Electoral Vote Syndication

Electoral Vote Syndication 08/03/2004 02:35 PM
Over the weekend, and in between events at the IETF, I got into a dialogue with “the Votemaster,” who runs the Electoral Vote Predictor 2004. I find the Predictor unequaled as a daily read-out on the state of the Bush-Kerry contest. I suggested by email that the page could use a feed, and he wrote back “Say what?” and I explained and he hacked and debugged, and now, here it is. He says it’s a beta, but it works fine in all the readers I try and also validates, so what’s not to like?

Skippy sez, "I just received a note from MoveOn.org about their effort to help the Verified Voting Foundation monitor electronic voting this year:"
The non-partisan Verified Voting Foundation is working with other voter protection groups to make sure every vote is counted, focusing its efforts on the new electronic voting terminals we're all concerned about.

Their program is called TechWatch, and it will help reduce the risk that votes will be lost or miscounted by these machines and other technology.

DeltaGraph 5.5 publishes graphs, charts

07/21/2004 07:19 AM
Red Rock Software has released a free update to its data analysis, charting and graphing software, DeltaGraph 5.5. The upgrade adds the ability to publish charts and graphs on a Web site and update them as new data is received. DeltaGraph 5.5 automates the entire process with an AppleScript that extracts data from any database with the ability to export delimited text files, creates charts or graphs and posts them to the Web in a user-specified format. When the data changes, the user runs the AppleScript again. The software requires Mac OS X v10.1.5 or higher, 128MB RAM and 60MB hard drive space, with pricing for the full version at US$199 for academic use and $299 for commercial use.

Zephyr Teachout, one of my very favorite faves from the Dean campaign, is heading up the oddly-named Baobabs College Labs Project, funded by Mitch Kapor and Freada Kapor Klein, intended to get out the college vote. From the press release: The campaign is targeting a dozen universities in swing states such as Ohio, New Mexico, Arizona, and Pennsylvania. Selected progressive student organizers on these campuses are given stipends, support, and online community building tools developed on the Howard Dean campaign. ...The effort hopes to spread online beyond the initial schools using such web tools as Civic Space, formerly "Dean Space,"...

Generating Perl graphs with GD::Graph

Generating Perl graphs with GD::Graph 04/13/2004 11:22 AM
Perl's GD::Graph module is a tool that allows a software developer to quickly and easily generate graphical representations of data. Originally written by Martien Verbruggen in 1995, the package has matured into a very flexible and popular tool. It is ideally suited to any situation where a dynamic data set, from a database or elsewhere, needs to be fetched and represented on the fly. It is widely used in corporate intranets, where many a webmaster has used it to generate graphs that show data in exactly the format management likes.
