iTunes User Sues Apple For Only Letting
Music Play On The iPod
01/05/2005 10:30 PMWell, this should be interesting. An "unhappy" iTunes user is now
suing Apple for antitrust
violations, claiming that they broke antitrust laws by only
allowing their music to play on iPods -- blocking out other music
players from the market. It's unlikely that he'll win the lawsuit,
and honestly, it sounds more like a setup by an Apple competitor than
just some individual who feels wronged. The guy in question says he
was "forced" to buy an iPod in order to make use of the music he
bought on iTunes, but the courts will likely point out that he could
have gone to a competing online music store. Of course, what this
really highlights is how some of these copy protection issues are
building fragmented worlds. How would people react if the CDs they
bought at Tower Records could only play on Tower-branded radios?
Thanks to the way the industry views intellectual property online, the
end result is a lot of competing separate worlds, which actively
discourages use.

something here, but last I checked it wasn't anybody's responsibility
to open up their product or service to purposely allow the competition
in. That is, of course, unless the government steps in. Are Real and
Virgin Mega just being whiny little brats, angered that they're not
invited to the party? What are legitimate reasons for the legal system
to get involved and to rule in favor of such plaintiffs? While the
obvious Microsoft may come to mind, are there other examples you can

If you include Apple iTunes Music Store songs in your iMovie/iPhoto

"When you purchase a song from the iTunes Music Store and you use that
song to create a slideshow in iPhoto or use it as an audio track in a
movie you create in iMovie, you would expect that your movies &
slideshows would work when you email them to other people.
"But no! Not only does Apple NOT let your recipients view your iMovie
movies or your iPhoto slideshows, but the worst part about it is that
YOU DO NOT receive a warning when creating these slideshows or movies
in iPhoto or iMovie.
"Imagine burning your slideshow or movie onto a CD and distributing
them to a bunch of people, only to be embarrassed later that none of
your recipients can actually view the movie."

iTunes Shoves Aside Musicmatch
iTunes Shoves Aside Musicmatch
11/04/2003 05:20 AMWhen Apple first launched a Windows version of the iPod, they worked
with MusicMatch to supply the necessary software, since they didn't
have a Windows version of iTunes. Eventually, they decided to launch
their own. This wasn't a huge surprise to the folks at MusicMatch who
realized immediately that their old partner had become a competitor.
What they didn't expect, however, was that the new iTunes for Windows
would
shove
installed copies of MusicMatch aside, and stop it from working
with the iPod. That's right. Even if you had been using MusicMatch
for your iPod prior to downloading iTunes, the iTunes install disables
that functionality. This seems to go a little bit too far.
Installing a new application should not interfere with the way old
applications work - especially when many people will probably want to
continue to use both (or will just be testing out iTunes before
deciding whether or not to stick with MusicMatch).
