from the annual WiFi shootout (an event at
Defcon that seeks to determine just how far an 802.11 WLAN range can
extend). And here are the winners, according to event organizer Dave:
3 teenagers from Ohio used Orinoco Gold 30 milliwatt USB
adapters mounted on the feedpoints of two 10 foot dishes, and shot
55.1 miles.
Yes, that's fifty-five point one miles! This is a new world's record
for an unamplified shot! Complete details will be in a press release,
which should come out in the next few days.

I was a technical advisor for a Japanese movie
called "The Negotiator" which will be opening here on May 7th.
They recently did a press conference with the key stars including
Prime Minister Koizumi's son who plays one of the cyber-police. They
showed the laptops sporting
the stickers that everyone sent me. Thanks again! The title of one
of the stories about the press conference is, "The Negotiator Mashita, dancing with DEFCON?" The text is in
Japanese, but there are some pictures of the actors and the laptops on
display.

on Thursday, people were already gathering a few miles away for
DEFCON, the older sibling in this family of security conferences. Not
only are both shows put on by the same people, some of the speakers
and many of the attendees do both shows as well. DEFCON is the larger
of the two, probably twice the size of the Blackhat Briefings. There
are other differences: It's less formal, less organized, and it has a
lot more 'tude.

One of the security assumptions in Bluetooth is that attackers need to
be quite close-by if they want to gain access to your phone or other
device. Here's simple instructions for building a handsome, effective
Bluetooth "sniper rifle" whose high-gain antenna will give you access
to devices from miles away.
After a few seconds, John pointed the gun at the Library Tower / US
Bank Building, which is the tallest building in Los Angeles. The
building was .75 miles (a little over 1 km) from our position.
As more Bluetooth devices started appearing, John said, "This building
is full of Bluetooth! Look we got some Blackberries!" He also
explained that, with multiple guns, it would be possible to track a
single Bluetooth device as the person walked around. In less than a
few minutes, twenty devices were detected—all at distances over a
half mile away! We decided to quickly conclude the scan, given police
activity in the area earlier in the day from a bomb scare.

A friend of mine from the Shmoo hacker group told me about this
amazing DefCon stunt back in June and swore me to secrecy, and it's
been one of the hardest secrets I've ever kept, because this is so
goddamned cool.
The Sniper Yagi is an M16 with the firing apparatus removed and
replaced with a directional high-powered antenna. Use the sniper stand
and sight to line up your WiFi shot, plug in, and let the packets
begin!

This is probably
phony, but it seems like something that might actually be used: The ID
SNIPER rifle implants "a GPS-microchip in the body of a human being,
using a high powered sniper rifle as the long distance injector. The
microchip will enter the body and stay there, causing no internal
damage, and only a very small amount of physical pain to the target.
It will feel like a mosquito-bite lasting a fraction of a second. At
the same time a digital camcorder with a zoom-lense fitted within the
scope will take a high-resolution picture of the target. This picture
will be stored on a memory card for later image-analysis."
