Security Update 2005-006 Released -- Apple released Security Update 2005-006 last week, fixing the usual miscellany of possible security holes in services such as the AFP Server, Bluetooth, CoreGraphics, folder permissions, launchd, LaunchServices, MCX Client, NFS, PHP, and the VPN server. All of the holes apply to Mac OS 10.4 Tiger (both client and server versions), but only the Bluetooth and PHP fixes are relevant for those still running Panther, and the VPN fix was already rolled into Mac OS 10.3.9 by a previous security update. For full details, see Apple's description; the download ranges from 3.9 MB to 6.4 MB, depending on the version you need and whether you get it via Software Update or as a stand-alone download. A security update has been released for iChat which patches a rather serious vulnerability.

"A remote iChat participant can send a "link" that references a program on the local system. If the "link" is activated by clicking on it, and the "link" points to a local program, then the program will run. iChat has been modified so that "links" of this type will open a Finder window that displays the program instead of running it."

Mozilla.org update

Mozilla.org update 08/31/2004 07:15 PM
Mozilla.org, homepage of the popular Firefox browser, Mozilla Suite, and Thunderbird, has under-gone a radical new update. The new sites has a revised layout, with a greater emphasis on promotion of it's 3 core products. The new website, code-named Cavendish, was developed by Steven Garrity and his design company, silverorange.

Described by Ben Goodger, chief Firefox developer as "our best site yet", the group hopes that this, combined with a PR / Marketing drive will help propel the 1.0 release of Firefox sky high. So far, browser statistics show that recent media attention and coverage of Firefox has increased it's share of the market, on a variety of measures.

The new design has yet to filter down to the many minor pages on Mozilla.org; this is expected in the coming days.
