AVN Online: Guest Editorial: Annalee Newitz Weighs in on the Perfect 10 Ruling. "The ruling explains that, to qualify for safe harbors, a company must terminate its relationship with a user or customer if they receive 'repeat notifications' of copyright infringement. 'Repeat notifications' means multiple takedown notices." They say porn is the first to adopt new technologies, so why not anti-technologies? I find two separate disturbing precedents here: first, the idea that the DMCA applies to any company that has some relationship with copyright infringers (e.g. billing services) and second, the termination thing.

NYT pro-P2P editorial

NYT pro-P2P editorial 08/30/2004 12:03 PM
Xeni Jardin: A New York Times editorial today praising the recent appeals court decision on P2P services Grokster and Morpheus:
[T]he broader issue is the distribution of information. Software like Grokster creates a network of independent Internet users who can access one another's computer files without going through a central server. (Napster maintained a central server, which made it legally liable in very different ways.) Grokster can certainly be used to swap music illegally. But it can also be used to exchange electronic copies of books already in the public domain, transcripts of Congressional hearings or any number of other legitimate types of information. Much like a VCR that does not distinguish between a pirated tape and one legally acquired, the technology does not care what is shared. It is impossible to strike down software like Grokster for its use in illegal file-sharing without also destroying its capacity for legal and socially beneficial activities.

Editorial

Editorial 12/24/2003 08:51 AM

Wired: "If we're still in the race in a few months, I think you'll see a tremendous amount of development."

Wouldn't it be great if Dean and Clark went after Viacom, ClearChannel and Time-Warner, instead of the tiny companies that make blogging and social networking tools.

I find myself hoping they get their asses kicked, hard. I don't expect much of Bush, but I doubt seriously that he would undermine the mostly American software industry by competing with it with free software. Makes the Dems' pitch about exporting American high-tech jobs to India fairly hollow (NH is a high-tech state, so it has been an issue).

One of the reasons American programmers aren't competing here (in America) is that users expect to get software for free, and in that environment little new stuff gets created, and we have to keep creating to justify the greater amount of money we make (over Indians). But if all we make are commodities, then Indians working for low pay beat Americans working for free. (People who work for free have no incentive to please users, or even create usable software.)

How sad to see two leading Democrats fall for, even feed the lie that they can create user-oriented software for free. Shame on both Dean and Clark. They went after the little guy. Who wants a president who does that. Not me. Still looking for someone worth supporting.

How DO You Serve Two Masters?: Dean Peters over at Heal Your Church Web Site is on vacation. so he asked a bunch of us to guest-write for this week. My day was today. I hope I didn't suck.

[...] church Web sites have an interesting challenge in front of them: they have to search two audiences equally well.

First, we have the Visitors. [...] These folks are perhaps looking for a church home, and have come to your site as part of their search.

On the other side, we have the Members. These are people who already belong to the church and are active in various activities and groups.

It's actually very interesting working with someone else's MT installation. For instance, since I couldn't see the templates, I didn't know what field Dean was using for the front page — Entry Body or Extended Entry. So I guessed...and got it wrong. Additionally, I didn't know that he links Bible references automatically (awesomely done, incidentally — gotta be a heck of a regex...), so I had to pull an HREF that I originally had in there.

It's tougher that you think to come up-to-speed on someone else's site, given all the different configuration options, template tags, and plugin quirks Movable Type makes possible.

New Names & Guest Bloggers

New Names & Guest Bloggers 05/04/2004 04:38 PM

You may have noticed some new names on our blog of late. Roland Honekamp, an Internet entrepreneur in Germany, recently joined Creative Commons as Christiane Asschenfeldt's right-hand-man at iCommons HQ in Berlin. Heather Ford, a Reuters Digital Vision Fellow here at Stanford, is helping lead iCommons Africa's development, with a focus on South Africa, her home. Victor Stone, who submitted tracks to our Remix contest last year, has joined as an occasional guest blogger on matters of music and bricolage. And last but certainly not least, Creative Commons poster boy Cory Doctorow -- blogger, EFF activist, and award-winning science fiction author -- is now Creative Commons' advisor on iCommons UK. (Cory liked us so much -- and we, him -- that he joined the company.)

Stay tuned for more guest-blogging. In the meantime, welcome our new friends.

Guest Editors during my recovery 06/14/2004 02:45 PM

I am looking for a couple of guest editors to help out for the next several weeks as my recovery from spinal surgery proceeds. If you would like to help out drop a line at geeK at geeknewscentral.com. I am in transit back to Hawaii so it may be up to 48 hours before I respond. All existing editors we hope you can step up your contributions over the next 14 days..

I am also looking for someone who is up to speed on MT 3 to help me in working on several sections that I do not have ready for the switch over. I am willing to pay for this service.

Microsoft's Virtual PC software has some new competition from Dublin, Ireland-based Lismore Software Systems Inc. Lismore on Tuesday announced the release of Guest PC 1.0, a new PC emulation software for Mac OS X. The application emulates the inner workings of a PC-compatible computer, enabling Mac users to run software that's not compatible with their native operating system. Lismore is a veteran of the PC emulation market on the Macintosh; the company previously released Blue Label PowerEmulator, a PC emulator for Mac OS 9 and earlier operating systems that's been around since the late 1990s.
