A First Look at Writing and Deploying
Apps in the Next Generation of Windows
11/16/2003 11:47 PM
The next version of the Microsoft Windows operating system, code-named "Longhorn," marks a significant change not only in terms of how the operating system works, but also in the way in which applications are built. The Longhorn version of Windows includes a new storage system, natural search technology, and an increased emphasis on security and trustworthy computing. Here the author provides an overview of Longhorn, focusing on the build-once, deploy n-times application model. In addition, he discusses the new language, code-named "XAML," that's used to create UI elements, then presents some working samples.

Rapid application development environments let you produce code templates by visually designing a graphical user interface. You then simply add code for what should happen when an event (e.g. a click) occurs. Borland's Kylix is a well-known RAD application, but rumour has it Kylix's days are numbered. Microsoft Patents Writing Windows Apps
Using HTML
12/09/2003 05:03 PM
theodp writes "If you think coding around that Eolas patent might be tough, you ain't seen nothin' yet. The USPTO awarded a patent to Microsoft Tuesday for Writing Windows Applications Using HTML, which covers the authoring and execution of HTML that runs in its own window outside of the browser. Ironically, Microsoft occupies two seats on the W3C HTML Patent Advisory Group that's fighting the Eolas patent." Certainly seems like something that is pretty damn obvious, and not quite patentable. There must be prior art examples of people writing HTML applications outside the browser window? If this patent stands, though, it certainly sounds like Google's new desktop toolbar is in violation.

Solution Guide for Sybase/UNIX to SQL
Server 2000: Database Engine Migration
and Application Interoperation
05/18/2004 01:31 PM
This guide presents information on the most common issues encountered and possible solutions for migrating Sybase databases to SQL Server. The guide focuses on procedures for transferring the items in a Sybase database and on redirecting and redeploying DB-Library and CT-Library applications to use a migrated database. Depending on the specific technologies used to host these client applications, at least three options are available for reconfiguring them: 1) Client applications can remain in their existing environment and be redirected to SQL Server. 2) Client applications previously executing under UNIX can be redeployed to the computer running Microsoft Windows®, hosted in the Microsoft Windows Services for UNIX (SFU) environment, and then redirected to SQL Server. 3) Client applications can be fully ported to the Microsoft Windows platform and rewritten to take advantage of Microsoft technologies and APIs.

Critical Update for Windows Media Player
(All Versions) for Windows 2000, Windows

When a content owner creates an audio or video stream, they can add script commands (such as URL script commands and custom script commands) to be encoded in the stream. When the stream is played back, the script commands can trigger events in an embedded player program, or they can open your browser and then navigate to a Web page. This behavior is by design

After applying the Update for Windows Media Player Script Commands (KB828026), some URL script commands do not fire even though they would be expected to do so. In addition to the URL script command issues, this package addresses an issue with the installer that would cause 100% CPU utilization in certain scenarios.

(KB825116)

DirectX 9.0b was released on 7/23/03 to address the MIDI security issue identified in bulletin MS03-030. A small number of non-security fixes were also included in the release. One of these fixes caused several TV Tuner capture card/driver combinations using video formats other than NTSC (NTSC-J, PAL, SECAM) to no longer initialize correctly on Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003. Symptoms include loss of capture functionality and potential inability to set/retain device capture settings. This hotfix, documented further in Knowledge Base article 825116, has been issued to correct the flaw. 11-04-03 update: The English hotfix package has been modified to allow patching of all language installations supported by the affected Operating Systems.
