kleinhenz_picotux_1_.jpgKleinhenz, a German electronics company, is shipping their new network-enabled Linux system in a unit just about the size of a standard RJ-45 Ethernet jack. The "Picotux,"barely big enough to print its MAC address on, is based on the NetSilicon DigiConnect ME, a fully functional Linux-based OS, with up to 8 MB of Flash memory and blinking LEDs to tell you what's going on in there. It requires 3.3V of DC power but also includes a serial port and a processor up to 55MHz. It's available in Wireless flavor as well, with the wired version costing about $130. A similar, Ethernet-sized web server has existed for some time, but this is likely the first running a Linux kernel on it. It's available today, if you speak German. (Their product page doesn't have any ordering information.)

Project Columbia : NASA gets a new Super
Computer

One of the conclusions from the report into the 2003 space shuttle disaster was that NASA lacked enough computing power. As such, NASA have decided to invest in a massive Linux based cluster of computers, to patch over it's IT requirement problems. The computer will be based on SGI Altix computers, each with 1,000Gb of memory, and 20x512 Intel Itanium 2 processors (10,240 in total). It will uses SGI switching technology, and have in total 500 terabytes of storage. The whole system will increase NASA's IT computing base by 10 times.

Unlike previous super computers, 'Project Columbia', as it will be formally known, will be built with 'off the shelf' kit (akin to the GIT Apple Cluster), making it a lot cheaper than the previous generation of super computers, and a lot faster to assemble. Richard Dracott, from Intel's enterprise platforms group said "This is the epitome of change in supercomputing." In total, the project cost will be about $160 million; the computer will be made available to other government agencies to help off set the high price tag.

The computer will be used for mission planning and working on other complex models, such as climate change and physics calculations, like gravity modelling. When built, it will be one of the largest Linux super computers / clusters in the world.

Army Okays Computer Spying

JetBlue ignited a huge privacy scandal when the news broke that the airline secretly provided more than 5 million passenger records to Torch Concepts, a military contractor. Yet the Army Inspector General Agency concluded [PDF] that JetBlue did not violate the Privacy Act. The reason: Torch never looked up individuals by name, but instead used a computer to dig through and analyze their private information.

This is quite disturbing. I guess this means that taking massive amounts of data and crunching through them to create "profiles" is OK. I wonder how small the clusters can be? Can they, for instance, profile companies, race, occupation, address or other kind of groupings for profiling?

There was a case in Japan where the Japanese government kept a list of Freedom of Information Act requesters in a list on a network with their backgrounds and this was found to be "legal".

I don't know enough about the JetBlue case to make a judgment on just how bad I think it is, but it seems to be part of a larger trend pushing the limits of the law.

After reading about how awesome "America's Army" is on a linux system (I have RedHat 9), I decided to download all 670 MB of it. MY QUESTION IS THIS: the file is a .RUN file, so how do I install it? Do I just double-click it or what? I never came across a .RUN file before.
