BellSouth Can Force DSL Customers To Buy
Local Phone Service
01/27/2004 10:59 PMJust a few months after the Georgia Public Utilities Commission told
BellSouth that they
can't
force DSL customers to buy local phone service, a federal court
has ruled (in a separate case) that BellSouth
isn't violating anti-trust laws by requiring DSL
customers to have local phone service. The article doesn't have
many details, but it sounds like those who filed the lawsuit did a
very bad job explaining their case. The judge simply tossed out the
case saying that "the customers lacked legal standing to pursue the
lawsuit and failed to state any valid legal claims" against BellSouth.
It would be nice if there were more details, because on the face of
it, you would think the case would at least get heard. If BellSouth
is the only way to get DSL (thus, a monopoly) and they're then forcing
customers to buy local phone service (something they don't want), it
certainly sounds like an anti-trust violation.

Microsoft Debuts New Hosted Messaging
And Collaboration Service
02/01/2005 09:56 PMHoping to make its small and medium-size customers at least feel a
little bigger Microsoft has debuted its Solution for Hosted Messaging
and Collaboration 3.0, what company officials are calling their next
generation of hosted services. The new services, which leverage the
company's Solution for Hosted Exchange 2003, has added new support for
hosted versions of Office Live Communications Server 2005 as well as
Windows SharePoint Services. This is designed to be a more cost
effective approach for SMBs through access to more robust e-mail,
shared calendaring, document collaboration and instant messaging.
The added benefit to service providers, company officials claim, is
they can offer their smaller customers with more proactive monitoring
of their businesses along with provisioning automation and more
centralized management. This makes it possible for providers to
consolidate existing e-mail systems onto a single platform reducing
the cost of deployment.
"We hear from a lot of small and medium-sized organizations about
their need for enterprise-class messaging and collaboration services,
but they do not want the worry of keeping their systems safe against
things like SPAM, viruses and other security attacks. At the same time
they want to purchase such services from providers that offer
personalized support and higher levels of availability. That, too, is
very important to them," said Pascal Martin, general manager for
Hosting Solutions at Microsoft.

BellSouth Looks To Get Out Of Unbundled
DSL Rules
06/14/2004 06:00 PMJust as most of their competitors are
going
the other direction and offering unbundled, "naked" DSL, BellSouth
is looking to
stop offering it to try to force
their customers to buy bundled DSL with local phone service.
While earlier court rulings had
force
d the company to unbundle in certain states (and not in others),
those rulings may not apply as UNE-P rules are set to expire tomorrow.
What's amazing is that BellSouth seems to think this is a good thing.
They're basically telling potential customers they won't sell them
any service at all, unless they agree to buy a service they don't
need. If ever there were a marketing recipe designed to drive
potential customers straight into competitors' open arms, this is it.
As I said on Friday, they're giving up their future (broadband) to try
to weakly hold onto their past (local phone service).

BellSouth to Offer Hotspots to Internet
Customers
03/06/2004 01:49 AMBellSouth says it is building 100 hotspots in Charlotte, N.C.:
Existing DSL and dial up customers will be able to use the hotspots,
which will become available in the second quarter, for free. It's not
clear if folks who are not BellSouth Internet customers will be able
to use the network. BellSouth doesn't seem to have a press release
about this on its Web site; maybe the story was announced locally in
Charlotte. BellSouth is one of the few major landline operators that
has yet to announce a Wi-Fi strategy. The company owns a variety of
wireless licenses in and around the MMDS bands. This is pure
speculation, but BellSouth would be smart to build hotspots once WiMax
gear is available and comes down in price because it can use its
licensed frequencies and WiMax to backhaul hotspots at a low cost....
