TiVo Users Watch More Commercials
TiVo Users Watch More Commercials
05/26/2004 12:20 PMOur LA-based sister-site Defamer has a great write-up about a recent
study that shows people that use a TiVo (or other DVR) may actually be
watching more commercials than those that watch regular TV. The boil
down is this: people...

TiVo Users May See More Commercials...
Sort Of
05/26/2004 02:41 AMThere have been studies in the past that showed that TiVo (or similar
DVR users) often can recall the commercials they've fast forwarded
through. Now, Dave Pell from
Davenetics points us to a new study that actually suggests
DVR
users see more commercials - even though they're just fast
forwarding through them. Basically, the people most likely to have
and use a DVR device are the same people who were likely to simply
channel surf when commercial came on in the past - meaning they saw
very few commercials. Now, however, while they may be fast forwarding
through the commercials, they are still at least "seeing" them - and
possibly getting some brand recognition. In fact, the survey suggests
the net impact of advertising on DVR users may be positive. Of
course, it might help if broadcasters and advertisers continued to
look at more
creative
advertising solutions. As Dave suggests, "The first advertiser
to shoot commercials in slow motion wins."

Tivo as digital hub?
Tivo as digital hub?
02/10/2004 02:47 AMOm Malik
thinks Tivo's
purchase of a startup called Strangeberry signals its intention to
become a hub for digital home entertainment. Makes sense.
Strangeberry is apparently made up of ex-Sun people, and the idea of
universal zero-configuration networking was a big element of Sun
co-founder Bill Joy's Jini vision.
Of course, all the major consumer PC vendors, most notably Gateway,
Sony, and HP, have similar dreams, as do Apple, Microsoft, and your
cable company. This probably makes Tivo interesting acquisiton
bait. But for whom? Tivo is built on Linux, so it probably
isn't a fit for any of the Windows-centric companies. Or for
Apple, which has its own Rendezvous networking technology.

Nielsen Sees Gold In TiVo Users
Nielsen Sees Gold In TiVo Users
03/08/2004 11:04 PMIt looks like TiVo is finally catching on. While Nielsen had planned
to start including data on people using TiVo-like devices in 2006,
they're now
pushing
that deadline up a year, as they've noticed that the TV-watching
public is increasingly signing up for such services (thanks, in part,
to various cable and satellite providers offering them with basic
service). For the extra paranoid, Nielsen says they won't track
things like whether or not people fast forward through commercials,
but only whether or not the show was watched at a different time than
it was originally broadcast. Still, it probably won't be long before
they're tracking commercial skippers as well. So the question is,
once the data on commercial skippers becomes public, what will happen?
Will broadcasters demand changes in the technology (or the law!), or
will they admit that it's time that they, themselves, changed how they
present advertising (or, even, how they fund their operations)?

Report: some Napster users share
passwords to save money
04/09/2005 03:30 AMXeni Jardin:
An article in the Register today reports that it is possible for more
than one person to share a username/password simultaneously on
Napster's digital music service, so they don't have to pay for
separate accounts.
Over the past couple of days MusicAlly has run several tests, during
which we were able to download and stream simultaneously from four
separate computers across two separate Internet connections for good
stretches of time. Our findings so far suggest this situation is the
same whether we use a trial account, a paid-for credit card account or
the £14.95 Napster To Go service. By comparison, several other
Internet subscription services, including Real's Rhapsody, log the
first user out automatically if a second user logs in using the same
username and password.
Arguably the fact that one of the subsequent users could order one of
Napster's paid-for permanent downloads, thus adding a charge to the
original user's card, provides a small disincentive against sharing
usernames and passwords. But Napster requires users to insert their
credit card security number before making a major purchase, such as
the upgrade from the £9.95 service to Napster To Go. What's more, the
credit card numbers themselves are not exposed on the accounts page,
so there's no danger of having your card details ripped off by someone
with whom you're sharing the music service.

GIs in Iraq tote in digital pop culture
-- and share it
04/13/2004 12:53 PMFascinating piece in today's NYT about digital media sharing among
enlisted personnel in Iraq. Would entertainment industry groups -- or
at some point, our government -- prosecute these soldiers for piracy?
At the Kirkush Military Training Base in the eastern Iraqi desert less
than
15 miles from the frontier with Iran, an hour's wait for a helicopter
was spent listening to Marilyn Manson, Eminem and Shania Twain before
the Black Hawk fired up its turbines and somebody back in the
barracks, as if on cue and with a dark sense of irony, cranked up Led
Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven." The songs came from a European
satellite music channel and a communal computer where 12.8 gigabites
of tunes had been downloaded for sharing on MP3's. The rule was
simple: Take some music, add some music. "Any time anybody on the team
gets a new CD, they load it in, so we stay pretty current," said Sgt.
Thomas R. Mena.
As the new CD from Tool blasted in the barracks, Sergeant Mena
scrolled through the computerized music library, which ranged from
Abba and AC/DC, through Limp Biskit and Metallica and on to Van Halen
and ZZ Top. Emigres from West Africa who joined the Army for
citizenship and career training arrived with the latest Nigerian pop
CD's. Chinese-Americans hauled along hot Hong Kong video imports.
