Anti-Spam Legislation Makes Spam More
Malicious
04/29/2004 01:28 PMAren't unintended consequences wonderful? Now that anti-spam
legislation is becoming popular, one result is that spammers aren't
wasting time with just spamming mortgage offers and ways to buy
Viagra. Instead, now that they realize they're definitely on illegal
ground, they're
moving more towards malicious attack spam, including phishing
attacks and trojan horse attacks. In other words, if they're going to
break the law with spam, they figure they might as well go all out.

Report from the spam/anti-spam summit
04/09/2004 04:05 PMDanny O'Brien has written up one of the first summits between spammers
and spam-fighters for the Guardian. It's a great piece.
Surprisingly, no such shootings occur. It's oddly intimate, watching
the spammers and the anti-spammers mill around each other like this.
It feels like a temporary ceasefire in a vicious war that to most of
us seems to be a stalemate...
Over the past year, though, a series of meetings arranged by a trusted
figure in the American anti-spam community, Anne Mitchell, have been
slowly bringing the two sides together. These mini-conferences, held
under the banner of the Institute for Spam and Internet Public Policy,
have mostly been between the highest-ranking ISPs - MSN, AOL - and
commercial email marketers of the most squeaky clean kind. Initially
in secret, these days the meetings are more public.

Spam vs. Anti-Spam: the war escalates!
Spam vs. Anti-Spam: the war escalates!
06/22/2004 02:47 AMEvery time someone introduces a new anti-spam technique, some wily
spammer devises a workaround. This myriad of actions and reactions is
going to tie our e-mail system in knots. The only real solution to
unsolicited mail is to eliminate the problem altogether by stopping
spam at the source. To this end, the folks at ImagineNation have
proposed an eMstamp solution and have set out to publicly answer the
many questions that the proposal has raised. [PRWEB Jun 22, 2004]

Spamming Travel Firm Sues Anti-Spammer
Spamming Travel Firm Sues Anti-Spammer
03/17/2005 03:26 AMHere's yet another case of a company accused of spamming getting
pretty upset when they're called on it. Someone asked a travel
company, named cruise.com, to stop sending him spam. They continued
to send him spam. He threatened to sue them under Oklahoma spam laws,
and featured them on his website. They turned around and
sued him for $4 million for defamation and trademark
infringement. They might have trouble on both those claims. First,
the guy seems to have the spams pretty well documented, including his
repeated attempts to opt-out. It's tough to win a defamation claim
when the facts alleged are true. Second, the trademark infringement
concerns the use of their logo on his website about them -- but, as
has been explained numerous times, trademark law is only to protect
against confusion, not to give full rights to the trademark. It's
quite unlikely that anyone going to this guy's website about how the
company was spamming him would confuse the site as one officially
sanctioned by the spamming company.

Cool Voice of America censor-buster
b0rked by idiotic anti-pr0n measure
05/03/2004 11:00 AMThe US International Broadcasting Bureau (Voice of America,
basically), created a proxy service to allow Chinese, Iranians and
other oppressed people to circumvent their national firewalls,
relaying forbidden pages behind the silicon curtains. However, the IBB
decided to kowtow to unknown bluenoses and install a filter that would
block foreigners from gaining access to pr0n: to do this, they came up
with the bright idea of blocking any URL that contained naughty words.
This is a stupid, stupid idea:
IBB's list includes "ass" (which inadvertently bans
usembassy.state.gov), "breast" (breastcancer.com), "hot" (hotmail.com
and hotels.com), "pic" (epic.noaa.gov) and "teen"
(teens.drugabuse.gov).

Anti-Virus Firm Admits MyDoom Impact
Exaggerated
02/10/2004 02:41 AMLast week we noted that anti-virus companies were putting out press
releases including
ridicul
ously high estimates for the amount of "damages" done by the
myDoom virus - and refusing to give any info to back up the claims.
Now, however, in a surprising move, another anti-virus firm, TruSecure
is admitting that many exaggerated the impact of the virus, which
they say really wasn't that big of a deal. They still say that the
virus did plenty of damage, but suggest that the reactions from many
overstated how much damage was really done.
