Intel strikes back with Nocona
08/02/2004 03:54 PMInfatuated with Itanium, Intel has long resisted the obvious: creating
a 64-bit chip that simply extends the x86 architecture on which the
company built its fortune. Instead, Intel has ceded that ground to
AMD, whose 64-bit, x86-compatible Opteron has steadily eaten into the
market shares of both Itanium and the 32-bit Xeon throughout the past
year. For many, Itanium has been too expensive and too much of a
departure. And Xeon has lacked the 64-bit headroom provided by
Opteron.
The game changed in late June when Intel introduced its newest Xeon
processor, code-named Nocona. Intel unveiled the most recent arrival
in its storied Xeon processor line with little fanfare, but in fact,
it’s a major departure given that Intel has actually adapted the
x86-64 instruction set that AMD developed for the Opteron. Intel’s new
architecture, the EM64T (Extended Memory 64 Technology), brings a Xeon
chip into direct competition with the Opteron for the first time.

The intern accused of having an affair with Kerry
does some investigative reporting of her own.
And so my education had taken me pretty much as far as it could. I
started out as an ambitious young woman inspired by politics and the
media. I’ve ended up disenchanted with both. If I had been an
ambitious young man, this story would not have happened. I’m never
going to know exactly what happened, but that matters less to me now.
I lost a good friend and learned a few lessons. I am struck by the
pitiful state of political reporting, which is dominated by the unholy
alliance of opposition research and its latest tool, the Internet.
Even the Wall Street Journal’s Website ran Drudge’s story, with
only a brief disclaimer that his stories weren’t always
accurate.
It was important for me to set the record straight. I don’t mean to
dredge up old news by writing this, and I’m not trying to create any
now, though I’m not unaware of the irony that I am adding to the ink
spilled on this story. I don’t intend to discuss it again in public
either. But for me, this painful experience will be hard to forget. It
may be only a minor footnote to the campaign, but it has changed my
life completely. The Former Empire Strikes Back

Responding to Spammers -- The Internet
Strikes Back
11/05/2003 10:55 AMOne of the things that I live my life according to is the question:
"What would happen if everybody did this?". This is one of the
reasons why I would never spam.. If everybody did that, we would end
up with, well, the situation we've got with spam. Today, I got so
fed up with the spam I've been receiving (I'm up to about 300 spams a
day now), that I picked two random spams, went to their web sites and
typed in random data into their forms. One of those sites was even
kind enough to respond with a toll free number that I could use if I
was overly eager to talk to them ( 1-866-561-9216 -- inaccessible from
Canada). Then I asked myself my recurring question "What if
everybody did this?". I liked the answer. We've been going about
it all wrong. We need to start responding to spam.
Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back
Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back
04/03/2005 09:53 PMI know it's kind of pointless to review some of the most re/viewed
movies in history, but I'm working my way through the original Star Wars trilogy on DVD and I haven't seen
them in awhile, so I'm putting down some thoughts anyway.
Something that struck me while watching Empire is that every time I
see a Star Wars film, I catch something I missed the previous 50
times. I generally chalk this up to my not paying close enough
attention or forgetting that I actually caught it the last time
around**. But I also think, begrudgingly, that Lucas is a little
smarter than I give him credit for and the first three movies are more
complex than they seem.
The novel thing this time around for me occurred during Luke and
Vader's first meeting in Cloud City. I never noticed that Vader isn't
trying to turn Luke to the Dark Side to join him and the Emperor. He
wants Luke to help him overthrow the Emperor and they'll rule as
father and son. And then that sets up all sorts of weird shifting
alliances and intrigue between the three of them...the Emperor is
trying to play Vader and Luke off of each other, Vader is trying to
keep his true goal a secret from the Emperor and might have to kill
Luke to do so, and Luke's trying to fend off both of them and keep his
own secrets (Yoda, his sister). I mean, it's not The Godfather, but
it's not bad.
** This happens to me all the time, especially with shows like Law
& Order. I can't remember a single episode from start to finish,
which means I can watch them over and over again and always be
surprised about what happens at the end.

Friends finale and NBC Tivo-b0rking --
TiVo Strikes Back
05/07/2004 10:49 AMFollowing up on yesterday's post about NBC's apparent attempts to b0rk
potential TiVoers of the Friends finale, BoingBoing reader Douglas
Clark says,
I am a loyal Tivo user and Tivo did send out a
message alert to users about the Friends episode. It was more along
the lines of "if you manually extend the time of a recording, you may
miss the beginning of the friends final episode." I find that Tivo is
pretty good about catching unusual start times and other wonky tricks
the networks play. The previous comment about HUT and ratings was
right on the money...
Link to previous BoingBoing post.
Tech maven Meg Hourihan
adds, "Even weirder is that I got a message on my Tivo warning me that
the finale of Friends would have abnormal times. The message warned
that if I wasn't just using the automatic "start on time" and "end on
time" settings (i.e. I manually set the start time as 8 PM) that I
might miss some. What makes things weirder and worse is that Tivo
still didn't record the whole show! I made sure my settings were what
the message instructed, and happened to watch the show live. Tivo
kicked in to record at 8:59 PM (which is what it listed the start time
as) but stopped at 9:59! According to the time on my digital cable
box, the program didn't end until 10:03 PM. So if I hadn't watched it
live, I would have missed the last four minutes. Seems like a major
screw-up on Tivo's part, especially after sending out that
message!"
