Science Commons - a new project of Creative Commons that works to encourage sharing of scientific and academic knowledge - has launched an Open Access Law Program. The Program is designed to make legal scholarship "open access," that is freely available online to everyone, without undue copyright and licensing restrictions. The Program involves an Open Access Law Author Pledge, Open Access Law Principles and an Open Access Law Model Publication Agreement. Our very own Chairman & CEO, Lawrence Lessig, is one of the first signatories to the Open Access Law Author Pledge. In addition, 21 important law reviews have adopted the Open Access Principles, or have policies that are consistent with them. Leading journals like such as Michigan Law Review, Animal Law, Harvard Journal of Law & Technology, Indiana Law Journal, Lewis & Clark Law Review, Michigan Law Review, Michigan State Law Review and, New York Law School Law Review, Texas Law Review, Vanderbilt Law Review, and Wayne Law Review and Michigan State Law Review have signed on, as have all of the journals published by Duke Law School and Villanova Law School. More information about the Program is available at the Science Commons Program page. Patent Reform Takes Half A Baby Step In
A Forward-Like Direction

Patent Reform Takes Half A Baby Step In
A Forward-Like Direction
04/19/2004 03:01 AM
Well, I don't know if anyone could actually call it "progress," but at least it sounds like more and more people are beginning to realize that the only people who actually benefit from the current patent system is the lawyers. A conference to discuss these issues seemed to have the typical problems as people realized that (despite simplistic rhetoric) the patent system can both encourage and discourage innovation - and it's important to figure out ways to lessen the "discourage" part. The one bit of (possibly, maybe) good news is a new technology "working group" to look at the issue of technology patent reform. Of course, this pretty much guarantees a lot more red tape, arguments, and very little actual patent reform. If we really reform the patent system within a decade it will be a shocker.

Whoa. People I know are in the Apple Music store. I can pay to download last year's Fray Cafe and the 2001 Fray too (I can buy Lance Arthur and Mena Trott for 99 cents!). The Brad Sucks album is there too (psst: you can download it from his site for free, and it's unencrypted or buy the CD direct from him like I did). I even see a search for "Scott Andrew" is turning a song up from the Fray CD, with hopefully more to come.

Overly-pleasant spam

Overly-pleasant spam 01/09/2004 09:53 PM
Here's an unanticipated effect of spam. Spam showing up in blog comments increasingly tries to pass itself off as a genuine comment. So, I've been getting spams that say how interesting my blog is and how much they care about what I have to say. How touching! Other comment spam disguises itself in the form of some bromide so generic that it can apply to any blog article and so bland that no one will object to it. For example, "Pamela Woodlake" recently spammed an entry on Andrew Odlyzko's comparison of broadband and cell phone adoption rates with the...

Right on Chapel Hill!

Right on Chapel Hill! 03/14/2005 04:48 PM

My hometown makes me proud and activist bloggers played a part From the News and Observer:

CHAPEL HILL -- They swooped in by the busload to the town they said was filled with "dead churches" that "disregard the Bible," hoping to win over some sinners.

"I came here because I love Chapel Hill," said the Rev. Ron Wood, pastor of Celebration Assembly of God on Weaver Dairy Road and a member of the anti-gay-rights group Called 2 Action.

"I'm an ordained minister, too," he added, referring to several speakers at the Town Council meeting Monday who identified themselves as clergy members. "But I'm not one who believes I have the right to disregard the word of God."

Their message was rejected by the majority of Chapel Hillians who met them at Town Hall with signs, T-shirts and buttons proclaiming their support for gay rights.
