Wrath of an angry dog

Wrath of an angry dog 03/06/2004 01:55 AM

HoneyBear, the conehead

Who cares about the wrath of an aloof, mysterious, erratic and possibly fictitious god when you have 60kg of angry dog in your living room? Honeybear today endured a trip to the vet, a bath, trimming of matts, an ear cleaning, ointment and pills and, the final insult, a cone. He has been giving me baleful looks all afternoon and I'm just embracing the guilt. I even went out and bought some fatty pork to fry up and add to his kibble tonight. I'm hoping that meat may soothe some of the hurt feelings he has after I couldn't help but laugh as I watched him try to navigate around the house and bump into things. It was adorable in a difficult to admit to sort of way. :) Yes, I'm whipped and desperate to appease an angry Dog.

He has had an irritated patch of skin on his left front paw for a few months that looks icky because he licks it, but aside from the purple fur from the saliva it doesn't do much. Over the weekend he developed a very aggressive growth between two of his toes on his right front paw that prompted the visit to the vet. He is almost 13 years old, which for a saint is positively ancient, so I was expecting the worst but the vet thinks that a course of antibiotics, a corticosteroid creme and the cone to keep him from slurping it constantly will be effective since it may be an allergic reaction to something aggravated by his diligent applications of saliva. If not, we'll have to have a biopsy and see what to do then. So...here's hoping the old geezer gets well soon and doesn't extort me for a thick, juicy steak every night until he sleeps the long sleep. :)

FCC Blocks Spam on Wireless Devices

FCC Blocks Spam on Wireless Devices 08/05/2004 02:31 PM
The FCC wants to stop spam from reaching your PDA and/or cell phone. It's a step in the right direction and much appreciated, but may not protect cell phones and PDAs from forwarded spam emails.

The Federal Communications Commission yesterday moved to prevent cell phones and personal digital assistants (PDAs) from becoming the next major frontier for e-mail spam.

The agency issued rules requiring marketers to have explicit permission from wireless-device users before they can be sent any commercial e-mail. And it urged the industry to develop technologies to prevent spam from overwhelming wireless devices the way it has swamped computer messaging.

"By prohibiting all commercial messages to wireless phones and PDAs absent affirmative consent from the consumer, Americans can now use their wireless devices freely, without being bothered by unwanted and annoying messages," FCC Chairman Michael K. Powell said in a prepared statement.

The rule covers a rapidly expanding array of Web-based e-mail services offered by wireless providers that enable customers to send and read messages via their phones or PDAs.

Finance Spam Passing Drug Spam While
Porn Spam Is Washed Up
05/24/2004 05:37 PM
The latest study on spam trends appears to show that financial spam is outpacing pharmaceutical spam - though, honestly, so much of both is coming out that it's really hard to imagine that this matters at all. Meanwhile, it seems that porn spam is increasingly less interesting to spammers as the numbers have been on a noticeable decline for quite some time. No matter what, though, it appears that CAN-SPAM has done absolutely nothing to slow down the amount of spam sent.

That is the point at which the spam droplets form a continuous stream. And that is the point at which no interval of my life will ever be spam-free again....

ADL Draws A Map For Geolibraries
http: //www.dlib.org/dlib/may04/goodchild/05goodchild.html

Launched in 1994, the Alexandria Digital Library Project has fundamentally changed the way libraries deal with the problems inherent in cataloging maps. First, map collections are specialized, and not every library can afford a large one. Second, maps, images and globes present unique storage and preservation challenges. And third, they are notoriously difficult to catalog in the traditional author/title/subject paradigm of classification. The most obvious basis for search and retrieval of maps and related objects is geographic coverage: a user is typically looking for a map of somewhere. But geographic space is continuous rather than discrete, and an assortment of methods are used for defining geographic location, including coordinates (latitude and longitude), place names, and various indexing schemes. The ADL Project solved these problems by automating both the catalog and the content of the map library, enabling users to access the library remotely and the library to leverage its investment by extending access globally. Digital storage also resolved issues of preservation and the management of physical media; and the automated catalog was capable of finding information by geographic location. The concepts pioneered by ADL were later adopted in numerous other projects. The geolibrary, for example, can only exist in a digital world. Therefore, it remains one of the most powerful concepts to have come out of digital library research.

Wi-Fi Draws Tenants in Detroit

Wi-Fi Draws Tenants in Detroit 01/19/2004 01:59 PM
An apartment complex in Detroit that draws executives from nearby auto makers has Wi-Fi throughout: Residents who rent furnished apartments--apparently many of them do--get the Internet access for free. The owner of the complex calls Wi-Fi a "deal clincher" for many potential residents. It seems as though the network administrator authorizes users on the network by their MAC addresses. A service provider is also targeting apartment buildings in Washington, D.C. For new or old construction, Wi-Fi offers a much easier way for building owners to offer Internet access than stringing cable throughout the building....
