This is probably one of, if not the coolest thing I have seen in a while. Theodore Gray, president of the company that makes Mathematica, is quite a cool dude, and his Periodic Table of the Elements Table is definitely the cat's ass of tables (if you know what i mean). While you are at it, check out his Sodium Party. I found this site from reading Ben Hammersley.com. Neat stuff.

Whose castle?

Whose castle? 07/15/2004 03:11 PM
Steve Jobs wants to tear down his home. But there's a problem. It's a George Washington Smith-designed 1926 Spanish Colonial Revival house (mansion?) in Woodside, California, and preservationists feel it has historical significance. Jobs replies that he'll build something that will eventually become "more historically interesting" than the present property. (Given his penchant for the steel and glass of I.M. Pei, that seems questionable.) But should he not have the right to do what he wants with his property? Tear it down, paint it purple, or fill it to the roof with Jell-O; whose business is it other than the homeowner? note: first link leads to NYT, registration required

Castle Way, Southampton 10/29/2003 12:10 AM
I have just been out with my laptop not 5 mins ago, as i live next to the tower block in castle way, southampton, which is opposite the housing benefit office. There are a couple of office blocks at the end of my road, one of them being fanshaw lofts, the accountants, whilst standing at the end of my road opposite these offices, i was able to pick up 3 AP's one of them being a LAN which was perfectly happy to allow me to browse the office network of Askey Computer Corp. and also surf the web at 1Meg which is much better than my 512k DSL in the flat. SSID's For the AP's are: IEEE 802.11 LAN - which is the afore mentioned ASKEY COMP. CORP the second being Epeople, this one i didnt browse as i was having loads of fun with askey and also SSID: SOUTHAMPTON which is WEP encrypted, would not be half suprised if the encrypted is not the housing benefit offices!! Hope this proves to be useful to someone other than me. i shall certainly use askey's LAN again for as long as it allows me especially when i got a large D/L to complete

Crown Castle Selects Windows Media

Crown Castle Selects Windows Media
Deliver TV Via Mobile
04/18/2005 04:38 PM
Crown Castle Mobile Media, a subsidiary of Crown Castle International Corp., and Microsoft Corp. today announced that Crown Castle Mobile Media has selected Windows Media Audio, Windows Media Video 9 and Windows Media Digital Rights Management (DRM) 10 for its Digital Video Broadcasting-Handheld (DVB-H) broadcast service deployment. As a preview of the exciting possibilities this relationship will deliver, Crown Castle Mobile Media will be demonstrating with Microsoft live mobile TV on Windows Mobile (TM) -based devices at the National Association of Broadcasters convention in Las Vegas from April 16 to April 21, 2005.

Windows Media helps enable the secure delivery of high-quality digital entertainment services over IP and other digital networks. The components of the Windows Media 9 Series platform are available from Microsoft in source code format, may be ported to mobile devices based on any operating system, and are licensed under published terms that provide significant commercial advantages for device manufacturers compared with alternative solutions. Windows Media Video 9 is Microsoft's implementation of VC-1, the proposed Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) standard.

"Windows Media is a superb solution for delivering audio and video services over mobile broadcast networks like DVB-H because of its quality and efficiency," said Michael Schueppert, president of Crown Castle Mobile Media. "We are excited to work with Microsoft on this endeavor."

TABLE vs CSS

TABLE vs CSS 05/27/2004 10:46 AM

Tables Vs. CSS - A Fight to the Death: So which is better — building page layouts using TABLE tags or using DIVs and CSS? This guy set out to find out. He built the same site both ways, and documented the experience and results.

On Table-based design... I've seen that design in every browser I can, under Linux, Windows and Macintosh platforms, and it looks practically the same. It's rock solid. Score one for the tables.

On CSS-based Design…Building the design in CSS felt much better. The immediacy of the changes and clarity of the code made me feel more in control of the process. [...] There are significant savings in bandwidth, too. [...] Keeping the layout information apart from the content also provides all sorts of benefits.

In the end, he picked CSS, although I was concerned with some of the browser rendering problems he displays. Like TABLEs or not, they are incredibly stable in the face of different browsers and platforms.

I can go either way. I use CSS for major page layout, but I've been known to slap things in table now and again — every situation is different, and you really need to use the method that gives you the results you want at that particular time.

prod_tisch-nn.jpg imageI kept looking for a greater meaning or purpose to this Table Mirror with an integrated LCD panel in it (reflecting, you might say), but nope, that's pretty much the whole deal. A War for Us, Fought by Them
by William Broyles Jr.
New York Times, 05/04/2004

If children of the political elite were fighting in Iraq, a resolution to the current military imbroglio would soon be found. The author, a Vietnam War veteran, proposes reinstating the draft to ensure the US military gets the support it needs and to relieve pressures on an over-extended volunteer force. Most importantly, he argues, a draft would also prove the ultimate test of Americans' support for the war in Iraq.

William Broyles Jr., the founding editor of Texas Monthly, wrote the screenplay for "Cast Away."

New York Times
A War for Us, Fought by Them

The problem is, I don't see the images of or read about any of the young men and women who, as Dick Cheney and I did, have "other priorities." There are no immediate family members of any of the prime civilian planners of this war serving in it — beginning with President Bush and extending deep into the Defense Department. Only one of the 535 members of Congress, Senator Tim Johnson of South Dakota, has a child in the war — and only half a dozen others have sons and daughters in the military.

[...]

This is less a matter of politics than privilege. The Democratic elites have not responded more nobly than have the Republican; it's just that the Democrats' hypocrisy is less acute. Our president's own family illustrates the loss of the sense of responsibility that once went with privilege. In three generations the Bushes have gone from war hero in World War II, to war evader in Vietnam, to none of the extended family showing up in Iraq and Afghanistan.

I remember when I was living in the US with a Green Card (permanent residence card) and I had to sign up for the draft in high school. I thought it was strange that I couldn't vote, drink or buy a gun, but I could be sent to fight a war for the US. It definitely did make me think a lot about war. I think that reinstating the draft in the US is an interesting idea.

Opinion Source is an interesting site run by some of my friends that summarizes op-eds and editorials from around the world. I need to tell them they need better permalinks.

Jim Flora in the New York Times

Jim Flora in the New York Times 12/30/2004 12:22 AM
Mark Frauenfelder: I've written about my favorite illustrator, the late Jim Flora, several times on Boing Boing. I'm happy to see that the New York Times has an article him, and his influence on today's artists.
Images 2004 12 30 Arts 30Flor.184 "I came across his work in 1993," said Michael Bartalos, a San Francisco-based illustrator who was among the first to locate Flora. "Our styles were very similar - strangely similar, actually - but after I met him I was even more influenced." Among the other prominent artists and illustrators today who are strongly influenced by Flora's art are Tim Biskup, Gary Baseman, J. D. King and Melinda Beck, who all wrote appreciations for Mr. Chusid's book, each praising his effortlessly jazzy spirit. Gene Deitch, a contemporary of Flora's, admits that through the 40's and 50's he was "brazenly imitating his style."
