Yahoo's Offers New Anti-Spyware Tool...
That Actually Finds Spyware
08/05/2004 03:50 AM
It appears that Yahoo heard the backlash loud and clear a few months back when they released an anti-spyware tool that just so happened to skip over adware from Yahoo partners. The latest version, built on PestPatrol's technology will now default to notifying users of both "spyware" and what they consider to be "adware" and then give the user the choice of what to do. I haven't tested the product yet, but it sounds like they're moving in the right direction. It still makes you wonder what they were thinking in offering a purposely crippled offering. People know what spyware is, and telling them that spyware isn't spyware doesn't change how people feel about it. It also doesn't make them look kindly back at the company that provided them with the bogus anti-spyware tool in the first place.

Battling for bio art

Battling for bio art 07/09/2004 01:47 PM
The drama continues in the case of University at Buffalo professor Steve Kurtz, a member of the Critical Art Ensemble. Kurtz has been under investigation since May when police--who Kurtz called to his home after he awoke to find his wife dead of a heart attack--discovered biological materials used in the respected artist's work. (More background here.) Yesterday, Kurtz was charged with four counts of mail and wire fraud with a maximum prison sentence of 20 years each. Professor Robert Ferrell, chair of the Department of Human Genetics at the University of Pittsburgh's School of Public Health, was also indicted for helping Kurtz obtain a bit of harmless bacteria.
"I am absolutely astonished," said Donald A. Henderson, Dean Emeritus of the Johns Hopkins University School of Hygiene and Public Health and resident scholar at the Center for Biosecurity of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Henderson was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Bush for his work in heading up the World Health Organization smallpox eradication program and was appointed by the Bush administration to chair the National Advisory Council on Public Preparedness.

"Based on what I have read and understand, Professor Kurtz has been working with totally innocuous organisms... to discuss something of the risks and threats of biological weapons--more power to him, as those of us in this field are likewise concerned about their potential use and the threat of bio-terrorism." Henderson noted that the organisms involved in this case--Serratia marcescens and Bacillus atrophaeus--do not appear on lists of substances that could be used in biological terrorism.

AOL Offers Spyware Stopper... Just After
They Started Offering Spyware
04/22/2004 02:36 AM
Just a few weeks after saying that they're going to start bundling spyware/adware with their instant messenger product, AOL announces their latest anti-spyware application. While we've been complaining about anti-spyware from ISPs that just points out the spyware, AOL claims that this version will disable (though not delete) the spyware. I wonder if it will catch the spyware that AOL installs themselves.

Yahoo's Famed Anti-Spyware App Allows

Yahoo's Famed Anti-Spyware App Allows
Spyware From Partners
06/02/2004 10:10 AM
We didn't write about Yahoo's new "anti-spyware" toolbar that they announced last week, because it seemed to receive plenty of hype, and there were no real reviews of how it worked. There are so many so-called anti-spyware applications out there that don't actually stop spyware and adware for fear of upsetting marketing companies or out of worries that actually stopping spyware may make some applications stop working (upsetting the user), that we figured Yahoo's anti-spyware app (hype and all) probably wouldn't be much to bother with. It certainly looks like that may be the case. eWeek is now reporting that Yahoo tries to dance the careful dance of not upsetting certain companies who threate n to sue people who call their application spyware. Of course, the situation is even more complex because Claria (who you probably know as Gator - despite their attempt to change their name to shake that spyware label) is also a partner of Yahoo. So, it's really not surprising that the default setting for Yahoo's anti-spyware app won't actually remove services like Gator or WhenU. Instead, Yahoo's spyware remover claims these programs are "adware" and will only remove them if you click and extra check box each time you run the program. In other words, once again, you can't trust a provider of anti-spyware software, because they're playing both sides of the fence: partnering with providers on the one hand, and then offering weak removal products on the other. If Yahoo were serious about removing spyware from the computers of users they would refuse to partner with companies that used surreptitious tactics to be installed on computers. Instead, they want to look good to users in the front, while letting in spyware/adware from partners through the backdoor.

Battling the antibodies

Battling the antibodies 12/31/2004 12:33 PM
I checked out a stack of library books for my vacation week, but the only one that really grabbed me was David Bornstein's How to Change the World: Social Entrepeneurs and the Power of New Ideas. (You can also catch his Pop!Tech lecture on ITConversat ions.) The book revolves around the inspirational Bill Drayton. Drayton is an architect of change, and this passage from the book writes his job description:
In his book, Leading Change: The Argument for Values-Based Leadership, James O'Toole, an expert in management and leadership, observes that great thinkers throughout the world agree that "groups resist change with all the vigor of antibodies attacking an intruding virus." O'Toole examines a number of cases in which a potentially beneficial institutional change was resisted and finds that the resistance occurs when a group perceives that a change in question will challenge its "power, prestige, and satisfaction with who they are, what they believe, and what they cherish." He asserts: "The major factor in our resistance to change is the desire not to have the will of others forced on us."

If ideas are to take root and spread, therefore, they need champions -- obsessive people who have the skill, motivation, energy, and bullheadedness to do whatever is necessary to move them forward: to persuade, inspire, seduce, cajole, enlighten, touch hearts, alleviate fears, shift perceptions, articulate meanings, and artfully maneuver them through systems.

Jimmy Wales on battling wiki spam

Jimmy Wales on battling wiki spam 07/28/2004 10:13 PM

Jimmy Wales of Wikipedia was interviewed recently by the Slashdot community. One of the questions regarded protecting Wikis from spammers:

Sure, I think it's pretty simple to solve problems like that. One of the first tricks I would try is to parse the wiki text that someone inputs to see if it contains an external link. If so, then only in those cases, require an answer to a captcha.

Second step, keep editing wide open for everyone, but restrict the ability to post external links to people who are trusted by that community. Make it really easy for trusted users to extend the zone of trust, because you want to encourage participation.

Basically what I think works in a wikis is to trust people to do the right thing, and trust them as much as you can possibly stand it, until it hurts your head and makes you scared for what they're going to break. Because that is what works.

People are not fundamentally bad. It only takes the smallest of correctives to take care of that tiny minority that wants to disrupt the community.

I'm glad to say that so far the css-discus s wiki spam problem has been effectively tackled by a hard working group of dedicated spam fighters. Helping out is as easy as signing up for the recent changes RSS feed.

The topic of RSS has been hot lately. I began to develop this current web page with all of the RSS features about a month ago, and I was really motivated by how the RSS-reading/developing community embraces the standard. I offer a web-based solution to reading RSS feeds. AmphetaDesk is a multi-platform application to do a similar task. Released today is new version 0.93.1. I've made a new purchase. For those of you who do not want to click the link, I bought a Toshiba e740 Pocket PC 2002 device. It is my first PDA. I would greatly appreciate any feedback on the platform, especially on the availability of free software. Also, I have downloaded the SDK and eMbedded Visual C++/VB for the platform, so I would appreciate some help on that too. I have found scarce resources so far on developing for the platform, but I will continue my search tomorrow, with the help of my good friend Google.

Roaming is Hot Topic of the Day

Roaming is Hot Topic of the Day 12/05/2003 01:54 PM
">Roaming is a key requirement for Wi-Fi to take off but this writer is clueless: She seems to think that Intel's Centrino marketing program has something to do with roaming when really it's just an advertising push. The focus of this story is on technical challenges to roaming but she's missing the main issue. The technical challenges are small compared to the need for service providers to make agreements with each other so that a subscription to one service lets users access virtually any available hot spot. With those deals in place, more customers are likely to sign up for susbscriptions. She also includes some shameless promotion of a company that does business with her publisher. She cites Zinio as a "chief" player in marketing value-added Wi-Fi services. It looks to me like Zinio reformats magazines so that they look nice on handheld devices. What on earth does that have to do with roaming?? What a poor example of journalism....
