In the battle to dominate the emerging business of online music sales, the 800-pound gorilla finally is taking the field. Today, Microsoft rolls out its MSN Music store, directly challenging its nemesis, Apple Computer, which so far has ruled that business. I’ve been testing Microsoft’s new store in advance of today’s launch and comparing it with Apple’s much-praised iTunes music store. While the Microsoft entry has a few nice touches, it is typical of many…

iTunes User Sues Apple For Only Letting
Music Play On The iPod
01/05/2005 10:30 PM
Well, this should be interesting. An "unhappy" iTunes user is now suing Apple for antitrust violations, claiming that they broke antitrust laws by only allowing their music to play on iPods -- blocking out other music players from the market. It's unlikely that he'll win the lawsuit, and honestly, it sounds more like a setup by an Apple competitor than just some individual who feels wronged. The guy in question says he was "forced" to buy an iPod in order to make use of the music he bought on iTunes, but the courts will likely point out that he could have gone to a competing online music store. Of course, what this really highlights is how some of these copy protection issues are building fragmented worlds. How would people react if the CDs they bought at Tower Records could only play on Tower-branded radios? Thanks to the way the industry views intellectual property online, the end result is a lot of competing separate worlds, which actively discourages use.

Market research firm Jupiter Research announced that it expects MP3 player shipments to continue to grow almost 50 percent per year for the next 3 years, with this year's shipments to top out around 3.5 million. The company said that demand for hard drive-based MP3 players like the iPod will outstrip demand for lower capacity flash memory-based models beginning next year. 2006 is the year that Jupiter Research said MP3 players will establish "a critical mass of users that will help spur digital music sales." The comments come as part of a new report entitled "Portable Music Device Forecast, 2002 - 2008."

"HP’s goal is to bring the most compelling entertainment content and experiences to our customers," said Carly Fiorina, chairman and chief executive officer at HP. "We explored a range of alternatives to deliver a great digital music experience and concluded Apple’s iPod music player and iTunes music service were the best by far. By partnering with Apple, we have the opportunity to add value by integrating the world’s best digital music offering into HP’s larger digital entertainment system strategy." The HP digital music player is expected to be available by summer and be competitively priced with other similar devices.

08/06/2004 06:39 PM
Real and France's Virgin claim that they deserve to be able to sell their music on Apple's iPod. To prove they're serious, Virgin Mega has filed a complaint against Apple to do so. Perhaps I'm missing something here, but last I checked it wasn't anybody's responsibility to open up their product or service to purposely allow the competition in. That is, of course, unless the government steps in. Are Real and Virgin Mega just being whiny little brats, angered that they're not invited to the party? What are legitimate reasons for the legal system to get involved and to rule in favor of such plaintiffs? While the obvious Microsoft may come to mind, are there other examples you can think of? As for me, I'd like to hand out copies of "Atlas Shrugged" and "The Fountainhead" to both Real and Virgin Mega...

iTunes music ruins Apple slideshows

iTunes music ruins Apple slideshows 03/19/2005 03:03 AM
Cory Doctorow: If you include Apple iTunes Music Store songs in your iMovie/iPhoto slideshows, you're boned if you try to send the slideshows to friends.
"When you purchase a song from the iTunes Music Store and you use that song to create a slideshow in iPhoto or use it as an audio track in a movie you create in iMovie, you would expect that your movies & slideshows would work when you email them to other people.

"But no! Not only does Apple NOT let your recipients view your iMovie movies or your iPhoto slideshows, but the worst part about it is that YOU DO NOT receive a warning when creating these slideshows or movies in iPhoto or iMovie.

"Imagine burning your slideshow or movie onto a CD and distributing them to a bunch of people, only to be embarrassed later that none of your recipients can actually view the movie."

Users receive the message "This computer is not authorized to play the file nameofmovie.mov."

iTunes Shoves Aside Musicmatch

iTunes Shoves Aside Musicmatch 11/04/2003 05:20 AM
When Apple first launched a Windows version of the iPod, they worked with MusicMatch to supply the necessary software, since they didn't have a Windows version of iTunes. Eventually, they decided to launch their own. This wasn't a huge surprise to the folks at MusicMatch who realized immediately that their old partner had become a competitor. What they didn't expect, however, was that the new iTunes for Windows would shove installed copies of MusicMatch aside, and stop it from working with the iPod. That's right. Even if you had been using MusicMatch for your iPod prior to downloading iTunes, the iTunes install disables that functionality. This seems to go a little bit too far. Installing a new application should not interfere with the way old applications work - especially when many people will probably want to continue to use both (or will just be testing out iTunes before deciding whether or not to stick with MusicMatch).
