Blogging Addiction

Blogging Addiction 05/27/2004 10:46 AM

For Some, the Blogging Never Stops: Please don't let me become like this. Interesting story about blogging addiction.

To celebrate four years of marriage, Richard Wiggins and his wife, Judy Matthews, recently spent a week in Key West, Fla. Early on the morning of their anniversary, Ms. Matthews heard her husband get up and go into the bathroom. He stayed there for a long time.

"I didn't hear any water running, so I wondered what was going on," Ms. Matthews said. When she knocked on the door, she found him seated with his laptop balanced on his knees, typing into his Web log, a collection of observations about the technical world, over a wireless link.

Blogging is a pastime for many, even a livelihood for a few. For some, it becomes an obsession. Such bloggers often feel compelled to write several times daily and feel anxious if they don't keep up.

Internet Addiction Gets Your Out Of The
Military?

Internet Addiction Gets Your Out Of The
Military?
08/03/2004 12:32 PM
Many stories about "internet addiction" have been based on some random psychologist who was mostly trying to drum up some new (and potentially lucrative) business. However, people continue to take it seriously. The latest, amazingly enough, is that the Finnish military is letting people get out of military service if they're addicted to the internet. Apparently "young men miss their computers too much to cope with their compulsory six months in the forces." However, the Commander-Captain of conscription doesn't seem to have much of a problem with young men staying home and playing games instead of serving their country: "For people who play (Internet) games all night and don't have any friends, don't have any hobbies, to come into the army is a very big shock." Of course, they're not completely out of it: "They get sent home for three years and after that they have to come back and we ask if they are OK ... they will have had time to grow up." I wonder if the cases of "internet addiction" will increase, now that kids know they can skip out on service and play games instead.

AP - It's a Friday evening, traditional kickoff time for the party scene in New York's gay community, but the 75 men packed into a small room at a gay health center aren't in a partying mood. Through a humbling 12-step program modeled after Alcoholics Anonymous, they are battling to kick their addiction to methamphetamine, and in doing so escape an epidemic that is roiling urban gay communities nationwide with disease, despair, embarrassment and anger.
