2004 is going on in Japan until Friday, and there are plenty of new
product demonstrations as well as those currently in development on
display. This year's hot sheet includes NTT DoCoMo's "UbiButton," a
device similar in form factor to a wristwatch. By detecting the shock
waves in the arm created by a simple snapping of the fingers, a switch
is flipped that can, for example, turn a light on and off. In other
words, DoCoMo has glorified The Clapper to now be called The Snapper.
Actually, I know a couple people that can't snap their fingers...what
the hell are they supposed to do? [Uhm, clap? - ed] Other
highlights from the convention included a working model of a Bluetooth
pen, and DDI Pocket's "Jacketphone," a SD card sized PHS module.

Amazon
has a pre-order page for Apple's next revision of OS X, 10.4, or
'Tiger.' While there's no release date, the $35 mail-in rebate shows a
'postmark by' date of May 31st, so I would expect it to arrive
reasonable soon before then. There have been rumors that Tiger would
be release on April 1st, but who knows.
If you're a Mac user, there's much to recommend Tiger, from the
previews, including system-wide search indexing and upgraded versions
of many of the bundled programs. Historically, I've found the OS X
upgrades to be worth the $130 cost, but you wouldn't hurt anything by
waiting for a review (or the first patches).

"This site was born out of my displeasure at having to wade through
dozens of websites, blogs, & RSS feeds related to librarianship,
technology, webmastery, and current issues to find those few posts
that applied to me as a Tech Librarian. I hope this site can serve as
a one-stop-shop for all us Techie Librarians...web design, technology
news, library world news, reference stuff, funky gadgets, and other
useful (or simply amusing) sites and posts. It also has an RSS feed (a
must for lazy people like me)."
And as befitting such a site, there is, of course, an

Once the stuff of
academic
and
corporate
experimentation, ubiquitous computation (or "
ubicomp") is gearing
up for its commercial debut in the very near future. Along the lines
of ostensibly "
nanotechnologic

pants, the reality of ubicomp as made manifest
in consumer products may fall somewhat short of the prognostications:
buying a

al communicator designed to work seamlessly within a ubicomp
context is not the same thing as living in and with a truly
pervasive network.
But already there are signs that the
ubiquitous visions beloved by the corporate players and
enshrined in their
hype are coming into being.
So which do you think it'll be?
Guardian
