Punk at a Moment's Notice 08/04/2004 04:43 AM

Borrowing from the flash mob trend, punk rock bands lean on the Web, cell phones and instant messaging to organize impromptu gigs. Robert Andrews reports from Cardiff, Wales.

Punk rock in the holy land

Punk rock in the holy land 04/13/2005 01:36 AM
Xeni Jardin: Jessica Smith from FRONTLINE says:
In Israel, a vibrant punk scene has emerged in a society torn apart by the conflict between Israelis and Palestinians. In four candid video interviews, FRONTLINE/World reporter and filmmaker Liz Nord talks to the musicians driving the movement. Like other young Israelis, the punk rockers have been affected personally by the conflict. They have fought as soldiers and lost friends and fans killed by suicide bombers. Bands from both ends of the political spectrum use their music to comment on Israeli society. Others make music just to have fun. But all of them agree that punk rock represents freedom.

The first four chapters from the movie were also released individually as music videos.

Afro-Punk offices burned, donations
sought
09/19/2004 02:08 PM
Xeni Jardin: The makers of a groundbreaking documentary film exploring racial identity within the punk scene -- Afro-Punk: the "rock n roll nigger" experience -- were hit with an unexpected disaster last week. Friends are reaching out to coordinate donations of space and gear to help the filmmakers get back on track. From an e-mail sent to friends and supporters:
On Monday Sept. 13th at around 2pm the building that houses the afro-punk offices was set on fire. Apparently, the first floor failing clothing store owner, in an act of desperation, set a phone book on fire and took a little walk. Meanwhile Afro-Punk's director James Spooner was two flights up discussing his upcoming panel on music as a tool for black liberation with a colleague. "We heard the bell ringing and a lot of screaming and yelling" says James. The guilty store owner, alerted James and his friend of the blaze below. Thinking quickly James ran back into the office unplugged his Mac tower, which houses the documentary and hobbled down the stairs through the smoke and flames . "Man, maybe it was stupid, but this film has effected too many people for it to all end here, let the rest burn, I had to save it!"

Luckily fire fighters acted quickly on the scene and were able to stabilize the fire. Flames never reached our office but the NYFD destroyed the place trying to make sure the fire wasn't in the walls or ceiling.

After the smoke literally cleared they were allowed back up to access the damage. All in all it could have been worse. The Afro-Punk computers and camera are still working, the 200 hours of footage afro-punk was cut from seems to be okay and the work for our next film is safe. We did lose some furniture, a monitor and some vcrs from our dubbing station, but most tragic, we lost our donated office space.

Link to the Afro-Punk website, link to paypal donation site, and e-mail the group for a list of non-cash donations they're seeking -- including office space, office supplies, and electronic equipment (VCRs, monitors, CD-Rs, DVD-Rs, and the like). (via pho list and Bob Davis of Soul Patrol)

Boing Boing pal Joey "Accordion Guy" deVilla says, "I'll see your punk cover band genre and raise you an alt-rock mash-up cover band. Smash-Up Derby are a cover band, but their covers are in the form of live-mash-ups. Check out the MP3s posted on their site, such as Smells Like Billie Jean, where Nirvana and Michael Jackson collide -- they're quite good!" Link

Tim Binder says, "This is for your Punk Cover Bands listing, which seems to be rapidly expanding to list unusual cover bands of any sort. The Beach Balls are a Philadelphia cover band that does 80s songs in an operatic/folk style. The link is to a site that has two of their cover songs, Back In Black (more AC/DC) and Girls on Film. When I first saw them live, I was just stunned when I realized that the song I was hearing at the time was The Car's My Best Friend's Girlfriend." Link

Amardeep Singh says,

My favorite punk cover band was Schlong. Their one full-length LP was a drunk-punk version of "West Side Story" called "Punk Side Story," complete with fighting sound effects, snippets of dialogue, and pictures of drunk-looking bay area punk rockers looking at the moon. They match the soundtrack of "West Side Story" track for track. They don't have a webpage, but you can find reference to them here .
And Bruce Heersen says, "Here's yet another AC/DC cover band: Hayseed Dixie (link). On their debut album A Hillbilly Tribute to AC/DC, they do AC/DC covers bluegrass-style. They have at least one more album that is covers of other rock bands. I've seen these guys live, and they are pretty unbelievable. Really entertaining."

Check out this awesome video for Hayseed Dixie's cover of Mötorhead's punk/metal anthem "Ace of Spades," edited entirely on a PowerMac G4 laptop. Link (screenshot shown at top of this post).

Lemmy's inbred cousins would be proud.

To which BB reader Dario Manzoni sez:

About the bluegrass covers: there is Iron Horse's "Fade to Bluegrass: The Bluegrass Tribute To Metallica" (Link to samples). I think they did a nice job capturing Metallica's peculiar sound. And absolutely worth mentioning (but different kind) are Apocalyptica, that once released "Plays Metallica by four cellos" (link to full album at low bitrate for sampling purpose)

Swedish Gang Members Punk Nurses Via

Swedish Gang Members Punk Nurses Via
Cameraphone
09/21/2004 03:02 PM

The gritty streets of Sweden are littered with the burnt and twisted carcasses of their many gang members, toppled bun carts, and half-expended tubs of peroxide paste - and now the violence is spreading to the hospitals, or so they would have us believe. Word is that youth who think they need prioritized health care are sending cameraphone picture threats to medical staff. As if nearly-free health care wasn't enough, now they've got to go and get all pissy because they aren't first in line. They ought to come over here and get stabbed - then we can see how much they like waiting in line, filling out the forms to claim you're a one-legged Hasid lesbian.

Also, this particular internet person pictured may not actually be a real Swede gang member, but that's not what Google thinks.

Notice Anything Different?

Notice Anything Different? 01/25/2003 11:53 PM

If this isn't your first trip to my website, you've no doubt noticed some changes. For a few days now I've been quiet and haven't posted to the site at all. That is because I was making the changes you see. And there are many changes, in fact. First, and most obviously, the visual appearance of the site is totally different. The old design was too bland; I myself grew bored with it. Second, and perhaps the biggest technical change, I no longer use pMachine as the backend for the site. pMachine is wonderful, and I highly recommend it to anyone seeking a CMS. However, the new system, which I wrote from scratch with PHP, mySql, and some Apache settings, addresses many of the reasons I did not want to keep pMachine:

  • Size: pMachine is very big, which is not necessarily a bad thing, but it is big because of the sheer number of features it has, almost all of which I did not use. My new system is very small, both in file size and database utilization, and does what I need it to do. And adding features will not be too difficult.
  • Ease of Use: I mean this from a user's point of view, not mine. With pMachine, the process of linking to one of my entries was not as semantically logical as I would have liked. For instance, a permanent link to a previous entry may have looked like this, http://www.readinged.com/index.php?id=P30, while in the new system, permanent links look like this, http://www.readinged.com/blog/30/. Similarly, the URL's for archive pages and RSS feeds are much more clear.
  • Impersonal: Let me again repeat that I do like pMachine, and it is a good system, but I never felt too attached to it. I like to write my own systems. pMachine was initially intended to get this site going quickly and then to write my own blogging system.

I will write more on my new blogging system in the coming days, and I plan to release it to download when I complete it. I still need to write a good administration interface for it, implement a categories system, and I plan on beefing up its RSS capabilities. You will be able to get an RSS feed for almost any criteria (i.e. posts between specific dates, posts about a certain topic, and searches returned as RSS).

Also new in this design is a dynamic commenting system. Go ahead and click on the comments link after any post, and you should see what I mean. This is a system I developed for Stonefishspine, and have wanted to use on my own site ever since. This new design enables me to do so, and the commenting system works any almost all current browsers. As of right now, older browsers without sufficient support of the Javascript DOM will not be able to post comments. I am working on the non-dynamic version of this system and it should be ready within a few days. Currently, I know that versions of Opera older than 7Beta and some versions of Internet Explorer for the Macintosh will not be able to post comments.

I'd really like to hear any comments (good or bad) about the redesigned site. You can email me at ed@readinged.com. Watch in the next few days for additional information about the new site design.

Update (4:00pm): I would like to mention that even with this new design, your old permalinks will still work. Also, if you are using an RSS aggregator that pulled my old RSS file, it will still work as well. But please see if you can get it changed to the new URL as I will remove support for the old one eventually.

I have to agree with Jim on the current weather in the US. When I left for classes this morning it was seven degrees outside (and much less with the wind chill). There should be a law against that kind of cold.

Will Anyone Notice Netscape's Return?

Will Anyone Notice Netscape's Return? 05/27/2004 11:04 AM
While most people had written off the Netscape browser, assuming that AOL had all but left it for dead when they spun off Mozilla, it turns out that AOL really is planning to release a new version of the browser, which basically has everyone asking: but why? Mozilla, on its own, seems to be getting some traction, and Netscape will still be based on Mozilla. Meanwhile Opera is still innovating in the browser space and the Mac folks still seem to like Safari. At the same time, most of the known universe is still stuck on IE and don't see any reason to change (despite there being plenty of good reasons). So, the question is where does Netscape fit into this space, and what does AOL hope to get out of it? No one expects AOL to add any significant features to Mozilla, and the average AOL user is still stuck on AOL's own browser (which is still based on IE). About the only reason anyone can come up with for this release is that there are still some folks using older Netscape technology, and therefore AOL decided to refresh it. Perhaps that defines AOL's strategy these days: "Let's just kind of stick with what we have and refresh it periodically and hope that no one realizes there's a lot of other stuff out there." No wonder users are bailing out by the hundreds of thousands.

If people don't notice it, it's not
architecture...
11/15/2003 07:42 AM

I've just caught up on my Dre amspaces and been confronted with a conundrum. In a piece about brutalist architecture, they featured the Tricorn centre in Portsmouth. Here's a picture of the building in question:

Now, this building hasn't had the most illustrious of histories. It was built in 1966, given an award in 1967 and voted Britain's fourth ugliest building in 1968. It is generally reviled by the public and will not be protected by government by being listed. But when the architect - Rodney Gordon - is asked about the general distaste towards his building, he replies:

"Well I'm very surprised. A lot of people liked the building. One thing I do find is that any piece of architecture worth being called architecture is usually both hated and loved. If people don't notice it, it's not architecture."

That last phrase seems extraordinary to me - stunning in its arrogance and audacity and completely in opposition to most of the understandings of design and architecture that I've accumulated over the last ten years. That kind of ostentatious statement of impact above function was given up within the first ten years of web design. What Gordon is talking about is the construction of follies - buildings with little or no function but to inspire and awe. Unworkable spaces, unusable spaces. We have them on the web too - sometimes even intentionally - either as art or design showcases or as image-based impactful press prelease or advertising spaces. But this is different. This is a site - a space - designed for shopping and socialising that wants desperately to be innovative and impressive - the architect all the while dismissing the subtle and less overt arts of flows and usability, building things that are not scaled for humans or comprehensible to them. All the things that allow a place to be understood by people are dismissed as unworthy of the name of architecture. And why - because the building must be noticed... It's stunning. It's terrible. And I'm fairly sure it's wrong.

If you're interested in the Tricorn:
