philips' new Brilliance
64-Slice CT Scanner, recently installed at the University of Chicago
Hospitals, has four times the resolution of a typical CT scan,
providing higher quality imaging of the human body. Even better, it's
fast—it can scan your heart or brain in about five seconds and
do a full-body sweep in about 30. That's fast enough that it can be
timed to take snapshots of the human heart between pumps, allowing for
some of the first widely-available high-resolution scans of that organ
without motion blurring.

Who Owns Your Email Address?
05/19/2004 02:53 PMWhile everyone is trying to figure out how to stop spam, a very
interesting legal question is being raised:
who actually owns
your email address? Is it you? Is it whoever owns the domain
name (assuming you don't own your own domain name)? Is it the
internet as a whole? Since many lawsuits involving email seem to rely
on property rights issues, this question may become more important
over time - and it's unclear if there's a really good answer.

Outgoing Email Address Aliasing
Outgoing Email Address Aliasing
02/01/2005 09:08 PMHere's a handy feature idea for an email client: outgoing email
address aliasing. This means that whenever I send an email to
"deane@workemail.com," that address is substituted with
"deane@homeemail.com" as the email is sent.
I have someone who always sends me email at the wrong place. If
I'm at home, he sends it to work. If I'm working, he sends it home.
He tells me that he just replies to where I send the email from. But
it doesn't matter where I send it from, I want all his emails
to be sent to the same account.
Wouldn't it be nice if he could create email address substitution
lists in his email client? He could list all my various email
addresses as aliases of the single address I want all my email to go
to. Then, as his client is sending the email, it substitutes all the
aliases with the correct email address.
Does this seem like something that would provide value? Or am I
way off in left field here?

Google Email? Would You Trade Off Ads
For Better Email Search?
Google Email? Would You Trade Off Ads
For Better Email Search?
01/17/2004 10:47 PMThe big discussion that I've been having with a few different people
over the last few weeks is whether or not Google would get into the
email business - and, if so, how? To me, it seems like an obvious
extension of their technology and business model - but not everyone
agrees. However, the rumors are getting louder and louder that
Google is developing an
email product. The question is whether they'll be offering an
entire "Google Email" system, or if they're just working on a version
of their AdSense offering that would work within email (generating
contextual ads based on the content of the email). Some people I've
spoken to about it thought that people would freak out if they thought
Google was reading their email to do its contextualization magic -
which could be true. The question is how many people will freak out -
and will plenty of others be more than willing to welcome the Google
contextualization engine into their inbox, in exchange for the ability
to actually "Google your email"? Many people always seem to want the
ability to better search through their own email. I could see a
certain willingness from many people to let Google place ads in their
email in exchange for the ability to better search through all the
email. If Google could figure out a good anti-spam solution, as well,
it could be a real hit.
