This visual music search engine lets you type in the name of an artist and it displays related artists. I thought I'd stump it by entering "Robert Crumb" (the cartoonist, who used to play tenor banjo in one of my favorite bands, The Cheap Suit Serenaders). I'll be damned if Music Plasma didn't display my very favorite musicians right next to his name. Link (Thanks, Anthony!)

OS X
06/30/2004 05:33 PM
Groxis Inc. announced on Wednesday that Grokker 2.1, the company's visual search tool, is now compatible with Mac OS X. The software was previously available as a Beta release for the operating system. Grokker uses its four plug-ins -- The Web (covering the AltaVista, MSN, WiseNut, Yahoo! and Teoma search engines), Amazon.com, Google and My Files -- to produce visual maps of the data you're looking for, whether it's on the Internet or on your hard drive. It features a fully functional Web browser and allows you to build, edit and save visual maps containing up to 2,000 items in each. Version 2.1 builds maps faster, adds the Google plug-in, highlights query keywords in different colors and more. It requires Mac OS X v10.2.2, a G3 processor, 256MB RAM, 20MB free hard drive space, Java 1.4.1 and Safari 1.0. A 30-day trial is available from the Groxis Web site, and a license is US$49.

Visual timeline of Bush's Air National
Guard service
09/09/2004 01:04 PM
Mark Frauenfelder: President Bush had a lot of fun as a pilot in the Air National Guard. He got to fly really cool jets, while maintaining the lifestyle of a rich playboy with plenty of upst airs connections that allowed him to ignore direct orders from his commander and come and go as he pleased. And now, the President has a team of folks dedicated to smearing Kerry for volunteering for hazardous duty in Vietnam. And it's working! Most people now believe Bush is a military hero while Kerry is a shirking, wobbly liar. The president is a lot smarter than I thought.

Simon sez: "I put together this visual explanation of Dubya's Air National Guard service (or lack thereof) based entirely on the released documents to date. My goal was to put the confusing mixture of events and records into some kind of order." Link

A MusicPlasma for bl0gs

A MusicPlasma for bl0gs 01/05/2005 03:58 PM
Mark Frauenfelder: John Battelle is proposing a MusicPlasma for blogs, that is, a graphical way to map out the blogosphere by grouping related blogs. He's already got people interested in the idea.
Then I thought of MusicPlasma. The thing I like about it is how intuitive it is - put in the name of a band you like, and you find more that you might like but had never heard of.

Hey, I thought, what if we did that with blogs, and instead of Amazon data, we used Technorati cosmos data, or Feedster data, or Findory, or Bloglines, or some combination of all of that plus more?

A problem that afflicts me (and I've noticed many of my brethren) is the need to create a program to solve a task when there are already many perfectly suitable programs on the market for free or for very little cash. The standard justification in my mind is that there isn't a program that does things the exact way I want them to. Now realistically, I tend to pick on programs that are within reach. After all, even if Word didn't suit my needs, I have no intention of writing my own word processing program from scratch. (Although at times, I keep thinking I could build a better version of Outlook ... yet I digress).

MTV music service 11/06/2003 09:59 AM
Viacom, the parent company of MTV seems poised to enter the online music service fray. A CNET article reports that the media giant has confirmed that it is "looking into launching a music download service in the first half of next year." The announced service follows a move by the beverage giant last week to sponsor the Top of the Pops, and may be an attempt to preempt the 100 million song promotional deal between Apple's iTunes Music Store and Pepsi. It is still unclear whether Coke's...

Microsoft will launch a music download service some time in 2004 to compete with Napster and market leader iTunes Music Store. Sources close to Microsoft have confirmed that the company has been in talks with the major record labels in order to secure licensing, and a Microsoft spokesperson has confirmed that the MSN website will feature a music service in 2004. Antitrust concerns are already being raised, as it has been indicated that Microsoft may be able to undercut the per-song price...

service
12/06/2003 04:30 PM
Microsoft Corp. will run into fierce competition when it launches its online music service through MSN next year, but some industry experts think the company may have timed its entrance into the market just right.

Microsoft is mum on the details surrounding the forthcoming service and officials at MSN, the Redmond software company's Internet portal, declined to comment. Microsoft appears to be a latecomer. Apple Computer Inc. launched its iTunes service in late April, and more than 17 million songs have been downloaded by owners of the iPod, a portable digital music player.
