From TypePad to MT 07/20/2004 04:30 PM
I'm sitting here at Da Berkman with Rebecca MacKinnon who is trying to move her site from TypePad to Movable Type. The export of data from one to the other went fine, but TypePad has "type lists" - blogrolls or anything else you want to list, including RSS feeds - that don't export easily to MT. Anyone know an elegant way of doing it?...

People continue to mistake The Onion's stories as real news -- partly because the stories are so deadpan, partly because people are desperate to validate their twisted beliefs. Whatever the reason, the folks at The Onion just laugh and laugh. By Daniel Terdiman.

The prophets at the Onion 03/15/2003 03:00 AM
Egged on by Christopher at Back to Iraq 2.0, I went to the Onion's January 2001 issue and found: Bush also promised to bring an end to the severe war drought that plagued the nation under Clinton, assuring citizens that the U.S. will engage in at least one Gulf War-level armed conflict in the next four years... On the economic side, Bush vowed to bring back economic stagnation by implementing substantial tax cuts, which would lead to a recession, which would necessitate a tax hike, which would lead to a drop in consumer spending, which would lead to layoffs, which would deepen the recession even further... House Majority Leader Dennis Hastert (R-IL) told reporters. "Under Bush, we can all look forward to military aggression, deregulation of dangerous, greedy industries, and the defunding of vital domestic social-service programs upon which millions depend. Mercifully, we can now say goodbye to the awful nightmare that was Clinton's America.... How did they know?...

A Web Site Is Like An Onion... 02/01/2005 09:07 PM

...it's all about layers.

A List Apart has put out two great new articles on the use of JavaScript in web design.

In 'JavaScript Triggers', Peter-Paul Koch (of Quirksmode fame) makes an interesting point: There are 3 big layers to an HTML page: structure, appearance, and behavior. CSS is great because it separates structure from appearance, but how can we use JavaScript without mixing the behavior with the structure?

We should separate behavior and structure by discarding inline event handlers like onmouseover="switchImages('fearful',6,false)". Instead, as with CSS, we should use triggers to tell the script where to deploy the behavior.

Great stuff. He advocates the use of your own custom attributes on elements to drive script behavior (eg >input type="text" required="true" inputtype="phonenumber" <). This is one of my favorite tricks as well, but the major drawback is that your page will no longer validate, because there's no such attribute as 'required' or 'inputtype' in the HTML spec.

My solution to that problem has always been 'ignore the errors', but J. David Eisenberg wrote a companion article on how to create your own custom DTD that includes the new fields. This seems a bit like overkill, but if you have a standard javascript library that makes use of a fixed set of custom attributes, and you use it over and over, a custom DTD could come in handy when you're making sure your site still validates.

A List Apart is a very low-volume site, but whenever they publish something, it's always well worth the read.

Onion Article

Onion Article 07/28/2004 04:28 PM

So Rob sends me this Onion Article.

Many web users were trapped without service Monday, when a large section of the Internet collapsed under the weight of the millions of baby pictures posted online. "Some personal web pages contain literally hundreds of adorable infant photos," MCI senior vice-president Vinton Cerffe said. "Add to that the number of precious pumpkins on photo-sharing sites like Ophoto.com, and anyone can see it was a recipe for disaster. The Internet simply was not designed to support so much parental pride."

I'm not sure why he sent it to ME, though. Why, Rob? Why?

(There actually must be some truth to this article. The hard disk I keep my baby pictures on crapped out this weekend, and it's less than a year old.)

Something to do with Atom and TypePad

Something to do with Atom and TypePad 02/19/2004 12:14 AM
Typepad and iPhoto united with Atom. Atom is a powerful, open, RSS-like syndication format, but so far, not a lot has been done with it. Now, Deez Steeles has used Atom to ship an iPhoto-to-Typepad tool that directly exports pictures that are retouched, selected and organized in Apple's iPhoto to Movable Type's Typepad blogging service. That's pretty sweet.
I'm digging the new Atom API interface to typepad. I have just completed a prototype of an iPhoto2Typepad interface. That means that its now possible to select photos in iPhoto and directly export into a Typepad Photo Album. This is basically my Holy Grail of digital photo convenience. Now the same program we use to import, and organise our pictures can send them right to Typep

iPhoto to Typepad

iPhoto to Typepad 05/25/2004 01:18 PM

PhotoToTypePad/ a> has been released for public beta. I've been testing it for the past couple weeks and Jonathon has incorporated pretty much every feature request and comment I made. It works perfectly for me, I typically create a new gallery, toss some photos in it, rename the titles on the images, then just export to Typepad as a new gallery.

About the only downside I've found so far is the resolution limits at Typepad, which seem to force images whatever max width and height is in your settings (typically 500-640px). Also, I have no idea how much the final version of PhotoToTypepad will cost, hopefully it'll be $5-10.
